The New Jersey Devils could be without some of their veteran players for a must-win game against Carolina today.

Heading into Friday’s game, the Devils played without two injured forwards, left wing Ryane Clowe and center Steven Gionta. By the end of the night, three more forwards were hurting – leading goal scorer Adam Henrique, third-leading scorer Patrik Elias and center Jacob Josefson. If all five are unavailable for Saturday night's game in Carolina, the Devils will have to turn to the AHL’s Albany Devils to suit up a complete team. Right wing Steve Bernier, a healthy scratch Friday, would replace one of the injured players, and depending on whether the Devils’ opt to play seven defensemen for the second game in a row, they’d either have to call up two or three players from the minors. Among the possible callups are Reid Boucher and Stefan Matteau.

Steve Bernier might have suffered a shoulder injury when he crashed into the boards during Monday's practice.

Devils coach Pete DeBoer wasn't comfortable declaring Bernier fit to play on Tuesday following the incident, but he also thinks "he'll be OK." Bernier has three goals and eight points in 40 games this season.

Steve Bernier potted the lone goal in the Devils' 1-0 overtime triumph over the Sabres on Saturday night.

If you like offense, this game definitely wasn't for you as the two teams combined for 39 shots on goal. Bernier scored with 31 seconds left in overtime. Suffice to say, with just two goals and five points, Bernier is not a fantasy factor. Andy Greene and Adam Henrique had the assists.

The New Jersey Devils have lost three straight games in overtime.

"It’s better than no points, but in all those games we were ahead in the third period," Steve Bernier said. "So one thing we need to do is learn to how play with a lead and, obviously, try to play when there is less than a minute to play in a game." Just to clarify, in Monday's 3-2 shootout loss to Ottawa, the Devils never held the lead. However, they did concede last minute goals to Tampa Bay and Florida on Friday and Saturday respectively, which led to them losing both of those contests. The Devils currently hold the seventh seed and have a four-point edge over the ninth place New York Islanders.

Steve Bernier potted two goals in New Jersey's 3-2 overtime loss to Florida on Saturday night.

The goal was his first since March 2, and he isn't much of a fantasy factor, with eight goals and 12 points on the season. Henrik Tallinder, Stephen Gionta, Ryan Carter and Andrei Loktionov had the assists.

Steve Bernier scored two goals as the New Jersey Devils took advantage of a late surge to beat the New York Islanders 3-0 on Sunday.

Bernier had the game-winner and an insurance tally in the third period. Those represent his second and third of the season, with goals representing all of his offense so far in 2013. He's a marginal consideration at this point, but his first-round talent indicates it might not be too late for him to develop into a regular contributor some day.

Steve Bernier would be open to playing in Europe if he gets the opportunity.

"For sure, that would be a decision I would have to talk over with my wife and see if it's worth it," he said. "But, at the same time, I'm a hockey player. I want to play. I want to be in good shape. I've got a two-year contract now (with the Devils) and I don't want to miss my chance to show that last year was not a one-year thing." Bernier will participate in the La Tournée des Joueurs or The Players' Tour, along with several other NHL players this week to play something more meaningful than unofficial skates and to help raise money for charity.

Steve Bernier's agent, Philippe Lecavalier, is confident that a deal will get done with the New Jersey Devils.

"We should be getting things done," Lecavalier said. "It looks really good right now. He was real excited about going back and we're right there, so, hopefully, there's going to be an announcement in the next day or two." Bernier is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent on July 1 if the negotiations don't work out.

Steve Bernier felt overwhelmed by the support he received from his teammates after his five-minute major for boarding resulted in three Los Angeles' power-play goals in Game 6 on Monday night.

"Everybody in this room has been very nice," said Bernier. "They're hockey players. They know it could happen to anybody. I didn't try to do a non-hockey hit. I played the same way for the season, hitting every chance I got, and this time it was a little bad luck." To his credit, he was ready to field questions after the Devils' 6-1 loss resulted in the Kings winning the Stanley Cup. Bernier is eligible to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, but he is hoping to return to New Jersey.
