The New Jersey Devils are unlikely to bring back Steve Bernier next season.
Bernier, 30, managed 16 goals and 32 points in 67 games in 2014-15. That tied the best mark of his career, which began in 2005-06. He might get some interest as a fringe forward if he's willing to take a modest deal. Jun 27 - 7:33 PM

Steve Bernier's future with the Devils is uncertain.

The pending unrestricted free agent hasn't spoken to new GM Ray Shero since he took over on May 4 or to head coach John Hynes since he was hired earlier this month. "So far, it's been quiet, but we understand that there's a lot of work that needs to be done before they start talking to players," said Bernier. "So, it's pretty calm right now, actually." He hopes to be back with New Jersey next season. He produced a personal best 16 goals in 2014-15 and ended up with 32 points in 67 games.
Jun 18 - 11:53 AM

Steve Bernier had 15 penalty minutes on Saturday.

The forward took a five minute major for kneeing and received a game misconduct as well for his misdeed. Bernier finished the season with only 28 penalty minutes and 32 points. He took only four minors all season but had the kneeing major, the misconduct and one fighting major (David Savard) in 2014-15.
Apr 12 - 8:02 AM

Steve Bernier scored twice in the Devils' overtime loss to Tampa Bay on Thursday night.

Bernier now has 16 goals and as many assists for 32 points in 66 games so far this season. He is a point away from setting a career-high in points this season.
Apr 10 - 1:01 AM

Steve Bernier was credited a goal and tallied an assist on the power play during Tuesday's 4-2 loss to the Rangers.

As Bernier glided around the net on his forehand, he found daylight between Cam Talbot and the post and tried to feed Travis Zajac. Instead Derick Brassard and Talbot fumbled the puck and accidentally put it into their own net, making it 3-2 Rangers at the time. He now has 14 goals and 30 points this season, with three coming on the man advantage.
Apr 7 - 10:28 PM

Steve Bernier scored a pair of goals in New Jersey's 3-1 win over Buffalo on Friday night.

Both of Bernier's goals were scored in the second period and they came just over four minutes apart. The 29-year-old now has seven points in his last six games, but he still hadn't scored a goal since February 14th. Bernier now has 12 goals and 26 points in 56 games this season. Adam Henrique and Scott Gomez picked up assists on both of Bernier's goals. Jordin Tootoo also scored for the Devils. New Jersey has now won three consecutive games and they have allowed just two goals during that span.
Mar 20 - 9:33 PM

Steve Bernier recorded three assists in a 5-2 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday.

It was Bernier's sixth career three-point game and his first time registering three assists in a single contest. He has 10 goals and 22 points in 51 games this season.
Mar 9 - 10:15 AM

Steve Bernier scored the only goal for New Jersey, which lost to the Predators on Saturday night 3-1.

Another game, more tough times for the Devils in generating offense. Bernier scored on the power play in the second period, so he now has 11 goals and 19 points this season. On the plus side, he has lit the lamp in two games in a row. Scott Gomez and Eric Gelinas assisted on the goal.
Feb 14 - 10:51 PM

Steve Bernier has five goals and six points in the Devils' last six games.

Bernier has eight goals and 16 points in 35 contests in 2014-15 after being limited to just 12 points in 78 games last season. "For whatever reason I think he was trying too hard," Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello noted. "We pushed him up in the lineup a little bit and I think he was pressing. Now, he's very comfortable no matter where he goes. He's not trying to do too much." Bernier has been a solid bottom-six forward for New Jersey in 2014-15, but we can't recommend him in standard leagues at this time.
Feb 2 - 9:21 AM

Steve Bernier scored New Jersey's only goal in their 2-1 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Friday night.

This game was scoreless through the first two periods, but Bernier opened the scoring 6:08 into the third frame. The 29-year-old now has seven goals on the season, but he has scored four goals in his last five games. The Devils are now 2-0-1 in their last three games, but they have scored more than two goals in a game just twice in their last seven contests.
Jan 30 - 9:53 PM

Steve Bernier will remain in the lineup Wednesday against the Leafs.

Bernier will appear in his fourth straight game Wednesday night against the Leafs. Even with Tuomo Ruutu and Jaromir Jagr healthy and back in the lineup, Bernier will keep his spot on the Devils third line. He has 13 points (six goals and seven assists) in 32 games in the 2014-2015 season. Michael Ryder will instead be a healthy scratch Wednesday.
Jan 28 - 5:15 PM

Steve Bernier scored a goal in a 5-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Monday.

Bernier got his start with the Sharks after they took him with the 16th overall pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. He's been playing alongside Adam Henrique and Scott Gomez lately because Jaromir Jagr has been out with an illness. Bernier has taken advantage of the opportunity by scoring three goals in three games.
Jan 20 - 9:22 AM

Steve Bernier picked up two power play goals and recorded a team high six shots in the Devils' 5-3 win over the Kings on Wednesday.

A healthy scratch on numerous occasions this season, Bernier had his first multiple goal game of the year. He doesn't have fantasy value in season long leagues but he does as a cheap option in DFS if he is playing on the power play. Bernier has 12 points in 30 games. He was one of nine Devils to record a point as Scott Gomez, Michael Cammalleri and Michael Ryder each picked up two points in the offensive explosion.
Jan 15 - 1:54 AM

Steve Bernier will be a healthy scratch against the Islanders on Friday night.

Though he has 10 points and 47 hits through 29 games this season, he has little to no fantasy value.

Jan 9 - 6:27 PM

Steve Bernier will be a healthy scratch Thursday.

He will be replaced in the lineup by Martin Havlat. "Havlat has been sick and he played well before he came, so the thought process was get him back in," Devils GM and interim coach Lou Lamoriello said. Bernie played well every game, but you can't play everybody. Right now, we're healthy up front."
