Kevin Klein has signed ZSC Lions of the Swiss league.
Klein had recently announced his retirement, ending his five-year, $14.5 million contract with the Rangers a season before its conclusion, but apparently he's not ending his playing career. Kevin Klein has decided to end his playing career.

Klein is closing the books on his NHL career at the age of 32. He played in 60 games last season, but he dealt with lower back issues and was scratched for most of the playoffs. The blueliner scored 38 goals and 154 points in 627 career games between his time with the Nashville Predators and New York Rangers. He also appeared in 73 career playoff contests. He had one season left on his four-year, $14.5 million contract.

Kevin Klein is reportedly considering retirement from the NHL.

According to sources, Klein would look to continue his playing career in Europe. Klein has one year remaining on his contract at $2.75 million and it carries a $2.9 million cap hit. He was limited to 60 games in 2016-17, while dealing with lower back issues and he was a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs.

Kevin Klein suited up in just one game during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

He played in Game 3 against Montreal during the first round, but sat as a healthy scratch for most of the postseason. Klein is signed for one more season at $2.9 million and could be a trade option for the Rangers during the off-season. He had 14 points and 54 shots in 60 games during the regular season.

He was on the ice for the pre-game skate, but he didn't take part in pairing rushes. The Rangers will go with Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi, Marc Staal and Nick Holden, and Brady Skjei and Brendan Smith. Klein has only suited up in one game this postseason. Klein picked up three goals and 14 points along with 125 blocks and 135 hits over 60 games this season. Kampfer meanwhile posted two points with 23 hits in just 10 games. Clendening for his part accumulated 11 points in 32 games this season.

Klein had three goals and 14 points in 60 games in the regular season. He was sidelined for nearly a month with a back issue and while he returned March 26, he didn't always look that great after coming back. "Kleiner, after having been out so long and not having been able to train for so long, he got the opportunity to play those games near the end. Played all right," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "He’s a good defenseman. He’s ready, and if we need him moving forward, he’s going to be ready."

Kevin Klein was able to return to action on Friday against the Penguins.

He'd played just once since Feb. 21st due to back spasms. Hopefully his inclusion of the lineup means that his back woes are behind him.

The Rangers will play four matches away from home next week. Klein didn't skate Saturday morning and his MRI came back negative. He has been sidelined since Feb. 21 because of back spasms.
