The Islanders are hoping that the opening shift of the second period by their physical bottom-six line against the Rangers changes the course of their season.

Casey Cizikas, Matt Martin and Colin McDonald opened the second period against the Rangers' top line, cycling down low, laying a few hits and ultimately scoring (McDonald) to cut the deficit to 2-1. "It really turned the game around for us," Frans Nielsen said. "Those guys went out and showed how we needed to play against them. If we get the puck in deep and we're aggressive on their D, they'll turn it over. Hopefully that's the shift that will turn our whole season around."

He posted a shot during his eight minutes of ice time against Pittsburgh in his return to the lineup. McDonald was suspended for two games for a boarding play on Penguins defenseman Ben Lovejoy on Jan. 29.

McDonald has two assists and 19 penalty minutes in six games this season. He will be eligible to return to the lineup on Feb. 5 when the Islanders meet the Penguins again.

The incident occurred late in the second period when he hit Pittsburgh defenseman Ben Lovejoy. McDonald was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct on the play.

McDonald has two goals and six assists in five December contests. He signed a two-way deal with the Islanders over the summer after recording 49 points and 41 penalty minutes in 68 games with the AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins last season.

McDonald will earn $525,000 next season if he ends up playing with the Penguins, but we suspect that he'll spend most of the 2011-12 season in the minors. He scored a startling 42 goals and 58 points in 80 AHL games last season, but he will turn 27 in September and he's only played in two NHL contests.
