B.J. Crombeen has agreed to a two-year, $2.3 million extension with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Crombeen was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has seven points and 86 penalty minutes in 30 games this season, but is currently day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

B.J. Crombeen (lower body) will not be in the lineup Tuesday night against the Buffalo Sabres.

Crombeen missed Sunday's game after taking a low hip check along the boards from Ottawa's Marc Methot on Saturday. Crombeen's 86 penalty minutes are fourth in the league but that's pretty much the extent of his fantasy value.

B.J. Crombeen missed Sunday's game with a lower-body injury.

Crombeen took exception to a low hip check along the boards from Ottawa's Marc Methot during Saturday's contest and went after the Senators blueliner. He also fought Matt Kassian earlier in the match to give him 22 penalty minutes on the night. Crombeen sits fourth in the league with 86 minutes in the sin bin and he leads the league with 12 fighting majors.

Tampa coach Guy Boucher said B.J. Crombeen is medically cleared to play Thursday.

However, it wouldn't be surprising if he got the game off after he was knocked woozy in a fight with Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo on Tuesday. Crombeen left that game as a precaution and Boucher admitted that he isn't sure if the Lightning winger will dress Thursday.
Feb 7 - 10:02 AM

B.J. Crombeen didn't play after getting dropped in a fight with Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo on Tuesday.

His night finished after two shifts and 1:41 of ice time. The Lightning were enraged at the play when Rinaldo appeared to continue throwing punches when Crombeen was down on his knees. He looked woozy when he left the ice for repairs, but after the game he seemed to be better. "They always play a hard physical game and we're trying to establish that we do that, too," Crombeen said referring to the contest. "We're a big team, we play hard and we're willing to stand up for ourselves any time. When two teams like that meet, there's going to be some physicality and some bad blood that grows over time." We'll keep him as active for now. Crombeen has two assists and 30 penalty minutes in nine games.
Feb 6 - 12:20 PM

B.J. Crombeen is expected to add some much-needed grit to Tampa Bay's lineup this season.

"I try to bring a physical element to my game and try to be there for my teammates," he said. "But a big part of my game has always been to play a good two-way game, play strong defensive forward, do some checking, some penalty killing, all that kind of stuff and try to make it difficult on the other team's top players." Crombeen posted three points, 71 penalty minutes and 22 hits in 40 games with St. Louis last season, while averaging just over eight minutes of ice time per match.

B.J. Crombeen isn't letting diabetes slow him down.

The Lightning forward has been a Type I diabetic since he was 9, and with training camp expected to be more intense than previous seasons, that means more "self-managing" for him, as the team's head trainer calls it. Tampa Bay acquired him in July from St. Louis. "As long as you're willing to take the time to manage it and check your blood and watch what you're eating, it becomes a way of life," Crombeen said.

B.J. Crombeen said that the NHL's decision to walk away from the union's latest offer is "mind-boggling."

"The deal is right there in front of them," Crombeen said. "It's pretty simple for them if they want to make a deal, but they made it very clear to us that they don't. They're trying to squeeze five more cents out of a deal that can be done, and we can be back playing hockey sooner. It's very frustrating, but I wouldn't say I'm overly surprised because of the way they acted throughout the whole process." The NHL stated that they excepted the union to give them a yes or no response to whether or not the players would agree to a few key demands and when the union offered a counterproposal instead, the NHL promptly rejected it.

B.J. Crombeen has joined the ECHL Orlando Solar Bears.

Crombeen is expected to make his debut on Saturday. Although Crombeen has 288 NHL games under his belt at this point, the ECHL will not be a new experience for him. He spent 22 games with the ECHL Idaho Steelheads between the 2005-06 and 2006-07 campaigns.

B.J. Crombeen thinks that the NHL needs to give up more in order to get a new CBA.

"It's obviously frustrating," Crombeen said. "We all feel there a deal there to be had. It's just a matter of them (the owners) realizing it and making a move. I think everyone in the world knows negotiations are give and take. You can't just take everything." Although the NHL has made concessions compared to their initial offer, Crombeen argues that "everyone can see from everything that has been made public how much we've given up and how little we've gotten." Crombeen is referring to the old CBA, which will almost certainly be a better deal for the players than the one they eventually sign. That being said, given that the players were getting 57% of hockey-related revenues before, you could argue that they had more to give up in the first place. Regardless, the two sides seem to be moving closer together, albeit slowly, so there's still reasons to be optimistic about our chances of having a 2012-13 campaign.

B.J. Crombeen says the league talks like it wants the game back, but the league's unwillingness to negotiate speaks to its real motives of getting the best deal at all costs.

The two sides haven't met since Oct. 18, and the NHL won't meet with the players unless they negotiate off the league's last proposal. "It's something you hope the switch turns and they actually begin to negotiate and begin to talk,"  Crombeen said. "I personally don't think it's a major gap. It's not like that last time when there was a salary cap coming. There's obviously differences, there's some things, but I'm fairly certain if they were wiling to negotiate something could get done fairly quickly. So, it's something where you try to hang on that hope, and hope it finally clocks with them, and they realize everyone wants the game to get back and get back quickly."

B.J. Crombeen called the NHL's new proposal a "positive step," but he added that there's "a lot work" that still needs to be done.

"We feel that there are some good things in what they propose," said Crombeen, who is a member of the Players' Association negotiating committee, "but there are also something that don't work at all and don't make a whole lot of sense. When the players, the fans and media hear that 50-50 number, it's easy to think, 'Let's get 'er done. Let's get going.' But I think there is a lot more than meets the eye with the proposal. There are a lot of variables." His view of the process appears to be in line with a number of players and that is cautiously optimistic.

Lightning forward B.J. Crombeen believes both the players and owners are hopeful a deal can be reached in time to ensure a full season goes on as scheduled.

Crombeen was part of the NHLPA's negotiating committee and feels the process will take time, but believes both sides are negotiating in good faith. "Everyone wishes there was a deal in place now, but it’s something that takes time to understand," Crombeen said. "I think you can always wish it was further along."

The Tampa Bay Lightning are looking for a strong two-way game from B.J. Crombeen.

The Lightning picked up the truculent Crombeen from the St. Louis Blues earlier in the week and while they like his physical play, he can play an offensive role as well as he had 11 goals for St. Louis in the 2008-09 season. The Lightning have been lacking a tough player for the last three seasons as they had only 23 fighting majors in 2011-12 and with Crombeen picking up 148, 169 and 71 (albeit in only 41 games) penalty minutes in the last three seasons, it seems like a nice fit for the Lightning. Grab him in pools that use the penalty minute category as he will be trying to show his value to his new team.
