Shane O'Brien is happy to be back with an NHL team.

O'Brien was recalled by the Florida Panthers on December 11th but hasn't played in a game yet this season. "Just going out for morning skate [Friday] brought back a lot of memories," said O'Brien. "You know how special this is. I may have taken it for granted earlier in my career, but going back to the minors gives you a taste of reality of how lucky you are to play in the NHL."

Shane O'Brien, who was a healthy scratch against the Red Wings Friday night, could get a chance to play Saturday evening against the Sabres.

He was called up Thursday as an extra defenseman when Aaron Ekblad was unable to practice due to an undisclosed injury. If O'Brien does get the chance to play, we wouldn't be shocked if he had a throw down with one of the Buffalo players this evening.
Dec 13 - 10:20 AM

The Florida Panthers have recalled Shane O'Brien from the minors.

O'Brien was recalled when Aaron Ekblad was unable to go in practice on Thursday with an undisclosed ailment. O'Brien inked a two-way contract just before the start of the season and had five goals and 13 points with 40 penalty minutes in 19 games for San Antonio of the AHL. It will be his penalty minute totals that give him some fantasy value.
Dec 11 - 11:28 PM

Shane O'Brien has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Florida Panthers.

The Panthers also placed O'Brien on waivers with the intention of sending him to the minors. He attended training camp with Florida on a professional tryout after he split the 2013-14 campaign between the Calgary Flames and the club's AHL affiliate in Abbotsford.
Oct 6 - 12:42 PM

Florida Panthers’ general manager Dale Tallon has offered defenseman Shane O’Brien a contract.

Tallon is waiting to hear back from O’Brien and his agent. The 31-year-old is in camp on a pro tryout. If O’Brien does sign, he should produce a good amount of penalty minutes throughout the season.
Oct 5 - 10:50 AM

The Florida Panthers are interested in signing Shane O'Brien.

O'Brien has been taking part in Florida's training camp on a tryout basis. We'll have to wait and see if the two sides can agree to terms though as O'Brien might not be interested in a two-way deal if that's all the Panthers end up offering him.
Oct 3 - 12:30 PM

Shane O'Brien is already working hard in informal workouts as he attempts to make the Panthers' roster.

He is going to attend camp on a tryout basis. O'Brien brings only one thing to the table of interest to poolies--penalty minutes. If O'Brien does make the squad and you need some PIMS from your blueline, the veteran could be a viable pick. However bear in mind, he will likely be a healthy scratch from time to time.
Sep 13 - 11:00 AM

Shane O'Brien will join the Florida Panthers at training camp on a professional tryout.

He was bought out by the Flames in July after he split time between the NHL and AHL last season. In 45 appearances with Calgary, O'Brien had three assists and 58 penalty minutes.
Sep 3 - 11:27 AM

Shane O'Brien cleared waivers on Tuesday and is now an unrestricted free agent.

O'Brien will be bought out by the Flames as he still had a year left on his contract at $2.2 million. He played 45 games for the Flames but was in the minors after being sent down on January 26.
Jul 1 - 12:06 PM

Shane O'Brien has been placed on unconditional waivers by the Calgary Flames.

He's expected to be bought out by the Flames once he clears. He had one season left on a deal worth $2.2 million. O'Brien was sent down to the minors in late January after he suited up in 45 games for Calgary.
Jun 30 - 12:44 PM

The Calgary Flames will try and trade defenseman Shane O'Brien.

The Flames placed O'Brien on waivers Saturday and he passed through but president Brian Burke thought that the year remaining on his contract was the reason for the defenseman going unclaimed. "Shane cleared (Sunday ) and we thought someone might grab him because he's a good player," Burke said. "Obviously the extra year of his contract is the killer, so now we'll see if we can structure a trade (in the new CBA you can retain salary deals) and we'll see if there's a team that would take him if we aren't part of the obligations . . . that will be the first order of the day — to see if we can structure a deal for him." Calgary sent him to the minors Sunday.
Jan 27 - 5:44 AM

The Calgary Flames successfully sent Shane O'Brien to the AHL, as he'll report to the Abbotsford Heat after clearing waivers on Sunday.

O'Brien has been solid for PIM this season (58 in 45 GP) and in his career (911 in 528 GP), and that's about it for fantasy value. There are guys who get bigger PIM, so this isn't a huge loss.
Jan 26 - 1:01 PM

Shane O'Brien has been placed on waivers.

In 45 games this season, he has three assists, 58 penalty minutes and a minus-3 rating. Teams looking to add some toughness to their back ends may take a look at claiming him.
Jan 25 - 2:39 PM

Shane O'Brien will suit up in Thursday's game against the St. Louis Blues.

He was a healthy scratch in Tuesday's loss to Phoenix after he earned an assist in Monday's win over Colorado. O'Brein has averaged just 11:03 of ice time in 38 appearances this season.
