Date:

Jack Johnson is expected to become a free agent on July 1st.

This news isn't surprising considering Johnson asked to be traded during the season and didn't play at all during the playoffs. The 31-year-old had three goals and 11 points in 77 games in 2017-18. He's still capable of being an effective bottom-pairing defenseman at this stage of his career. If his contract demands are reasonable, Johnson shouldn't have a difficult time finding a new team.
Jun 9 - 8:57 PM

It's likely that Jack Johnson's tenure with the Columbus Blue Jackets has ended with a whimper.

Columbus, which was eliminated from the playoffs on Monday, didn't use Johnson at all in the first round series. He did appear in 77 regular season games, but his role had declined somewhat and it had appeared for a while that he was falling out of favor. He even requested a trade earlier in the season in the hopes that he would end up with a team that would use him more, but that didn't happen. Now he'll likely test the free agent market instead as we don't expect Columbus to offer him a significant contract after declining to even use him in the postseason.
Apr 24 - 4:57 AM

Jack Johnson will be a healthy scratch in Game 6 against the Washington Capitals on Monday night.

The 31-year-old has been a healthy scratch in every game during this series. He skated with the regulars on Sunday, so some expected him to play tonight, but that's not the case. He had three goals and 11 points in 77 games this season. Scott Harrington, Taylor Chorney, Alex Brodhurst, Markus Hannikainen, Dean Kukan, Jeff Zatkoff and Sonny Milano will also watch the game from the press box.
Apr 23 - 7:15 PM

Jack Johnson skated with the regulars on Sunday instead of the group of reserves.

Johnson has yet to get into a playoff game this season and it looks like it might be more of the same Monday as coach John Tortorella said there would be no changes to his lineup. Johnson requested a trade out of Columbus weeks ago and it seems like he will get his wish in the off-season.
Apr 23 - 7:33 AM

Jack Johnson will be a healthy scratch in Game 4 against the Washington Capitals on Thursday night.

Johnson still hasn't played in a playoff game this postseason. The 31-year-old had three goals and 11 points in 77 games this season. He had asked for a trade out of Columbus, but the team never delivered on that request. Scott Harrington, Taylor Chorney, Alex Broadhurst, Markus Hannikainen and goalie Jeff Zatkoff will also watch the game from the press box.
Apr 19 - 7:15 PM

Jack Johnson will be a healthy scratch in Game 3 against Washington on Tuesday night.

The 31-year-old had three goals and eight assists in 77 games this season. He was also scratched in the first two games of the series. Scott Harrington, Taylor Chorney, Markus Hannikainen, Alex Broadhurst and Jeff Zatkoff will also watch the game from the press box.

Jack Johnson believes he'll be back in the lineup on Tuesday.

Johnson has served as a healthy scratch for five straight games. Markus Nutivaara is dealing with an upper-body injury though, so the Blue Jackets have to shake up their defensive pairings. The Blue Jackets have 10 defensemen at the moment, so they're dealing with a substantial logjam.
Apr 3 - 8:53 AM

The Columbus Blue Jackets will have Jack Johnson as a healthy scratch today.

Johnson joins a long list that includes Scott Harrington, Taylor Chorney, Dean Kukan, Eric Robinson and Alex Broadhurst. Nick Foligno (lower body), Lukas Sedlak (upper body) and Josh Anderson (knee) will also miss the game.
Mar 31 - 3:57 PM

The Columbus Blue Jackets will scratch Jack Johnson again tonight.

It'll be back-to-back games that Johnson sits for Columbus. He'll be joined in the press box by Taylor Chorney, Scott Harrington, Markus Hannikainen and Dean Kukan,
Mar 24 - 6:10 PM

Jack Johnson will be a healthy scratch in Thursday's game against the Florida Panthers.

Johnson and Brandon Dubinsky are among the veteran scratches for the Blue Jackets on Thursday night. The blue liner has three goals and 10 points in 74 games this season. Taylor Chorney, Scott Harrington, Markus Hannikainen and Dean Kukan are also expected to watch the game from the press box.
Mar 22 - 6:40 PM

Jack Johnson confirmed that he requested a trade.

"It's never good to let things fester, hold everything in," Johnson said. "I've been holding a lot of things in for many years here. Yeah, it's out. I own it, and I have nothing to hide. That's the situation. Like I said before, you're just trying to do what's best for your family … I think any husband or father can relate to that." Johnson is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and he's looking to sign what could be his last big contract. Meanwhile, his role with the Blue Jackets has declined this season, in part due to his inconsistent play, so he feel that an opportunity elsewhere might be best for him. As far as Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella is concerned, he trusts Johnson and understands where the blueliner is coming from. It doesn't seem like Johnson's trade request will make things awkward and as long as he's with the Blue Jackets, he should continue to do his best.
Jan 18 - 3:10 PM

Jack Johnson requested a trade weeks ago because he needs one more big contract.

Johnson feels that the Blue Jackets have a strong blueline and he is not getting the ice time needed for another big contract. He turned 31 on Saturday and wants the big deal to take care of his family as he had to declare bankruptcy four years ago. "It has been an inconsistent year for Jack," coach John Tortorella said. "If we’re going to have any sniff at all to play extra games after regular-season hockey, he has to be a part of it. We know that. He has to be a part of it. I believe he can be. I have so much respect for him because I know he’s such a great competitor. I think he’ll find his way. I thought he took a step in the right direction [Friday]. We tried to give him more ice. It’s easy to complain and be mad and show him video, but you have to give him an opportunity to answer, too. So we’re going to give Jack an opportunity here because he’s that important to us the second half of the season." Johnson has two goals and seven points in 45 games this year.
Jan 14 - 7:45 AM

Jack Johnson has allegedly asked the Blue Jackets to trade him.

Johnson, who has seen his role on the Blue Jackets blueline diminish with the emergence of both Zach Werenski and Seth Jones, wants a more primary role heading into an offseason in which he will be a free agent. He is currently fourth in playing time amongst Jackets' rearguards and is toiling on the third pairing alongside Scott Harrington. The trade request was allegedly made a week ago. Stay tuned for further developments.
Jan 13 - 10:02 AM

Jack Johnson is eager to get going this year after Columbus had a short playoff appearance on the heels of a superb regular season.

"I want to win. I just finished my 10th year, and my 11th year I want to win," said Johnson. "I hope every guy is taking the summer seriously, training and getting ready because whether you finished first in the regular season or snuck into the playoffs, if you lose in game five of the first round that's just not enough. So I'm definitely chomping at the bit, excited for next season because I'm excited every year." The Blue Jackets defender also stated that the Brandon Saad trade was tough for him because they were close friends, but he is looking forward to having Artemi Panarin as a teammate. Additionally, Johnson liked the stability of having one partner on the back end, David Savard, for the entire campaign.
