Martin Hanzal wants to focus on the task at hand, doing his best for the Arizona Coyotes.
The 29-year-old Hanzal is in the final season of his contract that dings the cap at $3.1M. "I just want to focus on hockey and make sure I can do everything to help the team win," Hanzal told Sarah McLellan. He'd go on to note that he'd have "no problem" negotiating with the club after the season. Hanzal has collected at least 40 points just twice in 10 seasons, including career highs with 28 helpers and 41 points. Expect his name to be in the rumor mill all season long. Oct 16 - 12:18 PM

Martin Hanzal has rejoined the Arizona Coyotes after playing for the Czech Republic in the World Cup.

Although Hanzal has missed a decent chunk of training camp, the World Cup has still probably left him ahead of the curve as far as getting ready for the season goes. "I feel great right now," Hanzal said. "I played already six games against the best players in the world, and I played over 20 minutes every game. The Coyotes may not ink Martin Hanzal to an extension before the start of the season.

"If there was something that made sense, we would probably take a closer look at that because Marty's been a good player for us," GM John Chayka said Thursday. "But maybe it's not a bad thing to get into the season and see how things play out." Former GM Don Maloney said he wanted to sign Hanzal to a contract extension before the upcoming campaign, but Chayka appears to be keeping his options open. Hanzal has had issues with injuries and his 30th birthday will come in February. The Coyotes will have prospects Dylan Strome, Christian Dvorak, Ryan MacInnis, Laurent Dauphin and Tyler Gaudet looking to make an impact. Hanzal can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2016-17 season.

Coyotes GM John Chayka spoke with Martin Hanzal's representatives last week.

"I talked to his representatives about his no-trade list but that's going to be our standard procedure going forward," Chayka said. "I don't want it to be seen as a leverage point or a bargaining chip. It's just to say, 'let's get it out in the open so we all know our options.' I wouldn't have been there if I wasn't willing to sign Marty to an extension. When he's playing well, he's one of our most, if not the most impactful forward." Hanzal has a modified no-trade clause and he's in the last year of his contract, so his name has surfaced in trade rumors.

The 29-year-old has one year remaining on his contract before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. The 6'6, 226 pounder had 13 goals and 41 points in 64 games in 2015-16.

Although Martin Hanzal was far from injury free in 2015-16, he didn't deal with any back issues following his 2015 surgery.

"I had some small injuries. With my style of game I play, it’s normal," Hanzal said. "But obviously, you want to stay healthy and play as many games as you can." Hanzal was limited to 64 games in 2015-16. While the fact that his back problems seem to be behind him is a nice silver lining, one can't help but wonder what might have been had Hanzal stayed healthy in 2015-16. As it is, he had 13 goals and a career-high 41 points.
