Cam Barker will attend training camp with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The former Blackhawks defender was originally drafted by the organization in 2004 with the third overall pick. Barker was shipped to Minnesota for Nick Leddy in 2010, but he was never able to display the same form he had in 2008-09 when he hit the 40-point mark.

Barker was waived earlier today and it's likely his roster spot will be taken by Derek Roy, who the Canucks reportedly acquired in a trade with the Stars. Barker has no fantasy value as a third-pairing defenseman.

Cam Barker has reportedly signed a one-year/$700,000 deal with the Vancouver Canucks.

The deal is of course prorated given that this will be a shortened season. Barker had three goals and eight points in 23 contests with the AHL Texas Stars during the lockout. He should serve as a depth or third-pairing defenseman with the Canucks.

Former Oiler defenseman Cam Barker was released by the Texas Stars of the AHL Saturday.

He did not show enough to earn a spot on the club's roster. it has been a rapid decline for Barker, who was once thought to be one of the NHL's brightest young rearguards. We doubt he will have any fantasy value again.

Cam Barker has signed on with the Texas Stars of the AHL.

Barker played last season in a limited role for the Edmonton Oilers but the Oilers did not give him a qualifying offer, allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent. The third overall pick in the 2004 Entry Draft after Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin has been a major disappointment throughout his NHL career and will now try to get it back together in the minors. The defenseman had two goals in only 25 games last season.

Despite the need for a top defenseman, the Edmonton Oilers could be in the market to trade a blueliner.

The Oilers have quantity on the blueline with eight capable of playing in the NHL. Cam Barker has been a healthy scratch for the last two games after going minus-eight in his previous five. Theo Peckham could also be available but the Oilers biggest need is a top defenseman and they will not get one unless they deal a top forward like Jordan Eberle, Taylor Hall or Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Stay tuned as a team picking up either Barker or Peckham is looking for playoff depth.

He has posted a minus-8 rating in his last five games and has struggled to rediscover a groove since returning from ankle surgery. Barker has two goals and no assists in 19 games this year. Corey Potter, who missed last three games with a groin injury, suited up in his place.

Barker scored his first goal of the season and was plus-three in the 8-4 win over Chicago Thursday as Sam Gagner celebrated Barker's return with a team-tying eight point effort, tying the Great Gretzky. Barker now has four points in 13 games this season as he returned from an ankle injury that had kept him out of action since November 10.

Barker started to participate in contact drills on Wednesday. He hasn't played since November 10th and has been limited to just 12 contests this season. "Last year I had problems with my back, but I’ve definitely never gone through something like this," he said. "But I’ve worked hard and as far as my fitness goes, I feel great and I’m just looking forward to getting back."

Cam Barker is making a faster recovery from surgery on his ankle than first expected.

He needed surgery to repair a tendon in his left ankle but has progressed substantially ahead of schedule. In fact, Barker was on skates Friday and could be back in action by the end of January which is five weeks ahead of the initial prognosis.

Cam Barker's injured ankle will require surgery to repair, so he is projected to miss at least three months following the procedure.

Coach Tom Renney said the defenseman will undergo surgery in the next day or two. "We're still trying to find out exactly what happened. He doesn't even know," said Renney. "He thought there was something wrong with his skate." Barker hasn't played since Nov. 10 due to the ailment and he is out indefinitely.
