Jimmy Howard stopped 28 of 32 shots in a 4-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday.

A tough task for any goaltender playing behind a team on their third game in as many nights. Howard faced a steady dose of shots and saw his team be outshot 22-9 after two periods. The Hurricanes jumped out to a 3-0 lead and the Red Wings didn't have enough gas to get back into it. The loss drops Howard's record to 9-9-1 on the year with a 2.02 goals against average and a .932 save percentage.

Jimmy Howard's strong play this season has complicated the Red Wings' decision when it comes to the expansion draft.

Howard missed significant chunks of the 2016-17 campaign due to injury, but when he's been healthy he's posted a 1.91 GAA and .935 save percentage in 22 games. Petr Mrazek, meanwhile, has struggled with a 2.99 GAA and .901 save percentage in 46 contests. The Red Wings can only protect one of the two in the expansion draft though and while Howard has had the better season, at the age of 25 Mrazek can still be regarded as the more viable long-term option. It'll be interesting to see how Detroit handles this situation.

Jimmy Howard will probably be Detroit's starter against Minnesota Sunday afternoon.

It has not been confirmed but Howard is coming off a very fine 35-save, 2-1 win over Montreal and, although it wasn't his fault, Petr Mrazek lost his last start 2-1 in OT to Tampa. Detroit has been rotating their goaltenders down the stretch and it is Howard's turn if that continues. Plus, Howard has as lifetime 12-3-3 record and 2.18 GAA against the Wild. The game starts at 12:30 pm so check back with us early to confirm Sunday's starter.

Thankfully for Howard, his team came up with a dominant performance in the overtime period and they eventually came away with a win. Howard now has an 8-8-1 record with a 1.91 goals-against-average and a .935 save percentage this season.
