Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland believes a trade would be the best thing for Jimmy Howard.
He lost his starting job to Petr Mrazek last season and he's too expensive to keep as a backup. Howard comes with a cap hit of just under $5.3 million and his contract runs through the 2018-19 season. "I can see on the one hand that having two goaltenders, it’s a nice luxury," Holland said. "Certainly Jimmy Howard played an important role down the stretch in our team qualifying for the playoffs. It (a trade) might be good for some careers and good for the organization. I’ve thought about it lots." The Red Wings will likely have to eat some salary if they want to part ways with Howard in a trade. Jun 17 - 9:39 PM

Don't be surprised if either Jimmy Howard or Petr Mrazek is traded this off-season.

In a post-season media press conference Detroit General Manager Ken Holland indicated that although it is a good problem to have two NHL caliber netminders, it might make more sense for the Wings and both Howard and Mrazek if one of them were traded. Interesting that Holland would allude to such a thing at this point in the off-season. Stay tuned.

Jimmy Howard is open to be traded because he says it's part of the business.

Howard lost his starting job to Petr Mrazek during the 2015-16 season before getting it back down the stretch. Mrazek got back in the cage after Howard started the first two playoff games for the Red Wings. Detroit probably wants to move forward with Mrazek in the crease, but Howard's $5 million-plus salary until 2019 won't be easy to move.
Apr 25 - 2:21 PM

Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 30 shots in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It's not the start to the series the Red Wings were hoping for. They dropped the first two games in Tampa Bay which makes Game 3 (in Detroit) crucial for them. Detroit could opt to make a switch in an attempt to shake their team up a little bit, but Howard was much better than Petr Mrazek down the stretch. It'll be interesting to see how the Red Wings approach the next game. Game 3 goes Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. ET. That one will be a must-win for the Wings.
Apr 15 - 10:39 PM

The Detroit Red Wings will stick with Jimmy Howard in Game 2 on Friday.

Howard turned aside 31 of 34 shots in the playoff opener. The Red Wings ultimately lost that one 3-2, but if they can win tonight then they'll put the pressure on Tampa Bay to win at least one contest in Detroit.
Apr 15 - 12:51 PM

Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced from the Lightning during the Red Wings' 3-2 loss in the teams' first-round series opener in Tampa Bay Wednesday night.

Howard was sharp but may have to be even sharper if the Wings are going to tie the series Friday night. Of course, there's at least a slight possibility that Detroit may decide to start Petr Mrazek in goal for Game 2. Howard played well enough near the end of the regular season to draw the start Wednesday but Mrazek actually had more starts.
Apr 14 - 12:39 AM

Jimmy Howard has been confirmed as Detroit's Game 1 starter.

There was a time when it looked like Petr Mrazek would end up with that role, but Howard stepped up towards the end of the season to lead the Red Wings into the playoffs. Overall, Howard finished the regular season with a 2.80 GAA and .906 save percentage in 37 contests.
Apr 13 - 12:29 PM

Jimmy Howard is expected to be between the pipes for Game 1 on Wednesday against Tampa Bay.

He helped get the Red Wings into the playoffs when Petr Mrazek was struggling. Howard worked in the starter's crease during Monday's practice.
Apr 12 - 8:05 AM

Now that they've clinched a playoff spot for the 25th year in a row, the Detroit Red Wings are ready to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Bolts and Red Wings will meet in the first round for the second consecutive year with the Lightning winning in seven games last year. The Bolts have been hit hard by injuries during the final stretch of the season, but the Wings won't take them likely. "They still have a lot of weapons, they have a lot of great players on that team," goaltender Jimmy Howard said. "We have to be ready to go. This year, it seems like home ice advantage has been key going against each other. But we have to find a way to steal one in the playoffs." The series is expected to get underway on Wednesday night.
Apr 10 - 11:15 AM

Jimmy Howard was solid during Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Rangers, as Detroit made the playoffs anyway thanks to Boston's defeat.

Howard wasn't tested much, turning away 17 of 19 shots including his only puck on the kill. His record falls to 14-14-5, and is the likely starter when Detroit takes on Tampa Bay in the first round.
Apr 9 - 3:57 PM

Confirming an earlier report, Jimmy Howard will get the start in goal Saturday afternoon against Ottawa.

This is a crucial game for the Wings as a win would clinch a playoff berth. Howard has been Detroit's better goalie down the stretch and he deserves the start in Saturday's matinee. Make sure you have him active early as the game starts at 12:30 EDT.
Apr 9 - 9:15 AM

Jimmy Howard will face the NY Rangers on Saturday afternoon.

Over his last 10 games, Howard has gone 6-3-0 with 23 goals against and a .903 save percentage. However with the Rangers struggling and without some of their top talent, this could be another stealthy win for the veteran netminder.
Apr 8 - 8:32 PM

Jimmy Howard was chased from Detroit's game against Boston on Thursday night after two periods.

Howard was coming off a superb performance against Philadelphia on Wednesday, but couldn't replicate the magic against Boston. Howard allowed five goals on 26 shots, dropping his record to 14-13-5 with a 2.82 goals against average and .906 save percentage.
Apr 8 - 1:01 AM

Jimmy Howard will get the start in Thursday's game against the Boston Bruins.

Howard is coming off a 30-save shutout against the Philadelphia Flyers last night. He's playing too well for the Red Wings not to start him on back-to-back nights. The 32-year-old has a 14-12-5 record with a 2.72 goals-against-average and a .909 save percentage in 2015-16.
Apr 7 - 6:06 PM

Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard came up huge Wednesday night, turning aside all 30 shots he faced in a 3-0 shutout of the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.

Howard also registered the only assist in the game. The Wings' first two goals were unassisted and Howard drew the only assist on an empty-net goal by Kyle Quincey late in the third period. Howard has played well recently, going 4-1-0 in his past five starts. His record on the season is now 14-12-5. His goals-against average is 2.72 and his save percentage, .909. The veteran is peaking at the right time, as the Wings try to make the playoffs for the 25th consecutive season. Detroit is in third place in the Atlantic Division, two points in front of the fourth-place Boston Bruins and two points ahead of the Flyers, who hold the second wild-card spot from the Eastern Conference. The Flyers have a game in hand. The Wings can clinch a playoff berth with a win in Boston Thursday. You get the sense Howard will get the start ahead of Petr Mrazek again. Mrazek has been pulled from three of his past four starts, and Howard has been hot. Don't be reluctant to use him in one-night fantasy play.
