Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill is happy with the preseason performances of Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek.
"Over the long term of the (training) camp, both guys have been real good," Blashill said. "Every single day, whether it's been games, or practices, or small games we've played (during practice). So it's like I've said -- it's better to have real good players at very every position, and goaltending is included in that, especially with the schedule we have to start the season." It will be interesting to see how the 'Wings divide their starts heading into the regular season. Oct 4 - 11:08 AM

Jimmy Howard continued his strong pre-season play Friday night stopping 31 of 33 Toronto shots in a 4-2 Detroit win.

Howard has looked very good the past few weeks posting a 3-0 record in pre-season games as he attempts to regain the starting job he lost to Petr Mrazek last season. That said, Mrazek has had a good training camp too. We expect coach Jeff Blashill to start the season in job-share mode and then settle on one netminder, if and when, one takes charge.
Oct 3 - 10:06 AM

Veteran goalie Jimmy Howard turned aside 31 shots in the Detroit Red Wings' 3-1 preseason triumph over the Boston Bruins Monday night.

Howard's shutout bid was spoiled on a goal by Loui Eriksson with only 51 seconds remaining in the third period. Detroit's goals were produced by Drew Miller, Tomas Jurco and Andreas Athanasiou. Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask recorded 21 saves in the loss.
Sep 28 - 10:14 PM

Jimmy Howard made 34 saves on 35 shots in an easy 6-1 win over the Penguins, who sat most of their veterans but still had Evgeni Malkin and Patric Hornqvist on the ice.

Every solid performance counts, since Howard is in a battle with Petr Mrazek for ice time. Howard starts the season with a clean slate under new head coach Jeff Blashill, so preseason victories mean just a bit more to the veteran goalie than in previous years, where he was the clear cut number one.
Sep 24 - 10:54 PM

Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek will be splitting time when the season begins.

Coach Jeff Blashill will rotate them during the preseason and there will be more opportunities for them both to play when the regular season begins. Detroit has six sets of back-to-back games before Thanksgiving, so Howard and Mrazek will get their chances to impress. "If there's no separation, that'll make it a hard decision for me that I'd love to have as long as it's in the positive fashion, where they've both played great," Blashill said. A goalie timeshare would hurt the value of Howard and Mrazek, so fantasy owners should be hoping to see a 'winner' in the battle.
Sep 23 - 11:28 AM

Jimmy Howard is ready to compete with Petr Mrazek for Detroit's number one goalie job.

"There's been discussions over the summer," he said. "[Coach Jeff Blashill] and I sat down and went to lunch together and had a great conversation. It's going to be an open battle, the way it should be." Howard was great during the first half of the 2014-15 season, but he wasn't able to bounce back after missing time with a groin injury. He is motivated to reclaim his starter role.
Sep 9 - 3:06 PM

While it doesn't sound like the Detroit Red Wings are planning on trading Jimmy Howard anytime soon, Petr Mrazek may have a big leg up after 2014-15. puts it this way: "Howard likely will need to play significantly better than Mrazek in camp, in the preseason and early in the regular season to win back the job. If the competition is close, Mrazek likely will get most of the work for coach Jeff Blashill, who won the 2013 AHL Calder Cup in Grand Rapids with Mrazek."
Aug 22 - 12:01 PM

GM Ken Holland said that Jimmy Howard won't be traded anytime soon.

That doesn't mean his job is necessarily safe, but it sounds like nothing is being pursued at this time. There's a belief within the organization that Howard will be motivated to earn back his job as the number one goaltender next season after Petr Mrazek became Detroit's starter during the playoffs. New coach Jeff Blashill will have to decide how to tackle his goalie situation at training camp, but Howard will probably get another shot.
Jun 11 - 12:41 PM

Jimmy Howard doesn't want the Detroit Red Wings to trade him over the summer.

Howard lost the starting job to Petr Mrazek for Detroit's playoff run, but he's willing to stick with the Red Wings. His plan is to compete for the starting gig during training camp. We wouldn't be surprised if Howard and Mrazek end up splitting the goaltending duties fairly evenly in 2015-16.
May 1 - 5:16 PM

Jimmy Howard hopes to use coach Mike Babcock's decision to bench him in the upcoming playoff opener as motivation.

Petr Mrazek will start in Game 1 instead. "It's going to motivate anyone," Howard said. "Obviously, you want to be out there competing with the guys but it's (Babcock's) decision. Just continue to work and if my number is called upon be there to respond for the guys." Howard struggled in the second half of the regular season and finished 2014-15 with a 2.44 GAA and .910 save percentage in 53 contests.
Apr 14 - 6:37 PM

Look for Jimmy Howard to get the start in the Red Wings' final game of the season Saturday against Carolina.

Howard did not play well this season and lost his last game allowing three weak goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to Montreal. That said, Babcock needs to assess whether Howard can be his starting goalie in the playoffs and Saturday's contest could be his last chance to determine if Howard is once again reliable or whether the Wings are better off with Petr Mrazek in goal.
Apr 11 - 9:32 AM

Coach Mike Babcock isn't sure who will start for Detroit in the playoffs after a disappointing outing from Jimmy Howard on Thursday.

"They can't go in, period," said Babcock, who felt Howard allowed three poor goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to Montreal. "It's the National Hockey League. They can't go in." Howard entered the match with a pair of victories in his previous starts, but Thursday was a setback.
Apr 10 - 9:10 AM

Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 26 shots in the Wings' 4-3 overtime loss to the Habs on Thursday night.

Howard falls to 23-13-11 this season with a .910 save percentage and 2.44 goals against average. Howard had won his previous two games.
Apr 10 - 12:29 AM

Jimmy Howard will get the start in Thursday's game against Montreal.

This is an important game for both Howard and his team. The Red Wings are just two points up on Boston for third place in the Atlantic division. What doesn't help Howard's cause is that it appears as though the Wings have lost faith in him as their starting goaltender. If he's able to come up with a big win on the road tonight, there's a good chance he will open the playoffs as Detroit's starting goaltender. Howard has a 3-4-1 career record against the Habs.
Apr 9 - 5:55 PM

Jimmy Howard made 30 saves during Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Hurricanes.

Howard has now put together two consecutive quality starts and wins together, allowing just four goals over 56 shots in that span. The win bumps his record up to 23-13-10 with a .912 save percentage and a 2.41 GAA.
