GM Ken Holland said that Jimmy Howard won't be traded anytime soon.
That doesn't mean his job is necessarily safe, but it sounds like nothing is being pursued at this time. There's a belief within the organization that Howard will be motivated to earn back his job as the number one goaltender next season after Petr Mrazek became Detroit's starter during the playoffs. New coach Jeff Blashill will have to decide how to tackle his goalie situation at training camp, but Howard will probably get another shot. Jun 11 - 12:41 PM

Jimmy Howard doesn't want the Detroit Red Wings to trade him over the summer.

Howard lost the starting job to Petr Mrazek for Detroit's playoff run, but he's willing to stick with the Red Wings. His plan is to compete for the starting gig during training camp. We wouldn't be surprised if Howard and Mrazek end up splitting the goaltending duties fairly evenly in 2015-16.
May 1 - 5:16 PM

Jimmy Howard hopes to use coach Mike Babcock's decision to bench him in the upcoming playoff opener as motivation.

Petr Mrazek will start in Game 1 instead. "It's going to motivate anyone," Howard said. "Obviously, you want to be out there competing with the guys but it's (Babcock's) decision. Just continue to work and if my number is called upon be there to respond for the guys." Howard struggled in the second half of the regular season and finished 2014-15 with a 2.44 GAA and .910 save percentage in 53 contests.

Look for Jimmy Howard to get the start in the Red Wings' final game of the season Saturday against Carolina.

Howard did not play well this season and lost his last game allowing three weak goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to Montreal. That said, Babcock needs to assess whether Howard can be his starting goalie in the playoffs and Saturday's contest could be his last chance to determine if Howard is once again reliable or whether the Wings are better off with Petr Mrazek in goal.
Apr 11 - 9:32 AM

Coach Mike Babcock isn't sure who will start for Detroit in the playoffs after a disappointing outing from Jimmy Howard on Thursday.

"They can't go in, period," said Babcock, who felt Howard allowed three poor goals in a 4-3 overtime loss to Montreal. "It's the National Hockey League. They can't go in." Howard entered the match with a pair of victories in his previous starts, but Thursday was a setback.
Apr 10 - 9:10 AM

Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 26 shots in the Wings' 4-3 overtime loss to the Habs on Thursday night.

Howard falls to 23-13-11 this season with a .910 save percentage and 2.44 goals against average. Howard had won his previous two games.
Apr 10 - 12:29 AM

Jimmy Howard will get the start in Thursday's game against Montreal.

This is an important game for both Howard and his team. The Red Wings are just two points up on Boston for third place in the Atlantic division. What doesn't help Howard's cause is that it appears as though the Wings have lost faith in him as their starting goaltender. If he's able to come up with a big win on the road tonight, there's a good chance he will open the playoffs as Detroit's starting goaltender. Howard has a 3-4-1 career record against the Habs.
Apr 9 - 5:55 PM

Jimmy Howard made 30 saves during Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Hurricanes.

Howard has now put together two consecutive quality starts and wins together, allowing just four goals over 56 shots in that span. The win bumps his record up to 23-13-10 with a .912 save percentage and a 2.41 GAA.
Apr 8 - 1:14 AM

Jimmy Howard will get the nod for Tuesday's game versus Carolina.

Howard posted his worst numbers of the season in March, with an .890 save percentage and a 3.25 goals-against average in 11 appearances. He was better in his first outing in April in a 3-2 shootout win over Minnesota.
Apr 7 - 5:19 PM

Coach Mike Babcock said he hasn't decided who will start Tuesday against Carolina yet.

Petr Mrazek made four straight starts before Jimmy Howard got back in the crease for Saturday's 3-2 shootout win at Minnesota. Mrazek was in goal again for Sunday's 2-1 loss to Washington. Howard struggled mightily in March and Mrazek has had some consistency issues, so Detroit will be looking for more in the final week of the season from their goaltenders.
Apr 6 - 10:59 AM

Jimmy Howard made 22 saves for the Red Wings in their 3-2 shootout win against the Wild on Saturday night.

Detroit entered the second period with a 2-1 lead, but saw that disappear on a Zach Parise power-play goal. After a bit of a rough stretch, Howard has given up three goals on 40 shots over his past two games. He has a 2.42 goals-against average and .911 save percentage this season.
Apr 4 - 10:41 PM

Jimmy Howard will get the start Saturday night against Minnesota.

It will be his first start in five games. Howard, the number one goalie in Detroit, has gone through a rough patch the past few weeks that forced Wings' coach Mike Babcock to turn to Petr Mrazek. It will be interesting to see how Howard responds after a long layoff and against one of the NHL's better teams. We would keep him on the bench for now.
Apr 4 - 9:22 AM

Jimmy Howard is facing some adversity in Detroit's crease.

"Everything's a challenge," Howard said. "Every time you meet something, you go through something like this, it's a new challenge. There's a new aspect to it. And you learn something about yourself, and you learn something about the situation. Even at age 31, now, I come to the rink ready to learn something new, every day. So it's no different than learning something about yourself. It's just a minor roadblock. The only thing I can control is myself, and that's coming in here and putting in the hard work and having a positive attitude and supporting the guys." Petr Mrazek has been playing well and he'll make a third straight start on Thursday. Howard played his worst hockey of the season in March, with three wins, an .890 save percentage and a 3.25 GAA in 11 appearances.
Apr 1 - 11:22 AM

Jimmy Howard allowed just one goal on 16 shots in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Islanders.

Howard came off the bench in relief of Petr Mrazek who allowed four goals on just 11 shots. Howard was much better than Mrazek tonight but one goal was enough to saddle him with the loss. The 31-year-old has a 21-13-10 record with a 2.43 goals-against-average and a .911 save percentage. Howard didn't start either of Detroit's games this weekend but he should go forward as Detroit's go-to guy in goal.
Mar 29 - 8:09 PM

Jimmy Howard will be on the bench for Saturday's game against Tampa Bay and he'll have a sit-down with his coach.

Coach Mike Babcock is looking for better goaltending after Howard allowed five goals against Arizona on Tuesday and he was pulled versus San Jose on Thursday. "He's a proud guy and we gave him an opportunity to bounce back and he didn't do that," said Babcock of Howard. "We'll give Petr Mrazek an opportunity." Mrazek will start against the Lightning.
