Jimmy Howard made 33 saves as the Red Wings defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-2 on Thursday night.

Howard improved to 3-0-0 on the season, with a goals-against average of 1.62 and a .955 save percentage. While the Wings have put together an unexpected and impressive start to the season, they still aren't expected to make the playoffs so Jimmy Howard's fantasy value is limited. He has solidified himself as Detroit's number one - so far. It remains to be seen whether Peter Mrazek can play his way back into the discussion.
Oct 13 - 1:20 AM

Jimmy Howard is expected to get the start in Thursday's game against the Arizona Coyotes.

Howard was in the starter's net during the morning skate, which would indicate that he'll play tonight. He has a 2-0-0 record with a 1.44 goals-against-average and a .961 save percentage this season.
Oct 12 - 6:30 PM

Jimmy Howard turned aside 37 shots in a 2-1 shootout win versus Ottawa on Saturday night.

Howard also didn't allow a goal on three shootout attempts to win a goaltender duel against Craig Anderson. He has been superb after two games of the 2017-18 season, with a 2-0-0 record, a 1.44 goals-against average and a .961 save percentage.
Oct 7 - 11:55 PM

Jimmy Howard will play between the pipes on Saturday.

Detroit is sticking with Howard after he made 37 saves in Detroit's 4-2 win over Minnesota. Petr Mrazek is coming off a rough campaign, but he'll get chances to rebound eventually.
Oct 7 - 5:43 PM

Jimmy Howard turned aside 37 of 39 shots in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Minnesota Wild.

This was a huge game for the Red Wings, as it was their first contest at the new Little Caesars Arena. What a difference a year makes. Last season, Howard opened the year as Petr Mrazek's backup. This year, he's the clear-cut number one netminder on the team. The Red Wings probably won't make the playoffs this season, so Howard's fantasy value will be limited.
Oct 5 - 11:21 PM

Jimmy Howard is expected to get the nod in Detroit's opener against Minnesota on Thursday night.

Howard worked in Detroit's starter crease on Wednesday at practice, as he has done all week, which indicates he will get the nod. He had some injury issues last year, but was superb when he played with a 2.10 goals-against average and a .927 save percentage in 26 appearances.
Oct 5 - 8:30 AM

Jimmy Howard will start in goal Saturday night against the Bruins.

He will likely be the Red Wings' starting goalie come the start of the regular season but he will not play a full load. Look for him to start 50-55 games with Petr Mrazek getting the other 30 or so starts.
Sep 23 - 10:07 AM

The Detroit Red Wings want Jimmy Howard to suit up in 50-55 games next season.

That obviously means they consider him to be their starting goalie going into 2017-18. Petr Mrazek, who opened last year as the starter, will likely serve as the backup, while Jared Coreau will probably be the third stringer. "We’re very comfortable with Jared as a third," goaltending coach Jeff Salajko said. "I have no problem with him being the backup goalie, either. If we can keep Jimmy Howard healthy to play 50-55 games, I was comfortable with Jared in a role like that. But we obviously have Petr back - Vegas didn’t have interest in him, so I’m hoping he comes in with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove."
Jul 23 - 11:41 AM

Jimmy Howard should be expected to be Detroit's number one goaltender next season.

The team chose to expose Petr Mrazek in the expansion draft and it looks like the 25-year-old netminder has quickly fallen out of favor with the organization. If Mrazek isn't selected by the Golden Knights then the Red Wings may look to trade him during the off-season. Howard played great last season, but injuries have held him back over the past two years.
Jun 21 - 9:12 AM

The Detroit Red Wings will soon have to decide between protecting Jimmy Howard or Petr Mrazek in the expansion draft.

Detroit will need to expose one of them when they submit their list of protected players on June 17. Before the 2016-17 campaign, you would have thought that Mrazek would be the clear choice for the Red Wings as he's much younger and was already emerging as the Red Wings' starting goaltender. However, while Howard was limited by injuries in 2016-17, he was the far superior goaltender when healthy. It might have been enough to convince Detroit that the squad is better off sticking with him going forward. Of course the debate could be moot as Vegas could end up passing on whichever goalie Detroit exposes. The Red Wings could also make arrangements with Vegas so that the Golden Knights will take a different player in exchange for additional compensation.
Jun 8 - 10:47 AM

Jeff Blashill thought Jimmy Howard had an excellent tournament after turning in a good season for the Red Wings.

"Jimmy played excellent, carried on his real good play from Detroit." said Blashill. "It’s one thing to perform well and stop pucks. He looked in total control. It was a really good tournament for him." Howard finished the tournament with a 1.86 goals against average and .919 save percentage. We are projecting the Red Wings will protect Petr Mrazek over Howard for the upcoming Vegas expansion draft.
May 27 - 1:47 PM

Jimmy Howard had a strong showing in the 2017 World Championships.

While Team USA was eliminated in the Quarterfinals, Howard can hardly be blamed for America's 2-0 loss to Finland. Howard posted a 1.86 GAA and .920 save percentage in six games. He was very effective during the regular season too, but injuries limited him to 26 contests.
May 19 - 10:19 AM

Jimmy Howard has been superb for the U.S. at the World Hockey Championship.

He has posted three wins along with a 1.51 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage in four appearances. Howard's efforts have helped Team USA earn a spot in the quarterfinals of the tournament.
May 15 - 10:25 AM

If the Red Wings don't trade Jimmy Howard then he might be exposed in the expansion draft.

"It's a business, and what they (Red Wings management) decide, that's what they decide," Howard said. "It's pretty much out of your control. I haven't thought about it because you don't want to stress yourself out. I haven't spoken to anybody about it." He outplayed Petr Mrazek for most of the 2016-17 season, but he is older, more expensive and he has had some injury issues for the last two years.
