Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard made 39 saves, some of them outstanding, in a 2-1 overtime triumph over the visiting New York Rangers Wednesday night.
Howard was sensational when he denied Rick Nash from the right circle on a 2-on-1 rush with 7:50 remaining in the second period. He also made a first-rate save on Mats Zuccarello's tip attempt a little more than five minutes into the second period. Howard is now 19-8-9 on the season with a 2.20 goals-against average and a .919 save percentage. He is one of the premier goalies in the NHL and a must-start fantasy option on most nights. Look for Jimmy Howard to get the start in goal against the Predators Saturday afternoon.

He is coming off a very fine 20-save win in San Jose. Howard has played well since returning from injury and is a must start even though the Wings are facing one of the top teams in the NHL. Make sure you have Howard active early as Saturday's game starts at 3:00 pm EST.
Feb 28 - 9:55 AM

Jimmy Howard made 20 saves in Detroit's 3-2 win over San Jose on Thursday night.

It was a nice come-from-behind victory as San Jose led by a goal twice. Howard may want the game's opening tally back, though. Even if it was through heavy traffic. Howard now has three Quality Starts since returning from injury. Not a good ratio over five starts, but perhaps this is a sign things are turning around. His record improves to 18-8-9 with a .917 save percentage and a 2.23 GAA.

Howard has allowed at least three goals in three of his five starts since returning from a groin injury. He's still having a great season overall though and we're not too concerned about his recent struggles. It wouldn't shock us if Jonas Gustavsson was asked to start on Tuesday versus Los Angeles though so that he can have a breather ahead of Thursday's contest against San Jose.

Feb 21 - 5:30 PM

Jimmy Howard won his first game in a shootout this season against Chicago on Wednesday night.

He went into the "skills competition" with a 0-7 record, but felt a little more comfortable facing the Blackhawks. "To be honest with you, facing Chicago in a shootout is probably, I hate to say it, it's not easy, but it's easier because we've seen them so much playing in the West for so many years," said Howard. "I'm still learning a lot of guys in the East. Knowing the majority of their moves, that helps." He made 32 stops in regulation and overtime to post his 17th win of 2014-15.

Goalie Jimmy Howard played well Monday night but took the loss as the Montreal Canadiens came into Detroit and shut out the Red Wings 2-0.

The Wings are slumping. They`ve lost three consecutive games. But it`s not Howard`s fault. Monday, he made 27 saves against Montreal and was the victim of his team`s inability to score goals against Canadiens goalie Carey Price. The Habs scored one of their two goals when Howard was pulled late in the third period for an extra attacker.
Feb 16 - 11:17 PM

Jimmy Howard will be in goal for Detroit against Montreal on Monday.

He stopped 34 of the 38 shots he faced against Winnipeg Saturday night in his first start back from a groin injury. The Red Wings lost in a shootout and Howard felt he had to shake off some rust. Howard has lost his previous two starts versus Montreal this season.
Feb 16 - 8:52 AM

Jimmy Howard wasn't thrilled with his performance in Saturday's shootout loss to Winnipeg.

"It was great to be back out there competing with the guys," said Howard. "Not up to my standards, but I'm not going to get too down on myself right now. I'm going to watch the video and try to learn from my mistakes." This was Howard's first start since missing 10 games with a groin injury. He should be a strong fantasy play going forward.
