Although Jimmy Howard has come to grips with the fact he is no longer the Red Wings' starting goalie, don't count him out just yet.
The NHL season is a long one and changes in goaltending rotations happen all the time. Howard is off to a terrific start with a 2-0 record and a 0.50 GAA and .985 SP and the book is still open as to whether Petr Mrazek can carry an NHL team for an entire season. We would pick up Howard if you can stash him. It might be a great long-term investment. Oct 23 - 9:16 AM

Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings shut out the San Jose Sharks for a 3-0 victory Saturday night.

Howard was stingy. His 30 saves kept the Sharks off the board completely to give him the 23rd shutout of his career. Howard has settled nicely into his role as the backup goalie behind Petr Mrazek and his relaxed attitude is showing up between the pipes. This is Howard’s second win of the season, which accounts for half of the Red Wings total.

Jimmy Howard will face San Jose on Saturday night.

After leading the Red Wings to a victory over the Rangers, turning 32 of 33 shots aside including a handful of breakaways, it makes sense that Howard will get another start tonight. Still, we expect Petr Mrazek to be the primary netminder in Detroit.
Oct 22 - 2:51 PM

Jimmy Howard understands this season that Petr Mrazek is the top goalie and he feels more comfortable being the backup.

"I think I know how to handle the situation a lot better now," Howard said. "Last year I didn't quite understand how to be the backup, never had been it before. So I fully understand the role now and how to stay mentally sharp in between starts." He stopped 32 of 33 shots in a 2-1 win over the Rangers on Wednesday in his first start of the season.
Oct 20 - 7:43 AM

Jimmy Howard turned aside 32 of 33 shots in Wednesday's 2-1 win over the New York Rangers.

What a performance by Howard, as he was the backbone of tonight's victory for Detroit. The only shot that beat him was a Mike Zibanejad deflection in front of the net in the first period. Howard has only played in one of Detroit's first four games, but that might change if he keeps turning in performances like this one. He'll enter his next start with a 1.00 goals-against-average and a .970 save percentage.
Oct 19 - 11:13 PM

Jimmy Howard will be in goal for Wednesday's match versus the New York Rangers.

This will be Howard's first start of the season. He went 14-14-5 last year with a 2.80 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. The Rangers currently lead the league with 4.67 goals for per game.
Oct 19 - 12:50 PM

Jimmy Howard will be the Red Wings' starter on Friday.

Howard allowed six goals on 32 shots in Tuesday's game against Chicago. Obviously it was just a preseason showing, but this still gives him an opportunity to enter the regular season on a more positive note.
Oct 6 - 12:29 PM

Jimmy Howard allowed six goals on 32 shots in Tuesday's 6-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.

Howard had a strong showing in his last start against the Bruins, but he was lit up by the Blackhawks tonight. The Wings also got a disappointing performance from Petr Mrazek on Sunday night, as he gave up three goals on 14 shots against the Hawks. Mrazek will undoubtedly begin the season as the team's starting goalie, while Howard will be the backup.
Oct 4 - 11:12 PM

Jimmy Howard turned in a solid performance in Friday's 2-1 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins.

Howard stopped 24 of 26 shots and kept the Bruins off the scoresheet through two periods. "I’ve been working with (goaltending coach Jeff Salajko) to stay more composed and patient in net," Howard said. "I’m starting to see some dividends of working on it. Not rushing on shots and having your feet set under you." Howard was strong over the final few weeks of the 2015-16 regular season, but the number one job is clearly Petr Mrazek's to lose. That will limit Howard's fantasy value.
Oct 1 - 8:40 AM

Jimmy Howard will play between the pipes in Thursday's preseason game against Boston.

The plan is to use Howard for the full 60 minutes. Howard is competing for the No. 1 goalie gig with Petr Mrazek.
Sep 29 - 5:55 PM

This was an uncertain summer for Jimmy Howard, but in the end he's still with the Detroit Red Wings.

"Not disappointed, that’s for sure," Howard said. "I’m happy I’m here. I didn’t really want to leave in the first place. My family loves it here. I love it here. I have great friends in the (locker) room. I’m happy to be back." There was speculation that the Red Wings would shop Howard this summer due to Petr Mrazek's rise, but nothing came of that. Howard's going to be entering this season with plenty to prove after posting a 2.80 GAA and .906 save percentage in 37 contests last season.
Sep 15 - 9:45 AM

Detroit Red Wings GM Ken Holland believes a trade would be the best thing for Jimmy Howard.

He lost his starting job to Petr Mrazek last season and he's too expensive to keep as a backup. Howard comes with a cap hit of just under $5.3 million and his contract runs through the 2018-19 season. "I can see on the one hand that having two goaltenders, it’s a nice luxury," Holland said. "Certainly Jimmy Howard played an important role down the stretch in our team qualifying for the playoffs. It (a trade) might be good for some careers and good for the organization. I’ve thought about it lots." The Red Wings will likely have to eat some salary if they want to part ways with Howard in a trade.
Jun 17 - 9:39 PM

Don't be surprised if either Jimmy Howard or Petr Mrazek is traded this off-season.

In a post-season media press conference Detroit General Manager Ken Holland indicated that although it is a good problem to have two NHL caliber netminders, it might make more sense for the Wings and both Howard and Mrazek if one of them were traded. Interesting that Holland would allude to such a thing at this point in the off-season. Stay tuned.
Apr 30 - 9:37 AM

Jimmy Howard is open to be traded because he says it's part of the business.

Howard lost his starting job to Petr Mrazek during the 2015-16 season before getting it back down the stretch. Mrazek got back in the cage after Howard started the first two playoff games for the Red Wings. Detroit probably wants to move forward with Mrazek in the crease, but Howard's $5 million-plus salary until 2019 won't be easy to move.
Apr 25 - 2:21 PM

Jimmy Howard allowed four goals on 30 shots in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

It's not the start to the series the Red Wings were hoping for. They dropped the first two games in Tampa Bay which makes Game 3 (in Detroit) crucial for them. Detroit could opt to make a switch in an attempt to shake their team up a little bit, but Howard was much better than Petr Mrazek down the stretch. It'll be interesting to see how the Red Wings approach the next game. Game 3 goes Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. ET. That one will be a must-win for the Wings.
