Jimmy Howard still has five years remaining on his contract, but the 2014-15 campaign is viewed as an important one for him.
First of all, he wants to be better after his statistics slipped last season. Howard posted an inconsistent mark of 21-19-11 to go with a .910 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average. Jonas Gustavsson showed last year that he could be relied on to fill in at times when he stole a few starts, but he shouldn't be viewed as that much of a threat. The Red Wings have been grooming Petr Mrazek in the minors and he could be the best option of the three very soon. He may see action with the big club again at some point this year and he'll likely have a full-time spot on Detroit in 2015-16. Sep 1 - 10:53 AM

Jimmy Howard called 2013-14 "an OK season" for himself.

"But by no means was it a good or great season," he said. "I think I can be a lot better, a lot more consistent for the guys, and that's what I'm going to work on over the summer." Howard posted his worst numbers since a sophomore year this past season, while sporting a .910 save percentage and a 2.66 goals-against average. Howard is determined to be better next campaign and he's confident that he can be based on his past.
May 2 - 9:11 AM

Jimmy Howard said that he has been dealing with the flu and didn't have a concussion as was speculated.

Howard missed Games 4 and 5 of Detroit's first round series against Boston, but that came after he was kneed in the head during Game 3. The Red Wings lost their final two contests.
Apr 29 - 1:14 PM

Jimmy Howard will serve as Detroit's backup goaltender in Game 5.

It's odd that he's healthy enough to sit on the bench, but not start against Boston. Jonas Gustavsson was between the pipes Thursday night and he'll play again this afternoon. There's been some speculation that Howard has a concussion even though the Red Wings say he is suffering from the flu.
Apr 26 - 3:16 PM

There has been some speculation that Jimmy Howard sustained a concussion in Game 3 after being kneed in the head by Carl Soderberg during a scrum around the Detroit net.

If that is true, it would explain a lot of things. Why Howard did not play in Game 4. Why he did not practice on Friday and why he won't play in Saturday's potential elimination game. If we find anything else out we will pass it along.
Apr 26 - 9:30 AM

Jimmy Howard was too sick to skate on Friday.

Howard missed Game 4 due to the illness and he won't start in Game 5 either. He has a 2.02 GAA and .931 save percentage in three playoff contests.
Apr 25 - 1:28 PM

Jimmy Howard wasn't able to start in Game 4 because of the flu.

Jonas Gustavsson was thrust into action for his first career playoff start and he performed very well. He made 37 saves on 40 shots in Detroit's 3-2 overtime loss to Boston. Still, if Howard is ready to play on Saturday then he'll probably get the nod over Gustavsson because the Red Wings are facing elimination from the playoffs.
Apr 25 - 8:53 AM

Jimmy Howard and the Red Wings fell 3-0 to the Bruins in Game 3 on Tuesday night, falling behind 2-1 in the series.

Howard allowed two goals on 33 shots and played a good game. He let in a crisp wrist shot from Dougie Hamilton, and allowed a juicy rebound to let Jordan Caron increase the deficit, but stood tall at other times while the Wings offense was stifled once again. Both Howard and the Wings' offense will need to step it up if Detroit has any plans of knocking off the NHL-best Bruins.
Apr 22 - 10:43 PM

Jimmy Howard wasn't able to repeat his shutout performance from Game 2 as the Boston Bruins beat his Detroit Red Wings 4-1 in Game 2 to tie the series at 1-1.

Much like in Game 1, Howard made 25 saves. Unfortunately, the Bruins fired 29 shots on goal today instead of 25 in their last effort. Howard slipped under .500 in his playoff career, going 21-22 with a .919 save percentage overall.
Apr 20 - 6:12 PM

Jimmy Howard found his mojo on Friday night, kicking aside all 25 Bruins shots to lift Detroit to a 1-0 victory in Game 1.

Howard was fantastic, making clutch saves down the stretch to keep the game tied, while Pavel Datsyuk's late goal gave the Red Wings an unlikely victory. The Red Wings goaltender will need to be better than he was during the regular season in order for Detroit to make a run. Howard was 21-19-11 this season with a .910 save percentage and 2.66 goals against average during the year. Friday night was a good start.
Apr 18 - 10:38 PM

A key to the Bruins-Red Wings series will be how well Jimmy Howard will be able to hold Boston's talented group of forwards off the scoresheet.

He did a legitimate job during the regular season as Detroit defeated Boston three times but the playoffs is an entirely different matter. For his part, Howard believes an upset over the Bruins is possible. "For the last couple of years we have sort of played the underdog role," Howard said. "It's no big deal. It's sort of fun. It's a change, that's for sure. But this team can be very dangerous because of the young legs. They use their speed to an advantage out there". Howard will have to be at his finest if the Wings hope to advance past the Bruins.
Apr 18 - 10:07 AM

Jimmy Howard's four game winning streak came to a halt on Friday night as the Hurricanes came into Detroit and beat the Red Wings 2-1.

Howard faced just 19 shots but allowed two first period goals to let the Canes steal the victory. The loss prevented Detroit from leapfrogging the Blue Jackets into seventh place in the East. The two teams are tied at 91 points with one game remaining each, but Columbus owns the tiebreaker. The Wings will need a win in their final game, paired with either a Columbus loss or Philadelphia to lose their final two games in order to move out of the eighth seed.
Apr 11 - 10:54 PM

Jimmy Howard blocked 25 of 27 shots to help Detroit inch closer to a playoff berth after disposing of the Sabres 4-1 on Tuesday.

Howard pulled off his fourth straight victory, and in each win he's allowed two goals. The 30 year old is starting to rebound from a tough start to the season and an injury midway through, and is now 21-18-11 with a .910 save percentage and 2.67 goals against average.
Apr 8 - 11:43 PM

Jimmy Howard stopped 21 of 23 on Friday night, enough to earn a 3-2 win over Buffalo and giving the Wings some breathing room in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

Howard has won three straight, allowing just two goals in each of them. He is 20-18-11 this season with a 2.68 goals against average and .910 save percentage. Howard allowed a third period goal to Nicolas Deslauriers, but stood tall in the final minutes to claim the two points.
Apr 4 - 11:39 PM

Jimmy Howard was very sharp for the Red Wings on Wednesday night in a 3-2 victory over the Bruins.

Howard turned away 33 of 35 shots in the victory, which was his second in a row and lifted his record to 19-18-11. His GAA is now 2.70 while his save percentage is .910.
