Brian McGrattan made a big splash in his return from a shoulder injury.
The Flames' tough guy, who had been sidelined the last two weeks, had a game to remember. He scored the winning goal in Calgary's 3-1 defeat of Anaheim and was selected as the game's third star. Not too shabby considering McGrattan only was on the ice for 10:08 and 15 shifts. Apr 20 - 2:12 AM

Brian McGrattan suffered a shoulder injury Saturday in the second period and did not return.

McGrattan was in a fight in the first period when he took on the Canucks Tom Sestito but left the game after playing only 4:57 minutes. He has 39 minutes in 18 games this season and has surprisingly helped out with two goals thus far. No word on the severity of the injury but consider him day-to-day.

Mar 25 - 5:20 AM

Brian McGrattan's ten minute misconduct Sunday was aimed to stop inciting.

McGrattan whupped the Canucks Tom Sestito and then saluted the crowd a la Jaromir Jagr. Jagr never receives a penalty when he salutes as the referees determine that it is celebratory rather than trying to incite. The incident arose last season when Arron Asham incited the crowd with gestures after winning a fight against Jay Beagle.

Brian McGrattan picked up 15 penalty minutes in his 2012-13 Calgary Flames debut Sunday.

McGrattan got into his first altercation in 13 months as he won a convincing fight against the Canucks Tom Sestito. McGrattan was so happy that he saluted the crowd, a gesture that got him an extra 10 minutes from the referee in the penalty box. This is McGrattan's second go round with the Flames as he also played 34 games in the 2009-10 season compiling a goal, four points in 86 penalty minutes. McGrattan could be useful in leagues that reward penalty minutes if he manages to maintain a consistent role in the lineup.
Mar 4 - 5:42 AM

Miikka Kiprusoff believes the acquisition of enforcer Brian McGrattan will benefit the Flames goaltenders.

"We did get Grats so I think it’s gonna be easier for the goalies," Kiprusoff said, referring to the fact the team would like to prevent members of the opposition from taking runs at their crease. McGrattan could be useful in leagues that reward penalty minutes if he manages to maintain a consistent role in the lineup.

Feb 11 - 10:30 AM

Brian McGrattan has had a good year.

"I made it back to the NHL, got engaged at Christmas, re-signed in July, got married in July, so it has all been good," McGrattan said. "I’m a firm believer that if you do the right thing then good things will happen for you." McGrattan has also been sober for four years. He was originally nervous about how others would react when he decided to enter rehab, but now it's a decision that he's proud of. He had two points and 61 penalty minutes in 30 games with the Nashville Predators last season. His work prompted them to sign him to a one-year, $600,000 extension, but of course the lockout has complicated things.
