The Calgary Flames have sent Brian McGrattan to the minors after he passed through waivers on Saturday.
McGrattan was seldom used this season as the NHL seems to be going away from using enforcers in the lineup. He had played in only eight games this season with a minus-two rating and no points. He will get to see some ice time in the AHL. "I just want to play," McGrattan said. "Just practising every day is not the greatest. I’m at a stage in my career I’m getting a little older and you just want to play. I’m looking forward to the opportunity and challenge. I’ll go down there and be a mentor and teacher. It’ll be a nice, fun challenge to go down and help the young guys and play a big role on that team and play the best I can. (GM) Brad (Treliving) just said, ‘we want to get you playing. Go down and play well and we will go from there.’ Whatever happens happens." Jan 11 - 7:28 AM

Brian McGrattan has been placed on waivers.

McGrattan has no points in eight games this season. Given how little he's been used, it's no surprise that the Flames have decided to waive him.

Brian McGrattan could find himself to be the odd man out in Calgary once Mikael Backlund returns.

Backlund will give the Flames 15 healthy forwards so someone will have to go and that could be McGrattan who has played in only eight games this season. With fighting down in the NHL, there is not the need for an enforcer like there has been in years gone by and that could mean bye-bye to McGrattan. Stay tuned.
Jan 4 - 6:13 AM

Brian McGrattan and Corey Potter will both be healthy scratches for the Flames Monday night against the Kings.

Potter was just recently called up and has yet to play in an NHL game this season. McGrattan has not fared much better, having played in only eight games this year with no points to show for and a minus two rating. Neither have fantasy value.

Brian McGrattan has only been dressed in eight games this season.

That's in stark contrast to the 2013-14 campaign where McGrattan was used in 76 contests. We don't think Calgary will offer him another one-way contract when his current two-year, $1.5 million deal expires after this campaign.

Brian McGrattan will be a healthy scratch against Chicago on Thursday.

The 33-year-old tough guy has no points and four penalty minutes in seven games this season.

Brian McGrattan returned to the Calgary lineup on Friday after missing five games as a healthy scratch.

The fourth liner only saw 8:20 minutes of action, the lowest total on the Flames. His fantasy value lies in his ability to pick up penalty minutes but he did not get into a fight on Friday, which likely disappointed his owners.

After being a healthy scratch on Thursday, Brian McGrattan drew back into the lineup Saturday.

There is a flu bug going through the Calgary dressing room and with Jiri Hudler unable to go, McGrattan got a spot in the lineup. He played 9:03 minutes and had four hits in a 4-1 loss to St. Louis. McGrattan will compile plenty of penalty minutes and hits when he plays so if you are in need of those stats, he'll make a nice waiver wire pick up.

Brian McGrattan scored a goal in Calgary's 3-2 defeat on Wednesday.

McGrattan was playing in his 300th NHL game. The goal was special given that it was just the 10th marker and 26th point of his career. From a fantasy perspective, the 32-year-old enforcer is a reliable source of penalty minutes, but he's doesn't get enough to justify the nearly complete lack of offensive production.

Brian McGrattan scored a goal in Calgary's 3-2 loss to Los Angeles Monday evening.

McGrattan, with his second in as many games, beat Martin Jones with a spinning slap shot with 2:22 remaining to cut Los Angeles' lead to one. McGrattan now has three goals and two assists with 95 penalty minutes in 59 games this season. Mike Cammalleri scored the other goal in the loss.

Brian McGrattan potted the only goal for Calgary in its 2-1 loss to the Canucks on Saturday night.

McGrattan's goal was his second of the season, his first since Dec. 12. Of course, scoring is certainly not his forte as evident through his 95 penalty minutes this season and eight career NHL goals in 291 games. Tyler Wotherspoon and Ben Hanowski had the helpers.

Brian McGrattan returned to action on Monday March 3 from an upper-body injury.

He missed two games after crashing into the boards during Calgary's first practice back from the Olympic break. McGrattan received 5:57 of playing time against Minnesota and he registered one hit.

Brian McGrattan has been cleared for contact after suffering an upper body injury during practice.

The injury happened last week. McGrattan did not play on Saturday but could be close to returning to action. He has a goal and three points with 95 penalty minutes in 54 games this season.

Brian McGrattan (upper body) will not be in the lineup for Calgary when the Flames meet the Edmonton Oilers tonight.

"He’s getting better but it’s still painful," Calgary coach Bob Hartley said about an upper-body injury McGrattan suffered in practice last week. "Too painful to play. You see him skate, you see him shoot, but at the same time he’s not ready to go"
Sat, Mar 1, 2014 09:07:00 AM

Brian McGrattan (upper body) rejoined the Flames for Wednesday's practice.

McGrattan was wearing a no-contact jersey. He's probably still a few days away from returning and won't be available on Thursday.
