Ladislav Smid scored his first goal as a member of the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.

Calgary got Smid from Edmonton in November. He's a defensive defenseman, so it's rare for him to find the back of the net. In fact, he has just 12 goals in 522 career contests.
Mar 14 - 9:26 AM

Ladislav Smid returned to practice on Sunday after participating in the Olympic Games.

Smid played for the Czech Republic and was eliminated in the quarter-finals by the United States. "Awesome experience," Smid said. "Obviously, disappointed we lost in the quarter-finals, but overall it was a dream come true. I dreamt about it since I was little — to represent my country. It finally happened. I'm really proud of it. A lot of emotional games. I'm glad I went through it." Smid has only one goal and four points with 64 penalty minutes this season.

Ladislav Smid suited up as the Czech Republic's seventh defenseman during Wednesday's loss to Sweden.

He didn't get any playing time during the 4-2 loss. Smid suffered a lower-body injury before heading to Sochi, but that's probably not the reason why he didn't get any shifts in the contest.
Feb 12 - 3:01 PM

Ladislav Smid suffered a lower-body injury in Saturday's game against Philadelphia, but he's still going to Sochi.

That suggests that the ailment isn't serious even though he didn't play in the third period. Smid is set to represent the Czech Republic at the Winter Games.

Ladislav Smid (undisclosed) took part in Monday's practice.

Smid skipped Friday's contest and had missed three consecutive practices. However, he felt a lot better on Monday and is optimistic about his chances of returning Tuesday night.
Jan 28 - 9:12 AM

Ladislav Smid has missed the last three practices and sat out Friday's game with an undisclosed injury.

Smid was out due to 'maintenance' according to head coach Bob Hartley. Smid has a goal and three points in 52 games this season with a minus-16 rating and 62 penalty minutes, giving him no fantasy value in a season split between Calgary and Edmonton.
Jan 27 - 5:57 AM

Ladislav Smid will play for the Czech Republic at the Winter Olympics.

NHLers Marek Zidlicky, Radko Gudas, Jakub Kindl, Michal Rozsival and Zbynek Michalek will join Smid on the back end of the Czechs. Tomas Kaberle, Michal Barinka and Luke Krajick will be on the roster as well.
Jan 6 - 3:26 PM

Ladislav Smid has blocked 49 shots in 20 games for the Calgary Flames this season after being traded to them by the Edmonton Oilers on Nov. 8.

"Smid was on my wish list for a long time," said Calgary coach Bob Hartley, who has promoted Smid to the Flames' top defense pair along with captain Mark Giordano. "He’s an in-your-face defenseman. He’ll sacrifice anything and we needed veterans who want to win. He’s been a very pleasant addition to our hockey club." Said Edmonton goalie Devan Dubnyk: "You can’t care about getting hurt if you block shots, and Ladi certainly (doesn't) care." Smid hopes to be in Sochi, playing for the Czechs, in his first Olympics.

Ladislav Smid got lost on Tuesday as he tried to find the Scotiabank Saddledome for the first time.

Smid was playing in his first game at home for the Flames after he was dealt from Edmonton where he played for seven years. "Seriously, I was like, 'I'm lost. I don't want to be lost anymore.' I just pulled over and googled the Saddledome address and put it into the Google maps," Smid said. "I thought I could make it a little bit shorter than in the morning. So, I thought, I'm just going to take a turn left here. And, it was a one-way. (I live) super close, just in downtown. I guess I'm stupid. I was really good in Edmonton, but it's totally different. I've got so much on my mind. It happens." Smid has little offensive upside so his fantasy value is limited at best.

Coach Bob Hartley is thrilled to have Ladislav Smid as a member of the Calgary Flames.

The defensive defenseman will help out the Flames blueline as he is physical and blocks a lot of shots. "There's no Mr. Casual in him. He's a warrior," Hartley said. "I talked to him and he was so glad about the trade. He's a guy that shows up at home, shows up on the road. He's an in-your-face defenseman. He's a stand-up guy. He's not afraid to stand up in a room and say what he has to say, and after this, he backs it." Look for the Flames to be better defensively with Smid in the lineup and that should help out the Calgary netminders in your pool. Smid has little offensive upside so his fantasy value is limited at best.

The Edmonton Oilers have traded Ladislav Smid to the Calgary Flames in exchange for Laurent Brossoit and Roman Horak.

The Oilers have been linked to Nail Yakupov and Jordan Eberle trade rumors and potentially signing Ilya Bryzgalov. This trade is certainly smaller than any of that, but it's still surprising. The Oilers, who were hoping to compete this season, just traded a veteran defenseman to a division rival for prospects. That's not typically the actions of a team that's looking to finally move past their rebuilding process, but perhaps this is just a small part of a larger plan. Smid has a $3.5 million annual cap hit through 2016-17. He's physical and not afraid to block shots, but his lack of offensive upside makes him a non-factor in standard leagues.

Ladislav Smid doesn't think the Oilers' situation is dire despite their bad October.

Edmonton has a 3-9-2 record, which puts them 10 points out of the playoff race. "Everybody is talking 'You're out of the playoffs. You’re this and that,'" said Smid. "It's way too early. There are plenty of games to be played. There are plenty of points on the table and nobody is going to quit here. Everybody believes we can make it." They certainly have more than enough time to rebound. At the same time, as other teams have discovered before them, making up points down the stretch is very difficult even during stretches of near perfection. The Oilers can make up their current 10-point gap, but they need to start to at least tread water sooner rather than later.

Ladislav Smid will play for the Czech Republic in the upcoming world championships.

Smid had just one goal and four points in 48 games this season but is a solid all-around defenseman who led the Oilers in hits (151) and blocked shots (119) this season.
