Ladislav Smid has agreed to a four-year, $14 million extension with the Edmonton Oilers.

He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer and was consequently believed to be on the trade market. Smid doesn't do much offensively so he doesn't attract much attention in standard leagues, but he's the Edmonton Oilers' leader with 103 hits and is tied for third in the NHL with 91 blocked shots.

The Edmonton Oilers are nearing a four-year contract extension that could be worth $16 million, the Edmonton Sun's Derek Van Driest reports.

Naturally, they're reportedly in discussions; they haven't agreed to anything official yet. If that gets signed, he's obviously not a big fantasy guy (at least in terms of points), but could help the Oilers in their own end.
Mar 31 - 7:07 PM

Ladislav Smid is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season.

He's a player that the Oilers should keep. Smid leads the club with 80 hits and 70 blocked shots. He has also chipped in 35 penalty minutes. In 26 games, he has only two assists and 12 shots but those aren't aspects of his game that he's known for. Smid is currently making $2.25 million.
Mar 14 - 3:23 PM

The Edmonton Journal is reporting that Ladislav Smid missed some shifts in the second period when he blocked a Nick Leddy shot with his hand.

Smid returned later in the second and played the remainder of the game so it looks like he is okay at this time. Stay tuned. He has two assists, 31 penalty minutes and a minus-four rating in 18 games so his fantasy value is negligible in traditional pools.
Feb 26 - 8:24 AM

Ladislav Smid has returned to Edmonton after a stint in the Czech Republic Extraliga.

Smid, like many other NHL players who are skating in Europe and Russia, is returning with the hope that an NHL season will start on January 19th. In the coming days we will likely see a number of players taking at least a temporary leave of absence from their European and Russian squads as we approach crunch time in the CBA negotiations.

Ladislav Smid has suffered a sprained knee while playing with Liberec Bili Tygri HC.

Smid has returned to North America to have it examined. Liberec plays in the Czech Republic Extraliga. Smid is expected to return there if the lockout doesn't end by the time the Czech league's break is over.

Ladislav Smid ended up with two roughing penalties in his 2012-13 season debut with Liberec.

Smid's started his professional career in Liberec and he had intended to finish his career with the team. However, the lockout is providing him with an opportunity to play there while he's still in his mid-20s. Unfortunately, his return didn't get off on the right foot as his team ended up losing 5-2.

Ladislav Smid could become an unrestricted free agent next summer, but is hoping to remain with the Edmonton Oilers.

"It would be nice to stay with this young team for several more years," he said. He hasn't spoken with the team yet about the possibility of an extension. Smid is a solid defensive-minded blueliner, who will earn $2.25 million this year.

Ladislav Smid (neck) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against Anaheim.

Look for the Oilers to dress Colten Teubert in his place. Consider Smid day-to-day for now.

It looks like Ladislav Smid (shoulder) will be cleared to play on Sunday for the Edmonton Oilers.

Smid strained his left shoulder in a preseason tilt against the Wild. He was able to participate in a full practice on Friday and should be ready to go Sunday. He has no fantasy value but is a solid defenseman.
