Matt Lashoff is playing for Switzerland's Zurich Lions and, unlike his former NHL colleagues, he's already in action.
Preseason games started in Switzerland this week. "It’s different. It’s tough to compare," Shannon said of the Swiss game. "Players, for the most part, are in incredible shape. They take care of themselves. They’re very fast, very skilled. They play the game at a really fast level. The ice is bigger. It seems like the game slows down a little bit. There’s more playmaking involved." Lashoff projected to have the necessary skills to become an NHL regular. He was comfortable skating the puck out of danger and had good vision and soft hands. But like many young defensemen, Lashoff struggled when he made mistakes. He didn’t have the confidence to dig himself out of trouble. As a result, the game slipped away from him even more, and he wound up in Switzerland. Sat, Aug 18, 2012 10:49:00 AM

He participated in a preseason game on Tuesday along with former NHLer Ryan Shannon, who is also on the Lions. Lashoff spent the 2011-12 campaign with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL and his last appearance in the NHL came the previous year when he suited up in 11 games with the Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Matt Lashoff on waivers.

That's hardly a surprise, given how deep the Leafs' defensive corps is this season. If Lashoff clears waivers, he'll be sent to the AHL.

Matt Lashoff, who cleared re-entry waivers on Tuesday, is likely to be used on Toronto's third defensive pairing on Wednesday.

"He’s been playing really well in the minors," said coach Ron Wilson. "We need to get more minutes out of the fifth and sixth defensemen, quality minutes so that the top-four we’ve using don’t poop out." Lashoff has 28 points in 69 AHL contests in 2010-11.

Matt Lashoff will miss the next week or so due to a shoulder injury.

Like Brett Lebda, Lashoff was hoping to catch on as the Buds' seventh rearguard. His chances of earning that role have dimished considerably due to this injury.

Matt Lashoff will join a crowded blueline in Toronto this season after being dealt to the Maple Leafs on Friday for minor-leaguers Alex Berry and Stefano Giliati.

He played the majority of last season with the Tampa's AHL affiliate in Norfolk, where he posted eight goals, 24 points and 105 penalty minutes in 68 games. Lashoff will likely begin the 2010-11 campaign in the minors with the Toronto Marlies.

Matt Lashoff has been called up for Wednesday's game.

The Lightning were disappointed with Matt Lashoff's performance in training camp.

Lashoff had an uphill battle to begin with coming into training camp, but the Lightning never felt like he fought hard enough for a roster spot. "I don't think he came into camp vying for a job," coach Rick Tocchet said. "He's a good prospect, and I think he's going to be a good defenseman, but I don't know if he had a good camp. I think there's an urgency to his play that has to be shown. I was disappointed in his camp, yeah. I thought he would have been a little bit better prepared knowing the numbers on defense and the competition." GM Brian Lawton thinks Lashoff may have been intimidated by the level of competition he faced in spring training. Tampa Bay is overloaded with defenseman and even without Lashoff, the Lightning have nine blueliners in their 23-man roster. Lashoff will probably spend the entire season in the AHL and get another chance to impress the Lightning in next year's training camp.
