The Tampa Bay Lightning's power play has gone just 3-for-27 in their last nine games.

"We’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure it out, and it’s tough to say why (it’s struggled)," said center Valtteri Filppula. "I think a lot of times you need to make sure you are working harder than the penalty killers, and maybe we do not do that as much as we should. Then when we do get set up, we are usually one shot and done, then we have to get it again. I think that’s the main problem."
Feb 15 - 10:34 AM

Valtteri Filppula had a goal and two helpers to lead Tampa Bay to a 5-3 win over Anaheim on Sunday.

His scoring pace has slowed from his previous campaign with the Lightning, but he will still probably surpass 50 points this season. Filppula has 11 goals and 37 points in 55 games.
Feb 9 - 11:33 AM

Valtteri Filppula picked up a goal in the Lightning’s 3-1 win over the Blue Jackets on Saturday night.

Filppula converted on an errant defensive-zone pass that deflected off Nick Foligno’s skate and beat Curtis McElhinney far side for the third goal of the game. Filppula has 10 goals and 34 points this season, so he’s definitely been a bit of a disappointment from a fantasy perspective. The other goal scorers for the Lightning included Brett Connolly and Cedric Paquette.

Valtteri Filppula notched a goal and an assist in Tuesday's 4-1 win over Vancouver.

He was back on a line with Steve Stamkos and Ryan Callahan in the contest. Filppula opened the scoring with his ninth goal of the season and he picked up his 24th assist on a goal by Alex Killorn to give Tampa Bay a 2-0 lead. He has recorded two goals and six points in his last seven outings.

Filling in for the sick Tyler Johnson, Valtteri Filppula will center Tampa's second line between Ondrej Palat and Nikita Kucherov on Friday night in New Jersey.

Kucherov ranks third on the team in points with 29, while Filppula trails close behind with 24. Palat brings up this trio's rear with 19 points himself in 23 games, 10 fewer than his linemates. Tampa and Toronto lead the NHL in goals scored with 110, while New Jersey has a rookie goalie in net and has surrendered the seventh most goals, 96. Look for these guys to light the lamp.

Valtteri Filppula has been back to playing center lately after he was skating on the wing alongside Steve Stamkos.

"I like the middle, and if I had to pick, I would probably pick the middle. But I feel like in our system, how we play, it's not a huge difference," he said. "You play the position you are at in the moment. At center you take more faceoffs, and I don't mind that." The Lightning want more depth down the middle, but Filppula will probably still get ice time with Stamkos on the power play.

Valtteri Filppula posted two assists in Monday's 5-1 triumph over the New York Rangers.

Valtteri Filppula lined up as a left winger in Saturday's 4-3 win over Washington.

Coach Jon Cooper called Filppula "Mr. Utility" after playing him on the same line as Steve Stamkos and Ryan Callahan for most of the contest. "I truly believe he could play goal if he had to," Cooper said. "And he's played all over, so he can handle the position. Plus he plays a lot more controlled game, he makes really poised plays on the wall and he can spring Stammer and let him play the game fast." Filppula has 10 points in 12 games this campaign and his playmaking skills should get him plenty of points alongside a triggerman with the talent of Stamkos.

Valtteri Filppula set up Tampa Bay's first two goals, and they were pretty.

While on the power play, Filppula faked a shot from the left circle and slid it over to Tyler Johnson to tie the game at one in the second. Later in the third, Filppula took a sharp-angle shot off Luongo's pads and Ryan Callahan tapped in the go-ahead power-play goal. He skated over 21 minutes with over seven with the man advantage as well.

Valtteri Filppula seems fit and ready for the upcoming NHL campaign as he trains in informal workouts with some of his Lightning teammates.

Whatever his injury was during last season's playoffs it did not hinder his offseason conditioning program. Filppula will skate as a top-six forward and will play on the Bolts' first power-play unit. Provided he is healthy, he is a lock to produce 60-65 points, making him a solid mid-round fantasy pick.

Valtteri Filppula said he wasn't 100 percent in the playoffs, but he isn't using that as an excuse for his lack of production.

"It doesn't really matter, I was fine to play," said Filppula, who had one assist and was a minus-4 in four games. "I played, and I didn't play as well as I wanted to, but I felt fine." He missed the last two games of the regular season with a lower-body injury, but wouldn't say what his ailment was. Filppula declined an invitation to play for Finland at the World Championships.
