Brett Lebda signed a professional tryout agreement with AHL Binghamton Tuesday.
"It's just for depth," said Ottawa coach Paul MacLean. "We've got three of Binghamton's defensemen here (Andre Benoit, Patrick Wiercioch and Mark Borowiecki) and they've got injuries down there. You can never have enough defensemen, as you can see with us know. Our weight room, our medical room, is a defenseman's lounge right now, so we need some of them on the ice." Lebda skated in 30 games with Columbus last season and he doesn't have any fantasy value even if he eventually makes his way back to the NHL. Wed, Feb 6, 2013 11:49:00 AM

Brett Lebda, who had no points and was a -5 through the first 7 games of the AHL season, collected three assists in Friday night's game.

A once promising defenceman who's offensive abilities were touted now seems to be having trouble making an impact in the AHL. Lebda will have to improve his play greatly if he wants another shot in the big leagues with the Blue Jackets.

Brett Lebda is slated for unrestricted free agency this summer.

He split time with Columbus and AHL Springfield in 2011-12 and it's unclear where he'll be playing next season. The Blue Jackets haven't made their intentions known in his future with the organization, but it's hard to imagine him being brought back. In 30 games with Columbus, Lebda had four points and a minus-1 rating.

Brett Lebda will need to have a procedure done on his thumb after he "broke the tip off" of it.

"We’ll see how it goes," Lebda said. "Hopefully it’s not too long. There is no joint damage or nerve damage. It’s just the tip so it should be a quick heal. After that it’s just dealing with the pain and swelling." Lebda estimated that he would be out for a few weeks. He sustained the injury during Friday's game.

He is not currently on the ice with the rest of his Blue Jacket teammates. This news certainly won't impact fantsay leagues but we thought we'd pass it along anyway.

The Columbus Blue Jackets hoped to ease their newest player, defenseman Brett Lebda, into their lineup.

But an injury to key defenseman Nikita Nikitin (knee) has changed the plans of a last-place organization that continues to be walloped by injuries. Lebda, a healthy scratch for a 3-2 shootout loss at Detroit on Saturday night, will replace Nikitin and join Fedor Tyutin in the Blue Jackets' No. 1 defensive pairing against the Predators Monday night.

The Jackets play two games before the All-Star break and could promote Lebda Sunday or Monday. Lebda, however, has no fantasy value.
