Staffan Krownwall is playing extremely well in the KHL.

The former Flame rearguard has scored four goals and registered nine points in 11 games for Lokomotiv Avangard, good for second in KHL defenseman scoring. Kronwall has not played in the NHL for two seasons and will likely have trouble finding a job notwithstanding his scoring exploits in the KHL.

Staffan Kronwall is heading back to his home country of Sweden to suit up for Djurgardens in the Swedish Elite League.

He wants to be closer to his wife in Sweden and it beats playing in the minors with Abbotsford, so Calgary granted him permission to leave. Kronwall's contract will stay on the Flames' reserve list, which means he takes up one of the 50 spots the team has for total NHL contracts.

Expect Staffan Kronwall to play in the minors this season if he isn't dealt or picked up on waivers.

Kronwall was really hoping to play back in Europe this season or at least playing for an east coast NHL team to be closer to his new wife but that appears not to be. "I'm not training with the big group, so it's no secret," Kronwall said. "I know the situation. I can't do much about it. I'll take it one day a time and see what's going to happen."

Staffan Kronwall, who wanted to play this season in Sweden or be traded to an East Coast team, did not get his wish and will return to Calgary this season.

Kronwall is one of nine defensemen vying for a job on the Flames blueline. He wanted out of Calgary to make it easier for his wife to travel back and forth from Sweden. "It had nothing to do with Calgary, me wanting to go back home. I got married this summer and my wife is going to stay back home this year, and it's tough to have a long-distance thing," Kronwall said. "I feel the hockey is just as good in Sweden as in Abbotsford, probably even better, and I could be with my family." He will likely shuffle back and forth between Calgary and Abbotsford of the AHL unless a deal can be worked out later in the season. He has no fantasy value.
