Mike Green continued his hot streak, scoring his third goal of the season in the Capitals 3-2 loss to Edmonton on Wednesday.
After being held pointless for the first time all season by Florida, Green got right back on the horse with his third goal of the season against the Oilers. Green also had four shots on goal and logged nearly 20 minutes of ice time in the loss. Fantasy owners looking for a bounce back campaign from Green have to be pretty impressed so far with three goals and three assists in five games. John Carlson scored the other goal giving the Capitals strong offense from the back-end. Oct 23 - 12:53 AM

Mike Green continued his hot start to the season with two assists in Washington's 6-2 win over New Jersey on Thursday night.

Green now has two goals and five points in three games during the first week of the season. The up-and-down blueliner who had 76 points in 75 games in 2009-10 only had 57 points in 114 games in the following three seasons. Green rebounded with 38 points in 70 games last season, and early on in 2014-15, looks like he might have a shot at rediscovering his elite scoring touch.

It appears that Mike Green is over his upper-body injury and will play for the Washington Capitals against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.

He missed the first Capitals game and is a constant injury worry, yet still carries dangerous scoring potential, especially with the motivation of a contract year driving him. It will be interesting to see how the Capitals utilize him with the addition of Matt Niskanen.

Mike Green (upper body) will travel with the Capitals to Boston Saturday but still may not play.

Coach Barry Trotz does not want to aggravate the injury and have it become a problem for a long time and would rather give Green an extra few days to make sure the injury heals. Stay tuned.
Oct 11 - 10:03 AM

Mike Green (upper body) remains questionable for Washington's season opener.

Green might not end up missing much time due to this injury either way, but his health has been an ongoing concern for years. He was limited to just 70 games, but that still made it his healthiest season since 2009-10.
Oct 8 - 6:54 PM

Mike Green is excited about the new season under Barry Trotz.

Green has had some tough seasons of late and had only 38 points in 70 games. It was thought that John Carlson would play on the first power play with Alex Ovechkin but it looks like Green is back on the first unit which will help his point totals. The new coaching staff want him to carry the puck more to take advantage of his skating ability but use his stick more on defense when he doesn't have the puck. "This time I'm really excited to get going here," Green said. "The changes that were made as far as systems and structure, we’re utilizing the personnel we have and I’m really excited to get going here." Green only played twice in the pre-season due to an upper body injury and his status for the opener is still up in the air as the Capitals open at home against Montreal Thursday. Expect a 50-60 point season from Green if he can stay healthy.
Oct 5 - 11:21 AM

The Washington Capitals label defenseman Mike Green as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.

It doesn't sound major, though you never know with teams being very coy about injuries all year long in current times. Health is obviously a big hurdle for Green, who still seems to possess the potential to be a difference-maker in fantasy. As usual, take caution when drafting the scoring blueliner.
Sep 27 - 12:33 PM

There are no on-going contract negotiations between Mike Green and the Washington Capitals.

Green is in the final year of his contract that will pay him $6.25 million with a cap hit of $6,083,333. "No, I think there’s a lot of uncertainty here," GM Brian MacLellan said, when asked if negotiations had begun. "I think we need to get into the season, see how our D pans out, what the pairs are like, how it looks. I think we need to play some games." A lot of players play their best in a contract year so Green needs to perform this season in order to get a good contract from the Capitals. He had only 38 points and 64 penalty minutes in 70 games last season so a 45-50 point season is not out of the question if he can remain healthy.
Sep 21 - 10:49 AM

Capitals coach Barry Trotz is excited about what Mike Green might accomplish this season.

"He's such a dynamic player and I'm quite excited to work with Mike," Trotz said of Green. "I think what we're going to do as a team will be right up his alley, with handling pucks and moving pucks and getting up in the play and being an active part of the attack. The areas he needs to work on is around the cage, some of the boxing out. When he does that his skill set is phenomenal and we want to be able to emphasize those assets." Trotz was originally not sure if his direct approach would be best for Green, but he is more upbeat after the two had an opportunity to talk. Green is entering the contract season of his three-year, $18.25 million deal and is hoping to start producing like he used to. He's far from a safe bet to do that, especially given his injury history.
Sep 12 - 6:06 PM

Washington is still committed to Mike Green after adding a pair of defenseman in free agency on Tuesday.

"He's a good player," GM Brian MacLellan said. "He had a little bit of struggles with injuries last year. He had an okay year. But we're hoping to get him back on track, yes." The Capitals brought in former Pittsburgh blueliners Brooks Orpik and Matt Niskanen on high profile contracts, while Green carries a $6,083,333 cap hit on the final year of his deal. His name came up as a possible trade candidate, but that doesn't appear to be in the cards for the Capitals.
Jul 3 - 12:06 PM

Washington GM Brian MacLellan would like to keep Mike Green and help him get back "on track."

"I guess I'm open to trading anybody," he said, "but as of right now I think we'd like to bring Mike Green back." MacLellan added that there were circumstances that hindered Green during the 2013-14 campaign, but he didn't go into detail. Green has missed chunks of the past four seasons due to injuries.
Jun 16 - 4:47 PM

Coach Adam Oates wanted to rely on Mike Green this season to be a leader on Washington's defense corps.

"He's had a lot of partners, but he's also supposed to be the guiding light," Oates said. "He's the veteran. He's the guy we count on. He's supposed to take care of them, not the other way around." Green was paired with Karl Alzner, John Erskine, Jack Hillen, Nate Schmidt and Dmitry Orlov during the 2013-14 campaign and he had trouble adjusting. He led all Capitals' blueliners in scoring with 38 points (nine goals, 29 assists) in 70 matches, but he admitted to being frustrated at times over the course of the season.
Apr 17 - 4:17 PM

Mike Green (upper body) may be gone for the remainder of the regular season.

And that likely means the rest of the year as the Capitals are close to being eliminated from post-season consideration. Green has nine goals and 38 points this season with a minus-16 rating and 64 penalty minutes. He is a tough fantasy player to figure out as he has excellent offensive skills but his multitude of injuries and a mediocre plus/minus knocks him down in the ratings.
Apr 8 - 11:39 AM

Mike Green (upper body) won't accompany the team on their two-game road trip.

He didn't practice on Monday after he left Saturday's contest against the New York Islanders due to an upper-body injury. The Capitals play in St. Louis on Tuesday and at Carolina on Thursday before returning home for two games to end the regular season. It's unclear if Green will be available to play by then.
Apr 7 - 2:38 PM

Mike Green missed the last two periods on Saturday with an upper body injury.

Green was involved in a couple of collisions in the first period including one where he banged into teammate Jason Chimera in front of his own net but coach Adam Oates said after the game that Green was not hurt then. Nevertheless, the injury-prone blueliner played only 7:38 minutes. He has nine goals and 38 points with a minus-16 rating and 64 penalty minutes. Consider him day-to-day for now.
