Defenseman Mike Green found the net three times during the Detroit Red Wings' 5-1 rout of the visiting Ottawa Senators Monday night.

It was the first hat trick of Green's career. Green has been on fire early this season. After producing only seven goals and 35 points in 74 games for the Wings last season, he posted a pair of assists in Detroit's season opener last Thursday. Monday, he scored his first three goals of the season. It was the first hat trick by a Detroit defenseman since Nicklas Lidstrom accomplished the feat in December of 2010. Mike Green is projected to play on Saturday in Detroit's preseason finale.

He has been taking some maintenance days at camp, but everything appears to be fine. "He's been skating all week; he could have played any of these mid-week games," coach Jeff Blashill said. "I felt he had two real good exhibition games, We didn't want to take any chances with him not being 100 percent." Green will start the match alongside Brendan Smith.

Mike Green missed practice on Saturday.

Detroit coach Jeff Blashill is calling it a maintenance day, but with the injury-prone Green you never know. Green is still a very effective offensive rearguard but he can't be counted on to play anywhere near close to a full season as he is brittle. Draft him accordingly.

Unfortunately, Detroit has struggled with the man advantage for most of the season. The team sits 24th in the NHL in power-play efficiency with 36 goals on 209 opportunities. "Sometimes you just need a lucky bounce to get things rolling," Green said. "Maybe we need to get a few more pucks to the net, including myself up top. Try to get those dirty goals to get our confidence up."

Feb 5 - 7:58 AM

The Detroit Red Wings need to show some improvement on the power play in the second half of the year.

Detroit is operating at 17.6 percent on the man-advantage this season which is good for 18th in the NHL. They went through a stretch where they didn't score a power play goal in 28 contests. The additions of Mike Green and Brad Richards were supposed to help, but that hasn't been the case. If they want to make a long playoff run, finding some consistency on special teams will key.
