Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill referred to Mike Green as "my kind of player."
Blashill was talking about Green's puck moving ability, which is something he looks for in a blueliner. "The best defense is getting back the puck and moving it out of your zone. And I think he does that very, very well," Blashill said. Green is projected to play a big role with the Red Wings next season and should get over 40 points in 2015-16 as long as he stays relatively healthy. Jul 27 - 9:32 AM

The Red Wings have signed UFA rearguard Mike Green to a three-year deal, $18 million.

Even though he can't stay healthy for a prolonged period of time and has defensive shortcomings, Green is still a very valuable NHL defenseman. He is even more valuable as a fantasy player due to his scoring capability and his ability to run a power play. We see Green as a nice fit for the Red Wings as he is provides a much-needed right-handed shot from the point and wouldn't be surprised if he averages .65 points per game. The question is, how many games will he play?

Mike Green's time as a Washington Capital appears to be over.

As agent Craig Oster tells it, "It’s a function of where the Capitals are as an organization, changes that have been made there and the salary cap as to why they weren’t in a position to do much more than they were." Simply put, Mike Green's price tag of $6.083M per season combined with his lack foot speed, defensive reliability, and mediocre offensive production since his back-to-back 70+ point seasons from 2008-10 are why Green will have a new home come October. That being said, he'll have just turned 30 years old by the time the season starts.
Jun 25 - 5:28 PM

Mike Green had only two points in 14 playoff games this season.

The unrestricted free agent to be could not find the back of the net in the post-season but did manage 10 goals and 35 assists in the regular season. He will need to take a cut in pay from the $6.25 million he took home in 2014-15 if he wants to remain a Washington Capital.
Jun 7 - 8:55 AM

Washington GM Brian MacLellan admitted that re-signing Mike Green is "probably going to be a little complicated."

Green was Washington's highest-paid defenseman last season at just over $6 million, but he had a diminished role after Matt Niskanen and Brooks Orpik were added to the equation. He slipped to fifth among the team's blueliners in average ice time per game (19:06) but he remained the Capitals' top option for power-play situations. Green recorded 10 goals and 45 points in 72 games last year, but he may have to take a significant pay cut to stay in Washington. We would expect him to test the market because he could probably land a much better contract elsewhere, but a return to the Caps shouldn't be completely ruled out.
May 27 - 12:32 PM

Mike Green, who is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent, says that for him it's about winning a championship and not the money.

Obviously everyone will take a statement like that with a grain of salt. After all, if winning a championship was his only concern, then he could take the league minimum on a team he's confident will spend to the cap to maximize the kind of team they can build around him. That being said, we can take this to mean that he'll be looking to sign with a contender, even if he could earn a bit more with a rebuilding squad.
May 15 - 4:31 PM

Mike Green had an assist in a 2-1 overtime loss to the New York Islanders.

Green now has two points in three playoff contests. He's looking to build off of his best campaign in years as he scored 10 goals and 45 points in 72 regular season contests.
Apr 20 - 10:16 AM

Mike Green was in on both of Washington's goals in the Capitals' important 2-1 victory Sunday over the Red Wings in Detroit.

The veteran defenseman picked up his 35th assist of the season on the game's opening goal, scored at 3:39 of the first period by Evgeny Kuznetsov. It was a power-play goal and Kuznetsov's 11th of the season. Green then made it 2-0 at 4:42 of the second period with his 10th goal of the season. Superstar Alex Ovechkin grabbed an assist on Green's goal, his 28th assist of the season. With the win, the Caps moved closer to toward clinching a berth in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Washington (44-25-11), second in the Metropolitan Division, one point ahead of the New York Islanders, will clinch if the Ottawa Senators lose to the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday night.
Apr 5 - 8:01 PM

Mike Green (upper body) has confirmed that he'll be back in the Capitals' lineup on Friday.

Green missed Wednesday's game due to the ailment. He has five goals and 38 points in 58 contests this season. Cameron Schilling is being returned to the minors as a result of Green's return.

Mar 12 - 4:35 PM

Mike Green (upper body) will miss Wednesday's game.

The good news is that Green was able to participate in Wednesday's practice. "Just making sure everything is intact so I can play properly," he said. "We’ll give it a couple days. It was good to push it to see where it’s at. It’s nothing serious, it’s a matter of getting it strong and healthy. The mobility and strength isn't there." Look for Nate Schmidt to be inserted into the lineup.
Mar 11 - 11:41 AM

Mike Green is dealing with an upper-body injury.

Green is considered day-to-day as a result. He has five goals and 38 points in 58 contests in 2014-15. He hasn't been ruled out for Wednesday's contest, but Nate Schmidt has been summoned on an emergency basis to serve as an insurance policy. The presence of Schmidt is particularly useful given that after he arrived, fellow defenseman Brooks Orpik sustained a lower-body injury.
Mar 10 - 12:03 PM

The Capitals are unlikely to trade Mike Green prior to the March 2 deadline, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Green is an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. He means too much for the Capitals, who have designs on making noise in the playoffs, and it would probably be difficult for them to find a player who fit his puck-moving mold. Green has 36 points in 51 games this season.

Mike Green will play in Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Green has been dealing with a lower-body injury but he is fit enough to play against the Flyers. The 29-year-old missed Washington's last game against the Anaheim Ducks because of the injury. Adjust your lineups accordingly.
Feb 8 - 3:02 PM

Mike Green will be a game time decision on Sunday as he is recovering from a lower body injury.

The talented defenseman will take part in the pre-game warmup before a decision will be made as to his availability so it likely will be a late decision. He has 32 points in 44 games this season. Green can become a UFA at the end of the season so he is playing for a big contract the rest of the way.
