Travis Zajac played as a bottom-two center on Saturday.
Zajac has only one goal in 12 games this season and his spot on the second line was taken by Pavel Zacha who played between Marcus Johansson and Stefan Noesen. Zajac centered Brian Gibbons and Miles Wood Saturday and played only 13:06, his second lowest total of the season. Zajac will eventually get it going but you cannot put him in your lineup at this time. Dec 10 - 8:33 AM

Date:

Travis Zajac found the back of the net in the Devils' 4-1 win against Columbus.

It was Zajac's first goal and point in 10 games this season. He didn't make his season debut until Nov. 16 because he was recovering from pectoral surgery. He should eventually pick up the pace offensively, though we don't expect him to average much more than 0.5 PPG even in a best case scenario.
Dec 6 - 10:18 AM

Travis Zajac will play alongside Jesper Bratt and Drew Stafford in his season debut Thursday night.

There was some uncertainty as to how Zajac would fit into the lineup given that he practiced with different wingers on Tuesday compared to Wednesday. In the end though, he's going to be starting on the second line. That means Nico Hischier will play with Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri.
Nov 16 - 1:10 PM

Travis Zajac will make his season debut Thursday night at Toronto.

Zajac underwent pectoral surgery back in August and originally he wasn't expected to be ready to play again until February. He produced 14 goals and 45 points in 80 games with the Devils last year.
Nov 16 - 11:48 AM

Devils coach John Hynes cautioned against reading too much into Travis Zajac's (pectoral) linemates during Wednesday's practice.

As previously reported, Zajac practiced alongside Jesper Bratt and Drew Stafford on Wednesday, which was a bit surprising as he was projected to play alongside Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri when he returns. However, after skating alongside Hall and Palmieri on Tuesday, Hynes wanted to give Zajac the chance to maximize the number of wingers he worked with. "Yeah, exactly," Hynes said. "Both days we did a lot of line combos and five on five stuff. It’s a chance for those guys to work in between and get a little bit of chemistry, not reading too much into it." Zajac hasn't played yet this season, but he might return on Thursday.
Nov 16 - 7:28 AM

Travis Zajac (pectoral) was able to practice again on Wednesday.

The stage seems to be set for Zajac to return on Thursday, but that hasn't been set in stone yet. "He went through practice again today and looked good," Devils coach John Hynes said. "The final check will be checking with him in the morning, and if all is good we expect him to play." It's worth noting that Zajac practiced on the second line with Jesper Bratt and Drew Stafford on Wednesday after practicing on the top line Tuesday. With that in mind, it's not entirely clear where he'll be playing if he does return Thursday night.

Nov 15 - 1:51 PM

Travis Zajac is a possibility to play Thursday night against Toronto.

Zajac underwent pectoral surgery back in August and he wasn't expected to be ready to return until February. He practiced on the top line with Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri on Tuesday. Coach John Hynes wants to see Zajac in another practice and if everything goes well then he could return much earlier than expected.
Nov 14 - 1:30 PM

There could be an update Saturday as to the progress Travis Zajac is making in his recovery from pectoral muscle surgery.

Zajac, who had the procedure on August 17th, seems to be ahead of his 4-6 month prognosis as he is skating on his own. Devils' coach John Hynes may have an update as to when Zajac will be able to join his teammates in a workout. Stay tuned.
Nov 11 - 8:52 AM

Travis Zajac (pectoral) took part in Friday's optional skate.

Zajac had skated previously, but this was his first time participating in a team practice. That being said, it was a very optional skate that only involved four other players, two goaltenders, and none of the drills involved any contact. Zajac is making progress, but shouldn't be expected to return before February.

Oct 27 - 4:12 PM

Travis Zajac (pectoral) was on the ice by himself Wednesday.

Zajac was projected to miss four-to-six months after having surgery in August, but Devils coach John Hynes noted that he might be back at the more optimistic end of that spectrum. "There’s a possibility," Hynes said. "Travis is in unbelievable shape. When a guy like that gets injured, sometimes the recovery time is quicker because the body is in good shape. It looks like he’s progressing really well." Zajac had 14 goals and 45 points in 80 contests last season.
Oct 19 - 4:35 AM

Travis Zajac expects it will be about a month before he will be able to begin rehab work on his arm.

Zajac is expected to be sidelined for four-to-six months after he had surgery on Aug. 17 to repair a torn left pectoral muscle. He doesn't think it will be long before he resumes skating.
Sep 14 - 2:53 PM

Travis Zajac will miss four to six months after undergoing pectoral surgery.

Depending on how his recovery goes, Zajac should be back sometime between December and February. "This morning, Travis Zajac underwent successful surgery to repair a torn left pectoral muscle that was suffered last week during off-season training," said GM Ray Shero. "The procedure was performed by the club's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow." The 32-year-old had 14 goals and 45 points in 80 games with the Devils last season. The injury gives first overall pick Nico Hischier an even better chance of sticking with the team out of training camp.
Aug 17 - 4:57 PM

Travis Zajac scored the only Devils goal Saturday night as they lost a 3-1 contest to the Hurricanes.

This is only the second time in his last 10 games that Zajac has scored a point. He had two assists against the Flyers March 16. This current negative streak came on the heels of five consecutive games in which he scored every time.
Mar 25 - 11:05 PM

Travis Zajac rejoined the Devils for Monday's practice.

Zajac didn't take part in Saturday's game because his wife was giving birth to their daughter. Zajac is projected to play alongside Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri on Tuesday.
Mar 14 - 8:54 AM

Travis Zajac won't be in Arizona for Saturday's game because his wife is having a baby.

Zajac has returned to New Jersey and the rest of the team will follow him after Saturday's contests. Congratulations to Zajac and his growing family.
