Drew Stafford has been playing the point on the Sabres' first power-play unit alongside Tyler Myers.
That's the good news for Stafford owners. The bad news is that the Buffalo power play is terrible with a success rate of only 8.8%, worst in the NHL. Sabres' coach Ted Nolan seems content to let Stafford and Myers continue to work on a few things anchoring the unit, so for now Stafford's position on the power play seems safe. Drew Stafford will be back in the Buffalo lineup Saturday night against the Panthers.

He missed the Sabres' last three games with a lower-body injury but participated in Buffalo's full practice on Friday and is good to go against Florida. For the record, Stafford skated with Marcus Foligno and Cody Hodgson in scrimmages Friday. If you need Stafford, feel free to activate him.

Coach Ted Nolan believes there's a good chance that will happen after Stafford sat out Saturday's shootout win over Montreal due to a lower-body injury. The Sabres returned Tim Schaller to AHL Rochester, which indicates further that Stafford may be ready.

The Sabres boarded a plane for Montreal following their 2-1 win over the Habs in Buffalo and Stafford was on it. He will take the morning skate Saturday and see how he feels. For now, consider Stafford day-to-day.

Drew Stafford centered a line between Cody Hodgson and Nicolas Deslauriers at Monday's practice.

"He came in the office the other day," coach Ted Nolan said of Stafford. "He wants to try that position. ... He sees the position. He sees an opportunity so we discussed it. We have to try different things but Cody Hodgson has got to play much better for us. We’ll see how it goes." Stafford leads Buffalo in scoring with eight points (three goals, five assists) in 16 games.

Stafford the the game at 1-1 at 3:14 of the third period. Assists went to Tyler Myers (second) and Tyler Ennis (third). For Ennis, the assist was the 100th of his NHL career.

Stafford had a goal and an assist in the loss, bringing him to six points on the season. His goal came on the power play and Stafford finished a -2 in the game.

Drew Stafford amassed 17 minutes in penalties after he took exception to a hit on teammate Torrey Mitchell.

Mitchell was caught with his head down by former Sabre Brayden McNabb. Stafford was assessed two minutes for instigating, five minutes for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct at the 11:27 mark of the first period. Buffalo opened the contest with 11 forwards and seven defensemen dressed, so Stafford's penalty-filled outburst didn't help. He has no goals and three assists in eight games.

Drew Stafford is expected to open the regular season on Buffalo's top line with Tyler Ennis and Matt Moulson.

He is set to earn $4 million this season on the last year of his current contract. Stafford could end up being trade bait for the Sabres, but as long as he's a member of the team he will be counted on to supply offense and leadership. He notched 16 goals and 34 points in 70 games last season, with the majority of his production coming after New Years.
