Greg Zanon has inked a two-year/$4.5 million contract with the Colorado Avalanche.
Zanon had three goals and eight points in 56 games with the Minnesota Wild and Boston Bruins in 2011-12. He's a good defensive defenseman, but he doesn't have much offensive upside. Sun, Jul 1, 2012 03:56:00 PM

Date:

Greg Zanon is not expected to re-up with the Boston Bruins prior to July 1.

He is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent and will likely see what's available on the open market. Zanon recorded eight points, 116 hits, 136 blocked shots and a plus-3 rating in 56 games between Minnesota and Boston during the 2011-12 campaign. He also appeared in seven playoff contests with the Bruins. He doesn't have much fantasy value, aside from his work in specialty categories, so he shouldn't be on your radar for standard leagues. Still, he should attract some interest from teams looking for a veteran defender, who doesn't shy away from the grittier work.

Greg Zanon potted a goal in the Bruins' 3-1 win over the Senators Thursday nighté

Zanon is a great a physical player and does a great job moving the puck but his fantasy value is very limited.

Injuries to Boston defensemen Dennis Seidenberg and Adam McQuaid have increased Greg Zanon's ice time with the Bruins and he's made the most of it.

Zanon played 21:59 against Washington Thursday night, the most ice time he’s had as a Bruin. Zanon nearly scored in the second period, but his wrist shot from the point caromed off the right post. He was credited with four hits and one blocked shot. "Zans has been a real good fit for us with the way we play, playing positional hockey vs. man on man,’’ Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "He’s really adapted well and done a really good job. All his strengths are still showing. He’s blocking a lot of shots. He’s a physical player. I think he’s done a great job moving the puck.’’

Greg Zanon logged 14:58 minutes in his Bruins' debut on Thursday.

The Bruins acquired Zanon from the Minnesota Wild. He started the game on the third defensive pairing with Adam McQuaid, but he began rotating partners as the Bruins' shortened to a five blueliner rotation.

Greg Zanon will make his Boston debut on Thursday night versus New Jersey.

Mike Mottau, who played his first in a Bruins uniform on Tuesday, will be the healthy scratch to make room for him. Zanon had six points, 77 hits and 104 blocked shots in 39 games with the Wild prior to being moved at the trade deadline.

Newly acquired defenseman Greg Zanon arrived in Boston after the team's morning skate and was a healthy scratch on Tuesday night.

The Bruins landed the shot-blocking specialist from Minnesota for spare defenseman Steven Kampfer prior to the trade deadline on Monday. Boston newbies and former New York Islanders Mike Mottau and Brian Rolston also joined the team on Monday via deals and they both dressed against Ottawa.

The Boston Bruins have acquired Greg Zanon from the Minnesota Wild for Steve Kampfer.

Zanon epitomizes the stay-at-home defenseman definition, as he has two goals and six points on the season, but has 77 hits and 104 blocked shots in 39 games. He's a very steady guy in the back end in the last year of a three-year deal that has a cap hit of $1,933,333.

Greg Zanon scored the lone goal in Minnesota's 1-0 victory Thursday night.

It was just Zanon's second goal of the season. Dany Heatley and Kyle Brodziak each registered an assist for the Wild.

Defensive defenseman Greg Zanon was a healthy scratch on Wednesday.

It was a rare benching for the veteran defenseman who missed 16 games earlier in the season with bad groin injury. The Wild have eight defenseman who are healthy, including Justin Falk who is still on injured reserve, so someone has to sit and it was Zanon's turn on Wednesday.

Greg Zanon (groin) has been activated from the injured reserve list.

It was recently reported that Zanon was pain free after a muscle was completely severed from the bone during rehab. Look for Zanon to play in Monday's game.

One of Greg Zanon's groin muscles has been completely severed from the bone - and now he's pain-free.

Zanon initially injured his groin on October 20th and it sounds like he then did further damage while trying to rehab the injury. The muscle will not reattach, but Zanon will be able to return to the Wild's lineup. "From my understanding, there are five groin muscles, and this is the smallest one," Zanon said. "Someone obviously knows more than I do, and I'm seeing the right specialists and people, and this is where we're at." He took part in Tuesday's practice and might be available as soon as Sunday.

Greg Zanon (groin) participated in Tuesday's practice.

Zanon will probably miss the Wild's next two games, but he might be available for Sunday's game. That being said, Zanon might be relegated to the press box from he's healthy. The Wild have been great lately and coach Mike Yeo is probably reluctant to alter his defense at this time.

Greg Zanon (groin) took part in 15-20 minutes of the Wild's practice on Monday.

Zanon hasn't played since October 20th. He's expected to participate in Tuesday's practice. Stay tuned.

Greg Zanon (groin) has been in the top-ten in the NHL in blocked shots in each of the last five years.

Zanon's reign as a leader in the category could come to an end this year as he has missed the last 12 games with a groin injury and there is currently no timetable for his return. He has 20 blocked shots in seven games and trails the leader Ladislav Smid by 38 thus far. The Wild are first in the NHL in blocked shots with 318 and that's a big reason why they are off to such a good start this season under new head coach Mike Yeo. Nick Schultz leads the way with 37 in 19 games.
