Dave Steckel hasn't engaged in contract talks with the Anaheim Ducks yet.

Steckel's three-year/$3.3 million contract is set to expire this summer, which will make him an unrestricted free agent unless the Ducks can re-sign him. He doesn't do much offensively, but he's great on the draw and that should attract the attention of some teams if he hits the open market.

Dave Steckel scored his first goal of the season on Wednesday.

It was a fluky goal too. The shot appeared to hit a defenders stick, fly high up into the air and then land past goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky and trickle into the net. Steckel has no fantasy value in standard leagues.

Dave Steckel was thrilled when the Toronto Maple Leafs traded him to the Anaheim Ducks on his birthday.

"You know you’re going to a superior team right now and it’s going to be fun," Steckel said. "Winning is always fun. I did have a grin from ear to ear, and obviously I’m a little more at ease because I have played under Bruce and Woody [assistant coach Bob Woods]. So far these last few days have been great. These guys have been great to me. It’s a tight-knit group and I’m glad to be a part of it." Steckel added that he thinks Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau is probably "best coach that I've had in this game."

Newly acquired Dave Steckel will reduce pressure on Anaheim stars Ryan Getzlaf and Saku Koivu, Anaheim coach Bruce Boudreau says.

Boudreau says Steckel, obtained Friday in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, not only brings depth to the center position but will lessen the faceoff load on Koivu and Getzlaf. The acquisition of the 31-year-old Steckel also addresses an immediate need in the middle as Nick Bonino likely will be sidelined through at least next week with a lower-body injury. "So we needed somebody in that regard because you can’t play Getzy and Saku the whole night long, and as you can see how important faceoffs are," Boudreau said. "Plus, he's a good penalty killer."

The Anaheim Ducks are hoping that Dave Steckel can help them on the draw.

"Adding David Steckel gives us another big body and depth up the middle," said Ducks GM Bob Murray. "He comes highly recommended from Bruce (Boudreau). Faceoffs have been something of a concern for us the last few seasons. Steckel is a tremendous faceoff man and penalty killer, something that will really help our club." Anaheim ranks 27th in the league with a 46.9% faceoff success rate and rank 26th with a 78.3 penalty killing percentage. Anaheim is 20-3-3 this season, so they haven't had many weaknesses this season, but Steckel might help them in their few areas of need.

The Anaheim Ducks have acquired Dave Steckel from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Ryan Lasch and a 2014 seventh round pick.

This move provides Toronto with a free roster spot to activate Joffrey Lupul (arm), who thinks he'll be ready to play as early as Saturday. Steckel has an assist in 13 games and this move shouldn't change the fact that he has no fantasy value in standard leagues.
