Matt Carkner has decided to hang up his skates after a 15-year pro career.
Carkner is one of those players that can provide some hope to those who are still fighting to get their big break in the NHL long after the conventional wisdom suggests they won't get it. Carkner didn't make his NHL debut until 2006 when he was 25 years old and that was just a one-game stint with the San Jose Sharks. After that he wouldn't get another chance to play in the NHL until 2009 when he was 28 years old and participated in a single game with Ottawa. He finally secured a regular role with the Senators the following season though and he went on to play in 237 career NHL games, recording 27 points and 556 penalty minutes over his tenure. One of the names that stands out from the New York Islanders' lengthy list of transactions on Saturday was the release of defenseman Matt Carkner.

Carkner has a history with the Islanders, including appearing in 53 games with the team back in 2013-14. He's somewhat fantasy-relevant for penalty minutes, but only if he can get on the ice, a proposition that's becoming more difficult for players of his ilk with each passing season.

New York has signed Matt Carkner to a professional tryout.

Carkner agreed to a two-year AHL contract with Bridgeport earlier this month. He earned two goals, three points and 38 penalty minutes in 19 games with the Sound Tigers last year. If he can't land an NHL spot then Carkner will return to the AHL in 2015-16.

Matt Carkner has signed a two-year AHL contract with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

Carkner didn't play for the Islanders in 2014-15 because of a back injury and when he was healthy he suited up in the AHL. He accounted for two goals, three points and 38 penalty minutes in 19 games with New York's minor-league affiliate last season.

Matt Carkner has successfully cleared waivers.

Carkner has been dealing with a back injury that's prevented him from playing at all this season. Now that he's cleared waivers, he's expected to start working off the rust in the minors.

Matt Carkner is likely gone for the season after undergoing back surgery last week.

The defenseman needed the surgery to repair a herniated disk. He is in his last season of a three-year deal and is looking at unrestricted free agency in the summer.

Matt Carkner (upper body) has been placed on the injured reserve list.

Carkner had three assists and 149 penalty minutes in 53 games in 2013-14. If he plays regularly in 2014-15, he could flirt with the 200 PIM mark.

Matt Carkner (upper body) didn't take part in Friday's practice.

At this point, we're concerned that Carkner won't be available for the start of the regular season. He had three points and 149 penalty minutes in 53 contests in 2013-14.

Matt Carkner sat out practice on Saturday with an upper body injury.

Consider the defenseman day-to-day. He will get plenty of penalty minutes and little else in fantasy pools so draft him accordingly.

Matt Carkner ranks ninth in the league in penalty minutes with a total of 77.

He has accomplished that feat in 28 games, while contributing three assists and a minus-8 rating.

Matt Carkner replaced Matt Donovan in the Islanders lineup Saturday.

The move did not work out great for the Islanders as Carkner is a tough defensive minded blueliner while Donovan is more creative with the puck and plays the point on the power play. It was not great for the Islanders as Lubomir Visnovsky suffered a concussion early in the game and could not return, forcing the Isles to go with only five defensemen and only Andrew MacDonald with much offensive flair. Carkner could see more action in the short term with the injury to Visnovsky but the Islanders could also sign Radek Martinek to a contract.

Matt Carkner is hoping to put his past injury woes behind him and to stay healthy next season.

His right knee required two surgeries in 2011, in April and October, which limited him to 29 appearances with Ottawa in 2011-12. Carkner had a hip flexor ailment last year and he played in just 22 contests with the Islanders as a result. "I'll work a little more smart, that's for sure," he said in order to avoid hurting himself again. "Nothing too crazy with my training regimen. Stuff that's basically more on-ice focused, because I feel good on the ice. For me, my main focus is being healthy and getting back out there." He can bring some penalty minutes to the table, but other than that he doesn't have much to offer in terms of fantasy value.
