Scott Powers of The Athletic Chicago is reporting that Ulf Samuelsson has informed the Carolina Hurricanes that he is leaving the organization to join the Chicago Blackhawks coaching staff.
Samuelsson was the head coach of Carolina's AHL affiliate the Charlotte Checkers last season. He led the Checkers to a 39-29-8 record and lost in the first round of the Calder Cup playoffs. It is currently unknown which coaching role he will take on. Jun 10 - 2:30 PM

The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly interested in hiring Ulf Samuelsson as their next assistant coach.

He would replace Mike Kitchen, who was fired back in April. Samuelsson spent the 2016-17 season as the head coach of the Charlotte Checkers (Carolina's farm team). He also has experience as an associate coach with the Arizona Coyotes and as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers.

Samuelsson is filling the void left by Mark Morris, who accepting a coaching gig with St. Lawrence University. Samuelsson and Hurricanes GM Ron Francis were teammates back in their playing days with the Hartford Whalers and Pittsburgh Penguins. "I’ve known him 35-plus years and he’s a quality individual and a hard-working guy," Francis said. "He has a strong coaching resume and I think he will be a good head coach for the Checkers. He will be hard on his players but I think will be fair on his players. That’s what you want in a coach." Samuelsson has five years' experience as an associate coach with the then Phoenix Coyotes and another three years as an assistant coach with the New York Rangers.

Rangers assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson could be a hot name on the head-coaching market.

There are rumblings that he will interview with Hurricanes general manager Ron Francis; the two were former teammates. The Penguins could also look at Samuelsson. The former rugged NHL defenseman did a very good job with the New York blueliners in his first season under Alain Vigneault. Samuelsson was also an assistant with the Coyotes from 2006-11 and coached Modo of the Swedish Hockey League prior to joining the Rangers.

The New York Rangers announced Ulf Samuelsson has joined Alain Vigneault's staff as an assistant coach.

Samuelsson comes to the Rangers after one season as head coach of Modo in the Swedish Elite League. Before that, Samuelsson was an assistant in Phoenix under Dave Tippett and Wayne Gretzky before him. Samuelsson's coaching career actually began as an assistant with the Rangers' AHL club in Hartford.

Coyotes hired Ulf Samuelsson as an assistant coach on Monday.

Coyotes general manager Mike Barnett said "only because of our need for a former defenseman on our staff have we elected to make this coaching change." Barnett said Phoenix signed Samuelsson to a multiyear contract to serve on head coach Wayne Gretzky's staff but did not disclose financial terms. "As a former teammate, I know firsthand how he played the game with intelligence and passion," Gretzky said of Samuelsson. "We look forward to him working with our young defensemen and helping them develop into better players." Who are we to argue with Gretzky.
