Noah Welch has been recalled by the Thrashers.

Injuries to Atlanta rearguards Zach Bogosian and Freddy Meyer caused the promotion for Welch, who coach Craig Ramsay was impressed with in the preseason. "He only played one game in the preseason, but he played very well," Ramsay said. "We were looking at perhaps a couple of the younger defenseman, but he played extremely well in the game. They said he's playing extremely well in Chicago. He's the guy that deserves the chance to play, so he's here."

The Atlanta Thrashers have signed defenseman Noah Welch to a contract.

No terms were announced. Welch played for the Tampa Bay Lightning last season after being traded from the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline on March 4. Welch has little fantasy value as he only has four goals and nine points in 73 career games. He managed only a goal and an assist in 40 contests next year. Stay away from him in fantasy drafts, unless he is a relative or close friend.

Noah Welch was a healthy scratch Saturday night against Atlanta.

He has played in seven games since he was acquired in a trade with the Panthers but has seen his playing time reduced as he has not registered a point and has a minus five rating over that span. Obviously, Welch has no fantasy value.

Noah Welch will temporarily take Nick Boynton's place as one of the Panthers' top six defenseman.

Boynton is expected to miss at least three games due to disciplinary reasons. Few details have been provided beyond that and it's possible that Boynton might be traded or be out of the lineup for a longer period of time. "I try not to focus on that because Boynton is a buddy of mine and he's a really good guy," Welch said. "It was a shock this morning hearing the news. I have to step in and do what I can do." Welch has a goal and an assist in 20 games this season.
