Thomas Greiss' strong play in relief of the injured Jaroslav Halak has pushed him into the conversation as the team's starter going forward.

"[Greiss] proved to be a No. 1 goalie in the League this season," Islanders GM Garth Snow said. "Thomas came in and displayed a great work ethic whether he was playing or whether he was backing up on a certain night. I think Thomas earned the respect from our players, from our coaches because of his personality, his demeanor, his work ethic. And when he got the opportunity to play, he seized it and he played great for us." Greiss is signed through the 2016-17 at a cap hit of $1.5 million while Jaroslav Halak has two seasons left on his contract at $4.5 million annually. It wouldn't be surprising if they open up the 2016-17 campaign as goaltenders 1A and 1B as opposed to the more clear cut roles of starter and backup.
