Leafs general manager Dave Nonis is excited about the different element Roman Polak brings to the defense.
The former Blues defenseman won’t do much of anything on offense, but does give the Leafs a right-handed shot they’ve lacked and a steadier shutdown presence. "He's a tough guy to play against," Nonis said. "If you look at the minutes he plays he often plays against team's top players. He is very physical, he's very strong. I think there's a perception that because he's so big he's not mobile, I don't think that's true at all. We think that one of his strengths is his skating ability. He's going to provide a little bit of edge." Jun 28 - 5:40 PM

The Maple Leafs have acquired Roman Polak from the St. Louis Blues for Carl Gunnarsson and the 94th pick in the 2014 entry draft.

The Blues and Buds exchange two workman-like rearguards. The move will save the Maple Leafs $750,000 in cap room and will give them a much-needed right-handed shot for the left-handed shooting Gunnarsson. Polak is also a little older and more physical than the popular Gunnarsson. Polak is also a better penalty killer, which may be the main purpose for the deal from Toronto's point of view. It looks like a fair trade but an inconsequential one from a fantasy perspective.

Roman Polak's shoulder injury isn't serious, according to Blues GM Doug Armstrong.

"It's a 2-3 week injury, shoulder, nothing serious," Armstrong said. "He wanted and we needed him out of the World Championships, but we expect him to be fully operational and training by June 1." Polak was playing for the Czech Republic at the time of the injury.

Roman Polak (ankle) took part fully in Monday's practice and he could be back in the lineup on Tuesday night.

He has missed the last 10 games with a partially fractured left ankle and will be looked at in the morning to see if he's ready to return. "I think I'm pretty close," Polak said. "I think I have the green light to go. I don't know when ... if it's going to be tomorrow, the day after. I'm going to do whatever I can to get back in the lineup and we'll see what the coaches decide."

The St. Louis Blues have placed defenseman Roman Polak on the injured reserve list with a broken right ankle.

Polak suffered the injury on Thursday and will be re-evaluated in a couple of weeks. He actually finished the game with the broken ankle. "I could see his leg was twisted up behind him as he went into the boards ... it looked bad," Blues defenseman Ian Cole said. "So I was really worried at first, but then he came back out and started playing again. Then he was flying around and said he was feeling good. You could tell he was still hurting, but you didn’t think it was anything that serious. It shows how tough that guy is." He has three goals and seven points with a plus-seven rating in 34 games. Reserve him if he was in your lineup.

Roman Polak scored a goal and registered an assist in St. Louis' 4-2 win Saturday.

Polak has three points in his last three contests, but just four points in 18 games this season. He's not an offensive defenseman or someone who spends much time in the sin bin, which makes him a non-factor in standard leagues.

Blues defenseman Roman Polak is upset with his play on the eventual game-winning goal for the Kings Friday.

With second remaining in the second period of a 1-1 game, Kings forward Dustin Penner fired a long shot on goal in desperation, but Polak's attempt to block it screened goaltender Brian Elliot and led to the go-ahead marker for Los Angeles. "It was a bad play by me," he said. "There were just two seconds left. I tried to block it and I just got a piece of it."

Roman Polak (knee) will return to the Blues' lineup on Saturday.

Polak doesn't get a lot of points, but he is a great defensive defenseman. "He's a dangerous guy to play against, he's reckless, he's physical and I think we need that in our lineup right now," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We got a little bit away from it and he brings that edge to us. He gives us a real stable third pair, which is exactly what we need."
