Leafs general manager Dave Nonis is excited about the different element Roman Polak brings to the defense.

The former Blues defenseman won’t do much of anything on offense, but does give the Leafs a right-handed shot they’ve lacked and a steadier shutdown presence. "He's a tough guy to play against," Nonis said. "If you look at the minutes he plays he often plays against team's top players. He is very physical, he's very strong. I think there's a perception that because he's so big he's not mobile, I don't think that's true at all. We think that one of his strengths is his skating ability. He's going to provide a little bit of edge."

The Maple Leafs have acquired Roman Polak from the St. Louis Blues for Carl Gunnarsson and the 94th pick in the 2014 entry draft.

The Blues and Buds exchange two workman-like rearguards. The move will save the Maple Leafs $750,000 in cap room and will give them a much-needed right-handed shot for the left-handed shooting Gunnarsson. Polak is also a little older and more physical than the popular Gunnarsson. Polak is also a better penalty killer, which may be the main purpose for the deal from Toronto's point of view. It looks like a fair trade but an inconsequential one from a fantasy perspective.
