The Winnipeg Jets have named Blake Wheeler as their new captain.
The last captain, Andrew Ladd, was traded to Chicago before the trade deadline and signed with the New York Islanders this off-season. Wheeler has been with the organization for the last seven years. The 30-year-old finished sixth in league scoring last year with 78 points. Dustin Byfuglien and Mark Scheifele will serve as the alternate captains. "For me, this is obviously a huge honor," said Wheeler. "I really look forward to being a leader on this's not just going to be us three, we have a great group of men in our room. Aug 31 - 1:33 PM

Blake Wheeler could be the next captain of the Winnipeg Jets.

"Obviously everyone wants to wear the 'C'," said Wheeler Monday. "There's a lot of pride that comes with that. Given that opportunity I would respect that and wear it with pride. That being said, there's going to be a lot of conversations had internally to try and find out who the best fit is for the organization." The Jets will probably have those discussions in the off-season after Andrew Ladd was traded to Chicago this year. Wheeler stood up as the leader of the club after Ladd's departure.

Blake Wheeler scored the overtime winner in the Jets' 2-1 win over Anaheim on Tuesday.

Wheeler snapped a shot at 3:07 of the overtime on a two-on-one break that trickled in off Gibson and turned into his 24th goal of the season. That's goals in three straight games and five in the last five games overall for the speedster. He's having a magical career year in the midst of an ugly season for the Jets. His 74 points in 80 games has eclipsed his 69 points he had in the 2013/14 campaign.

Feb 16 - 9:51 PM

Blake Wheeler scored in the Jets’ 2-1 shootout win against the Oilers on Saturday night.

He also scored in the shootout, for good measure. Wheeler had seven of the Jets’ 33 shots on net. His goal-scoring pace is down, now with 15 on the year, six coming since the start of December. He has 52 points, though, so he has been a startable player in fantasy leagues. Nikolaj Ehlers and Bryan Little got the assists.

Blake Wheeler recorded two assists and seven penalty minutes in Thursday's 6-2 loss to Boston.

He was assessed a roughing penalty in the second period and shortly after that serving that infraction he dropped the gloves with Patrice Bergeron. Wheeler also helped set up goals by linemates Bryan Little and Nikolaj Ehlers in the defeat. He has 37 assists and 51 points in 54 games this year.
Feb 12 - 7:53 AM

Feb 6 - 11:43 AM

Blake Wheeler turned down an invitation to the NHL All-Star game.

Wheeler wasn't selected as an All-Star the first time around, but a spot opened up after Hawks captain Jonathan Toews (illness) decided to pull out of the event. Wheeler turned down the invite because he already made plans with his family. The Jets forward has 13 goals and 48 points in 49 games this season. Dustin Byfuglien will be the only member of the Jets at the All-Star game this weekend.
