Forward James Sheppard, who needed more than two years and a fresh start with a new franchise to work his way back to the NHL after tearing up his left knee in an ATV accident, has been nominated by the San Jose chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association as the Sharks candidate for the Masterton Trophy.

The award recognizes perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

James Sheppard is a healthy scratch Sunday.

Sheppard isn't being punished for anything he did wrong. "Shep is coming out and by no means is it a reflection on his performance. He’s played well," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "But we have to get some people into the lineup and get them playing so they get accustomed to what we’re trying to do. And we’re running out of games to do that." Look for Sheppard to be inserted back into the Sharks' lineup in the near future.

James Sheppard scored his first goal of the season on Monday.

He did it in front of his parents who flew in from Nova Scotia to see him play. "It's a good feeling to get one, but two is still more than one so I want to keep going," Sheppard said. "I did some pretty good things, though I still would like to have that breakaway back. Like I said, Scotty Gomez gave me some good advice, just keep shooting the puck." He was placed on the third line with Joe Pavelski and T.J. Galiardi and the trio seemed to click. It was Sheppard's first NHL goal since Dec. 11, 2009 so the celebration after the game must have been nice.

James Sheppard, the 2006 first-round pick who scored 11 goals and 49 points in 224 games for the Wild before being traded to San Jose for a 2013 third-round pick, played his first game against Minnesota Saturday night.

The Wild, on a roll and playing with lots of confidence, prevailed 2-0. Sheppard missed two full seasons after breaking his kneecap in an ATV accident before the 2010-11 season. The injury required three surgeries the past two years. He has three assists in 22 games and is searching for his first goal since Dec. 11, 2009.

The two came out of the lineup while T.J. Galardi and Jason Demers drew into the lineup. Sheppard has only three assists in 20 games this season so his benching should not have affected your team.

James Sheppard has been signed by the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks wouldn't reveal the financial terms of the one-year contract. However, CapGeek.com claims it is a two-way deal worth $825,000 annually at the NHL level. Sheppard has been trying to rebuild his NHL career following a major knee injury and has 23 points and 52 penalty minutes in 34 AHL games this season.

James Sheppard has a goal and two assists in the first three games for Worcester.

Sheppard is trying to revive his hockey career after missing most of the last two seasons, following an ATV accident in September, 2010 in which he suffered a major knee injury. "We’re excited to see a player who has gone through a bump in the road, put all this work in, and come out of it on the healthy side," GM Doug Wilson said. "To see him playing the way he was playing, and feeling healthy, and having the jump back in his game, is exciting for Shep and really exciting for us, too. That factored into the risk/reward of acquiring him." Look for Sheppard to challenge for a third line job in San Jose once the lockout ends.

James Sheppard is looking to revive his hockey career with the AHL Worcester Sharks.

Sheppard has only played in four AHL games since September 2010 due to a major knee injury. "I feel really good. I feel in shape, I feel energetic, and I’m really happy to be playing hockey again," Sheppard said. He's a former first round pick and played in 224 NHL games prior to the injury.

The San Jose Sharks have sent James Sheppard (knee) to Worcester on a conditioning stint.

Sheppard was injured in September 2010, when he injured his knee in a ATV accident. He has been rehabbing ever since and this is a big step in that he will actually get into game action. The Sharks picked him up in a trade over the summer as he had worn out his welcome in Minnesota. He played for the first time on Tuesday and had four shots on goal without a point.
