Twenty-six-year-old Chris Summers is finally coming into his own as an NHL defenseman.

Summers had played only 29 NHL games heading into this season as the former first round pick from the 2006 Draft had spent a lot of time in the minors. It continued this season but Summers was recalled 12 games ago and his play has been good the last month. "It's just one of those situations where if I don't play good hockey, then on to the next," Summers said. "Personally, I think I'm at the point in my career I better start figuring it out or it's going to be a short road ahead. It's one of those things, ever since the beginning of the season getting put on waivers, even more motivation to up my game that much. If given another chance like this one, to make the best of it." He has two goals and three points this season.

Chris Summers had a goal and an assist in Phoenix's 3-2 shootout win on Thursday.

It was the second multi-point game of Summers' career. He has two goals and three points in 11 contests in 2013-14. He's a former first round draft pick, but not one with much upside from a fantasy perspective.

Chris Summers has been called up by the Phoenix Coyotes.

Phoenix wanted to give Summers a chance to practice with the team during the Olympic break. "He's got a style and role that he plays now that's become very defined," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "His skating and thinking are up to speed. It's just a matter of getting an opportunity to jump in, and he's had a few opportunities here and there. But this year, our left side's been crowded over there so he hasn't had an opportunity yet."

Summers got two assists after being held off the scoresheet in his first six career NHL games. The former first rounder isn't typically much of an offensive threat and we don't anticipate him having any fantasy value this season in standard leagues.
