The New York Rangers have announced that forward Michael Grabner will not play this afternoon due to the flu.

The situation has gone from bad to worse for the Rangers who will now add Grabner to an injury list that already includes Kevin Hayes (leg contusion), Chris Kreider (blood clot, right arm), Kevin Shattenkirk (knee), Marc Staal (hip flexor). Daniel Catenacci will draw into the lineup, his first NHL action since he suited up for 11 games with the Buffalo Sabres during the 2015-16 season. The Rangers will not have any healthy scratched for this afternoon's matchup with the Colorado Avalanche.

Michael Grabner notched a goal in Pittsburgh's 5-2 win over New York on Sunday.

Grabner now has 19 goals and 23 points in 44 games. The 30-year-old is a bit behind last year's pace and should finish in the 35-40 point margin if he stays healthy the rest of the way.

Michael Grabner scored a goal in the Rangers' 3-2 overtime win versus Buffalo on Monday.

Grabner is up to 18 goals, but his fantasy value is limited because he has just three assists. Among players who have scored at least 18 goals in a single season, just Grabner and Hib Milks, from 1927-28, have just 21 points.

Jan 2 - 5:32 AM

Since he joined the Rangers at the start of last season, Michael Grabner has scored an impressive 44 goals.

That ranks him first on the Rangers over that period of time, five more than Chris Kreider and 12 more than Rick Nash. The most surprising thing about Grabner's success is that he's managed to score all those goals with far less playing time than six other Ranger forwards. Even though he doesn't register many assists, Grabner is well worth a roster spot.

Michael Grabner found the back of the net in the Rangers' 4-1 win against Anaheim on Tuesday.

That pushed Grabner's point streak to four games. The goal was also his 17th marker and 20th point in 34 contests. Here's a fun bit of trivia: Of all the players to score at least 17 goals in the history of the NHL, Grabner's tied for the least points due to his mere three assists. The only other example of that is Butch Keeling, who in 1931-32 also had 17 goals and three assists.

Michael Grabner scored his 16th of the season Saturday.

Grabner is in line for hockey's version of the Cy Young as he has 16 goals and three assists. Grabner has all 16 goals in even-strength situations and leads the Rangers in goals despite not playing on the power play. He is also a plus-13 so he has fantasy value.

Michael Grabner scored a goal in Wednesday's 3-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

Mats Zuccarello fed Grabner with a beautiful pass to set up the Rangers' first goal of the night (Grabner beat Erik Karlsson to the net on the play). The 30-year-old continues to produce this season, as he's up to 15 goals and two assists in 31 games. That puts him on pace to find the back of the net exactly 40 times. That's unlikely to happen, but it still doesn't take away from the fact that he's been productive this year. Pavel Buchnevich also scored for the Rangers.

The Rangers forward finished the night with four shots on goal and two blocked shots in 15:43 of ice time. Grabner has 14 goals and two assists in 28 games. Michael Grabner is tracking to set an NHL record for empty-net goals in a season.

With two empty-net markers Friday night, Grabner now has six for the season. The NHL record for the most empty-net goals in one campaign is nine, set by Pavel Bure in the 1999-2000 season. With 56 games to play, Grabner stands a good chance of obliterating that mark.

Michael Grabner scored a hat trick in Friday's 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Grabner's goals gave New York 2-1, 3-1, and 4-1 leads, but his final two markers were scored into an empty net. The Rangers forward now has 13 goals and 15 points in 25 games this season. David Desharnais and Paul Carey also found the back of the net for the Rangers in this one.

Michael Grabner found the back of the net in the Rangers' 5-4 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

It was Grabner's first goal and second point in seven contests this season. He managed to score 27 goals last season, but he's not a safe bet to finish close to that mark again in 2017-18.

Michael Grabner could be an attractive option for the Vegas Golden Knights in the expansion draft.

Jesper Fast had hip surgery on Monday, so that will probably take him out of the equation for the NHL's newest franchise. The Rangers could expose Oscar Lindberg and Antti Raanta as well, which would give Vegas some solid players to choose from later this month.
