Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender coach Frantz Jean has been impressed with the "improvement" in Riku Helenius during this AHL season.

"He came in tentative and trying to be a little bit too technical," Jean said. "Now, he's really battling out there and making saves that are unexpected." Helenius has been better of late, aside from a 7-2 loss to Bridgeport on Dec. 9, with a 5-1-0 record along with a 1.98 goals-against average and .914 save percentage in six previous games. He's still working on consistency, while sharing time with Dustin Tokarski between the pipes for the Syracuse Crunch.

Riku Helenius kicked out all 21 Adirondack Phantoms shots in the Syracuse Crunch's 3-0 victory Friday night.

It was Helenius' second shutout of the season. He has a 2.83 GAA and .884 save percentage in 11 AHL games this season.

Riku Helenius has been reassigned to the minors.

Helenius signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning in June. Under normal circumstances, he would compete for the backup gig with Anders Lindback during the preseason. However, because the current CBA is about to expire, the Tampa Bay Lightning are moving players to the minors before the expected lockout.

The recent acquisition of Anders Lindback isn't great news for Riku Helenius.

Lindback and Mathieu Garon are projected to be the Lightning's top two goaltenders going into the 2012-13 campaign. If Helenius has a stunning training camp or one of the two above him in the depth charts suffer an injury, then Helenius might defy the odds and play. However, right now it looks like he'll have no fantasy value in 2012-13. The good news from his perspective is that Garon's contract expires in the summer of 2013 and the Lightning might go with a combination of Helenius and Lindback in 2013-14.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed netminder Riku Helenius to a two-year contract.

GM Steve Yzerman said the deal will officially be announced at some point today. According to a report from RDS, the first year of the deal is a two-way agreement and the second year carries a one-way pact that will garner him $650,000 regardless of where he plays. Helenius led JYP to a Finnish Elite League championship this past season. He joins Mathieu Garon and Dustin Tokarski as the team's existing goalies with a shot at the starter job next year, but there is expected to be more searching before the 2012-13 season gets underway.

Riku Helenius reportedly wants a two-year, one-way contract from Tampa Bay to get him back to North America.

His demands were reported by a Finnish website. However, the Lightning are said to view Helenius as a prospect and not as an immediate answer to their search for a new starting netminder. That means that a two-way deal is probably what they will offer and that might not be enough to convince Helenius to come back from playing overseas. GM Steve Yzerman said he will keep an open line of communication with Helenius' agent Jay Grossman.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are interested in bringing Riku Helenius back to North America.

The first-round pick of the Bolts in the 2006 draft has played two seasons in the Swedish Elite League and one year in the Finnish Elite League since leaving to play overseas. Helenius had been playing in the minors prior to heading to Europe, but Tampa Bay GM Steve Yzerman said that he reached out to the 24-year-old netminder during the World Championships. He posted a 1.64 goals-against average and a .936 save percentage in 33 games with JYP in the SM-liiga this past campaign. He recorded a 1.73 GAA and a .947 save percentage in 13 playoff games en route to the Finnish Elite League title. He isn't a sure bet to be on the team's roster in 2012-13 though and would probably have to sign a two-way deal.

The Lightning have loaned goalie Riku Helenius to Sodertalje of the Swedish elite league, according to the St. Petersburg Times.

The Lightning just assigned Dustin Tokarski to their minor league affiliate in Norfolk where he'll split time with prospect Jaroslav Janus. This also means that Helenius has fallen to third on their goalie prospect depth chart behind Janus and Tokarski.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have sent down Riku Helenius to the AHL Norfolk Admirals.

Helenius was serving as Mike Smith's backup while Antero Niittymaki was away to be with his wife, who gave birth to their second child. Helenius has a 5-7-0 record with a 2.75 GAA and .896 save percentage with AHL Norfolk this season.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have reduced their training camp roster to 29 players.

The Lightning sent Riku Helenius and 10 other players to the minors in their latest round of cuts. The other 10 players that will not make the Lightning's opening day roster are: Carter Ashton, Jaroslav Janus, Dustin Tokarski. Defensemen: Vladimir Mihalik, Ty Wishart. Forwards: Blair Jones, Martins Karsums, Juraj Simek, Paul Szczechura, Dana Tyrell.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are expected to recall Riku Helenius on Friday.

With Olaf Kolzig out for the season, the Lightning need to call up someone to serve as Mike Smith's understudy. Tampa Bay would have probably called up Karri Ramo, but he was recently handed a six-game suspension by the AHL, which prevents him from playing in the NHL.

Riku Helenius has signed an entry level deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Finnish goaltender was the Bolts first round pick in the 2005 Entry Draft, fifteenth overall. He could come to play junior hockey in North America next season. Helenius missed a good portion of last season with a shoulder injury he suffered in October during warmups. The Lightning are high on this youngster, but it could be a few more years until you see his name in a NHL scoresheet.

Goalie Riku Helenius suffered a shoulder injury while playing in Finland

Tampa Bay's first round pick in last years draft injured his shoulder during warm-ups. He is spending this year playing for Ilves of the Finnish Elite League, and is not likely to play in Tampa Bay for a couple of seasons. This injury may set his development back a little, but will not hurt fantasy owners this year.
