Semyon Varlamov stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced on Saturday night, but it wasn't enough as the Stars topped the Avalance 3-1.

The loss was Varlamov's first of the season and put and end to the Avalanche's three-game win streak. The Russian goaltender dropped to 3-1-0 on the season with a 1.76 goals-against average and a .944 save percentage.
Oct 14 - 11:09 PM

Semyon Varlamov will be the Avalanche's goaltender on Saturday against Dallas.

Backup Jonathan Bernier will get the nod on Friday against his old team, the Anaheim Ducks. Varlamov has a 1.67 GAA and .945 save percentage in three starts this season.
Oct 12 - 4:19 PM

Semyon Varlamov stopped 20 of the 23 shots he faced in Wednesday's game against the Bruins for his third victory in as many starts.

Varlamov has posted a 3-0 record with a 1.67 goals-against average and .945 save percentage over his first three starts. He is off to an outstanding start after a dismal 6-17 record and 3.38 GAA in 23 starts and one relief appearance in 2016-17. Still, he should be treated more as a low-end No. 2 backstop until the Avalanche prove they can win over the long haul.
Oct 12 - 1:29 AM

Semyon Varlamov will make his second consecutive start against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.

Varlamov shut out the Bruins earlier this week in a 4-0 victory on Monday, recording 29 saves. He is 2-0-0 to start the season with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage. While Varlamov should see the majority of his team's starts, the Avalanche aren't expected to win too many games so his fantasy value is limited.
Oct 11 - 8:43 PM

Semyon Varlamov turned aside all 29 shots he faced in a 4-0 win over Boston on Monday afternoon.

Varlamov has been outstanding at the beginning of the season. He has a 2-0-0 record along with a 1.00 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage.
Oct 9 - 4:22 PM

Semyon Varlamov will get back in the crease on Monday against Boston.

Varlamov stopped 37 of 39 shots in a 4-2 win against the New York Rangers on Thursday. Jonathan Bernier is expected to get the nod Saturday afternoon.

Oct 7 - 4:27 AM

Semyon Varlamov stopped 37 of 39 shots in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Both goals that Varlamov allowed were scored while the Avalanche were shorthanded. It's just one game, but it's something positive to build on after a disastrous 2016-17 season. Varlamov still isn't a good bet to be a strong fantasy option this season. He should probably be the third best goalie on your fantasy squad.
Oct 5 - 10:46 PM

The Colorado Avalanche will start their regular season with Semyon Varlamov in goal against the Rangers.

Varlamov is on a four year trend of his goals against average getting progressively worse. It has gone from 2.41 during the 2013-14 season, all the way to 3.38 last season. The Avalanche were the worst team in hockey last season and will need Varlamov to bounce back in a big way if they hope to avoid that distinction this season. You could do much better in goal in your fantasy lineups.

Oct 5 - 6:21 PM

Semyon Varlamov made 28 saves to lift Colorado over Minnesota in pre-season action on Sunday night.

The 29-year-old is coming off a year to forget, marred by poor play and injuries. It's too soon to proclaim Varlamov will be back to his previous form, but if the netminder is fully healed, don't expect his save percentage to hover below .900 again this season. Varlamov allowed just one puck past him in the 5-1 win.
Sep 24 - 10:14 PM

Semyon Varlamov took part in an intrasquad game on Sunday, which marks the first time in eight months that he's played.

Varlamov didn't play past Jan. 17 due to issues with both hips that resulted in two surgeries spaced out over four weeks. He stopped just 23 of 28 shots in the intrasquad game, but the main thing is he felt physically good. "I'm not even tired, so conditioning is good," he said. "I just need to get back into game shape. I feel good in practices and it's time to play in the real games. I was very excited, actually, even though we were playing against each other, a friendly game. It's exciting to be at the rink like this. This was for me a real game."

Sep 17 - 6:27 PM

Semyon Varlamov is feeling healthy going into the 2017-18 season.

Varlamov had surgery on his right and left hip four weeks apart (one in January, one in February), but he says he's feeling comfortable going into the upcoming season. "At the beginning when I started skating, I was pretty uncomfortable. The surgeries were kind of tough; you have to learn again how to skate," Varlamov said. "But I feel confident about it now. I’m sure all the injuries are behind me and I’m looking forward to have a really good, solid, healthy season. It’s been a tough stretch for me, the last six months. Lots of rehab going on. But I’m blessed to have a really good team — doctors and physical therapists who work with me. They’ve done a tremendous job for me. I feel good on the ice." Varlamov will be the starting goaltender in Colorado this season, but don't expect him to carry much fantasy value.

Sep 10 - 10:47 AM

Semyon Varlamov is healthy going into the 2017-18 campaign.

Varlamov was limited to 24 games last season due to two hip surgeries. That's behind him though and he's been skating since mid-July. He'll be looking to bounce back this season as in addition to his limited playing time, he also struggled when available with a 3.38 GAA and .898 save percentage.
Sep 6 - 3:27 PM

Semyon Varlamov's recovery from two hip surgeries is going well.

"It’s been two months after the first surgery and six weeks after the second one, so I feel good," Varlamov said. He remains very confident that he'll be 100% in time for training camp. He had a 3.38 GAA and .898 save percentage in 24 contests this season.
