Semyon Varlamov will be the Colorado Avalanche's starting goaltender on Saturday.
Varlamov has a 2.67 GAA and .916 save percentage in three games this season. After this game, Colorado will get nearly a week off, but then its schedule will tighten with six games in 10 days. So it wouldn't be surprising to see Calvin Pickard get two starts over that stretch. Oct 21 - 3:57 PM

Semyon Varlamov turned aside all 27 shots he faced in Colorado's 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Varlamov entered the game having allowed eight goals in his first two outings, but he turned in his best performance of the young season tonight. The Avs goalie has a 2-1-0 record with a 2.67 goals-against-average and a .916 save percentage in 2016-17. Colorado has looked much better under new head coach Jared Bedner, which means that Varlamov's fantasy stock could be on the rise.
Oct 20 - 11:26 PM

Semyon Varlamov will start for the Colorado Avalanche Thursday night.

Varlamov has a 4.00 GAA and .882 save percentage in two games this season. He'll be up against the Tampa Bay Lightning, who he's traditionally played well against as he has a career 8-3-2 record, 2.32 GAA, and .924 save percentage in 14 games against them.
Oct 20 - 1:57 PM

Semyon Varlamov allowed three goals on 40 shots in Tuesday's 3-0 loss to Washington.

Varlamov's former team got the better of him tonight. Two of the three goals Varlamov allowed were scored on the power play. He falls to 1-1-0 on the season and has now given up eight goals in two starts.
Oct 18 - 10:20 PM

Semyon Varlamov will face the Capitals on Tuesday night.

Varlamov got the win, but only stopped 23 of 28 shots against Dallas on Saturday. The veteran netminder has been stingy against his original club, allowing just seven goals in four games. You still may wish to find a more favorable matchup however.
Oct 16 - 12:25 PM

It wasn't pretty, but Semyon Varlamov and the Colorado Avalanche won their season-opener to the tune of a 6-5 decision against the dangerous Dallas Stars.

Varlamov stopped 23 out of 28 shots to grab his first victory of 2016-17. Varly owners shouldn't worry too much yet, as the Stars are the sort of team taht can light up the scoreboard every night. In fact, limiting Dallas to 28 SOG is reasonably promising.
Oct 16 - 12:18 AM

Semyon Varlamov will face Dallas on Saturday night.

Varlamov has fared well in his career against the Stars. He's posted an 11-3-2 record with a .913 save percentage and a 2.86 GAA in 16 career games. With Antti Niemi in the other net, the ice may be tilted the Avs' way.
Oct 15 - 2:46 PM

Semyon Varlamov is looking to have a rebound year after last year's disappointing season.

Varlamov struggled to find any kind of consistency last season, but head coach Jared Bednar believes his starting goalie will find his game in 2016-17. "I think he’s an excellent goaltender and he’s proven it in the past," Bednar said of Varlamov. "I know he’s hungry to rebound, like a lot of these guys are, and has something to prove." If Varlamov continues to struggle, expect backup goalie Calvin Pickard to get an increased workload.

Oct 15 - 10:08 AM

Semyon Varlamov will start in Colorado's season opener on Saturday.

Varlamov is going into the season as the Avalanche's No. 1 goalie, but Calvin Pickard should challenge for that role as the season progresses. In the end, it wouldn't be surprising if the two goalies end up splitting the goaltending duties fairly evenly this season.
Oct 13 - 6:26 PM

If preseason work means anything, then the Colorado Avalanche should be heartened by Semyon Varlamov's exhibition run.

He looked sharp on Saturday, stopping 26 out of 27 shots as the Avs beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 (OT). The coaching change could very well make Varlamov's life easier, so he's an interesting gamble.
Oct 9 - 9:29 AM

Semyon Varlamov blocked 30 shots in the 2-0 victory by the Colorado Avalanche over the Minnesota Wild.

Varlamov skipped the World Cup with a lower body injury and did not want to play until he was 100%. Notably, that is how he ended the night with a 1.000 save percentage. He had a .914 last year with the Avalanche.
Oct 4 - 11:56 PM

Semyon Varlamov will take the crease on Tuesday, plus one more before the pre-season is through.

Varlamov is looking for a bounce-back season now that he's "100%" and skipping the World Cup due to a lower body injury. With the coaching change to boot, the talented netminder's fantasy potential is on the rise.
Oct 3 - 3:06 PM

Semyon Varlamov confirmed on Sunday that he skipped the 2016 World Championship because of a lower-body injury.

"I worked a lot in the summertime to take care of this small injury and I feel great right now, ready to play 100 percent," he said. Varlamov didn't see any action during the World Cup of Hockey, but he looked good in his preseason win over Los Angeles last week and is ready to bounce back with the Avalanche this year. He will have to be at his best to avoid losing playing time to Calvin Pickard.

Oct 3 - 10:49 AM

Semyon Varlamov stopped 32 of 33 shots in a 3-1 win over the Kings.

There might not be a goalie with more to prove than Varlamov this season. He is coming off a season where he posted a GAA of 2.81 and a pedestrian .914 save percentage. There were some rumblings that if he were to continue on this current path, the Avalanche would protect Calvin Pickard ahead of him during next summer's expansion draft. Varlamov remains a somewhat risky bet, but one that can pay huge dividends as we inch closer to the regular season.
Sep 30 - 11:50 PM

Semyon Varlamov stopped 33 of 34 shots in Saturday's 2-1 shootout loss to the Czech Republic.

Varlamov nearly pitched a shutout in this game, but Tomas Plekanec found the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining. Varlamov also allowed two goals on three shootout attempts. Russia and the Czech Republic have each lost one pre-tournament game.
