Colorado GM Joe Sakic expects Semyon Varlamov (groin) to be healthy and ready for next season.
"He's had the problems with his groin the last couple of years, and this year, but he's a worker, he cares, he's a guy who puts a lot of pressure on that area the way he plays," said Sakic. "We're very confident by doing this procedure, he's going to be back where he once was. I think it's going to be a lot better mentally for him, that he's not one push away from pulling his groin. I know that this year was a tough year for him mentally. In your head, it's almost, 'When's the next time it's going to pull?' By doing this, we're confident he'll be back to 100 percent and have this behind him and he can just focus on playing." Varlamov's season came to an end in late January when he underwent surgery on his hip to help repair his ailing groin. Feb 16 - 9:27 AM

Date:

The Avalanche placed Semyon Varlamov (groin) on I/R retroactively to Jan. 17th on Saturday.

The veteran netminder is out for the season with an injury that'll need surgery to repair. While this may be a blessing in disguise, it's certainly a painful and unseemly end to the season.
Feb 4 - 6:23 PM

Semyon Varlamov (groin) is done for the season.

Varlamov is expected to undergo hip surgery to repair his groin injury. This marks the end of a rough campaign for him where he posted a 3.38 GAA and .898 save percentage in 24 games. With him done, Calvin Pickard and Spencer Martin are expected to be the Avalanche's goalie options for the rest of 2016-17. Pickard will likely get the bulk of the starts, though he's slumped as well behind the struggling Avalanche.

Semyon Varlamov (groin) won't play until after the All-Star break.

Coach Jared Bednar said that Varlamov's groin injury isn't a day-to-day issue, so the team decided to shut him down for a while. The Avalanche netminder has dealt with his fair share of groin injuries throughout his career, including a few trips to the sidelines this season.
Jan 18 - 2:39 PM

Semyon Varlamov's groin issue has flared up and he'll miss Wednesday's practice as a result.

Colorado doesn't play until Thursday, so it's possible that Varlamov will still be available for that game. That being said, it wouldn't be surprising if he's held out of at least that contest. He's played in three games since returning from a groin injury.
Jan 18 - 1:16 PM

Semyon Varlamov barely broke the .800 marks in a 6-4 loss to the Blackhawks Tuesday night.

Varlamov gave up five goals as he faced only 26 shots to give him a save percentage of .808. One more went into an empty net. As disappointing as that was, it is not his worst outing in a current five-game losing streak; he gave up five goals on only 18 shots against the Maple Leafs December 22.
Jan 18 - 12:29 AM

Semyon Varlamov will play between the pipes on Tuesday.

Varlamov is trying to end a four-game losing streak that dates back to before his groin injury. He has a 3.31 GAA and .901 save percentage in 23 contests in 2016-17.
Jan 16 - 6:23 PM

Semyon Varlamov dropped another game, 3-2 to Nashville on Saturday.

Mark it four losses in a row now with 13 goals against in that span. Today he turned away 26 of 29 shots and even had a 2-0 lead early in the game. And so it goes for Colorado.
Jan 14 - 6:05 PM

Semyon Varlamov will play between the pipes on Saturday.

Varlamov made his return from a groin injury on Thursday and turned aside 28 of 31 shots. He has a 3.32 GAA and .901 save percentage in 21 games this season.
Jan 13 - 4:19 PM

Semyon Varlamov allowed three goals on 31 shots to the Ducks in his return to action on Thursday.

It was his first start since December 22nd and was a tough match-up against Anaheim with his team struggling so much in front of him. He hasn't recorded a win since a 51 save effort against Toronto on Dec.11. He's not a must start in any match-up this season with just six wins and a 3.32 GAA to go with a .901 save percentage in 21 starts.
Jan 13 - 1:08 AM

Semyon Varlamov will be between the pipes Thursday versus Anaheim.

He has recovered from his latest groin issue and feels ready to see his first game action since Dec. 22. "Hopefully I can play the rest of the season without any small injuries again," Varlamov said. "I want to play the second half of the season strong without any issues with my health. I want to play better, just try to win games." Colorado has struggled in front of him and he hasn't looked good in the crease either. Varlamov owns a 6-14-0 record with a 3.33 GAA and a .901 save percentage.

Jan 12 - 9:07 AM

Semyon Varlamov (groin) will dress on Friday, but as the backup goaltender.

After that, Colorado will be off for roughly a week, so it will be a little while still before Varlamov gets a start. He has a 6-14-0 record, 3.33 GAA, and .901 save percentage in 21 contests.
Jan 6 - 1:59 PM

Semyon Varlamov (groin) will be available for Friday's game against the New York Islanders.

That doesn't necessarily mean that Varlamov will start in that contest, but at the least he's expected to be on the bench. He last played on Dec. 22. He has a 6-14-0 record, 3.33 GAA, and .901 save percentage in 21 contests.

Jan 5 - 3:17 PM

Semyon Varlamov (groin) isn't traveling with the Avalanche.

Varlamov obviously won't play on Monday in Vancouver and it's doubtful that he'll join the team in time for Wednesday's game in Calgary. The good news is that he has been skating on his own.

Jan 2 - 10:40 AM

Semyon Varlamov (groin) should resume skating in the next few days.

Varlamov's been out since Dec. 22nd with a groin injury, but it sounds like he's making slow progress. "We expect him back on the ice (with the team) in the next couple of days," Bednar said. "He skated a little bit yeterday on his own, and today he’s doing something different. We’re hoping in the next couple of days, he’ll be back out there. He’s feeling better, though."
