Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov had a rough outing Wednesday night as he and the Avalanche were beaten 4-3 by the Oilers in Edmonton.

The Avs sent Varlamov to their bench less than halfway through the first period. Varlamov allowed the Oilers to score on three of their first seven shots. Reto Berra replaced Varlamov and stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced. But from the life-isn't-fair department comes this: Berra was charged with the loss. He's 2-3-1 with a goals-against average of 3.21 and a save percentage of 8.97. Varlamov is 25-18-8 with a .920 save percentage and a 2.57 GAA. He's ordinarily far more dependable than he was against the Oilers, and his shaky performance hurt the Avs' chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
Mar 25 - 11:25 PM

Semyon Varlamov will start Wednesday's game against Edmonton and Thursday's contest versus Vancouver.

"I'm going with Varly," coach Patrick Roy said Tuesday. "Both games. We're not going to give up. I understand that our situation does not look good, with the fact that Winnipeg and Minnesota are winning their games. But at the same time as a coaching staff and the players, we feel that we believe in ourselves." Varlamov has started 51 games this season and that total likely would've been higher if he didn't have to deal with an ailing groin.

The only Coyote to beat him was Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who opened the scoring just 3:24 into the game with a perfect shot. And again midway through the third, making it 3-2 Avalanche. This time, Ekman-Larsson scored off a double-tap, both mid-air, and the second coming while Ekman-Larsson reached back against his momentum. Other than that, Varlamov was on-point all night long. This should come as no surprise as Avalanche coach Patrick Roy does not trust Reto Berra very much and will wait for optimum games to start him. Varlamov is coming off a 2-1 shootout win over New Jersey in which he stopped 23 shots.
