Varlamov was very busy in this game and showed us why he was in the running for the Vezina trophy last year. He will be playing a little less to the end of the season as the Avs have been eliminated from playoff contention and he certainly is a bit burned out.

With the playoffs no longer a real possibility, Colorado coach Patrick Roy will go to a two-goalie system.

He no longer needs to burn out Semyon Varlamov. As a result, Roy mapped out the rest of the starts this season. Varlamov will start Saturday against the Kings, Tuesday against the Predators and next Saturday against Chicago. Reto Berra will start Friday against the Ducks and next Thursday against the Jets. Nice of him to do that for us poolies.

Mar 28 - 12:36 PM

Colorado goalie Semyon Varlamov had a rough outing Wednesday night as he and the Avalanche were beaten 4-3 by the Oilers in Edmonton.

The Avs sent Varlamov to their bench less than halfway through the first period. Varlamov allowed the Oilers to score on three of their first seven shots. Reto Berra replaced Varlamov and stopped 26 of the 27 shots he faced. But from the life-isn't-fair department comes this: Berra was charged with the loss. He's 2-3-1 with a goals-against average of 3.21 and a save percentage of 8.97. Varlamov is 25-18-8 with a .920 save percentage and a 2.57 GAA. He's ordinarily far more dependable than he was against the Oilers, and his shaky performance hurt the Avs' chances of qualifying for the playoffs.
