Leland Irving's time with the Calgary Flames is likely done.
Irving is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent, and the Flames have given little indication that they feel he's part of their future plans. He had a 3.33 GAA and .883 save percentage in six games this season. Irving's agent Ritch Winter naturally sang his client's praises, both saying that Irving will become a solid number one goaltender in the NHL and would like to re-sign with Calgary. Perhaps Irving will eventually become a good number one goaltender, but we don't have high short-term expectations for him. However, that could change if he signs with a team that lacks major competition. May 10 - 9:08 AM

Leland Irving has been sent down to the minors by the Calgary Flames.

When Miikka Kiprusoff got injured, it looked like it would be a key opportunity for Irving. Unfortunately it hasn't worked out and the Flames ultimately claimed Joey MacDonald off of waivers, who has passed Irving on the depth charts.

Leland Irving didn't receive too much of the blame following Calgary's 5-2 loss on Friday.

Irving allowed two goals on just four shots in 4:07 minutes of playing time before Joey MacDonald replaced him. "We shouldn’t even be talking about our goalies tonight. We just didn’t give them a chance," said Flames head coach Bob Hartley. "We handed them the game. A couple of bad turnovers in the first period in our zone, giveaways, and that’s a team simply too deep in talent to give them point-blank shots. We fought back, but the damage was done." All the same, for a guy fighting to stay with the Flames bonce Miikka Kiprusoff is healthy, Irving didn't do anything to advance his cause on Friday.

Leland Irving saved 30 of 34 shots in a 7-4 victory Wednesday night.

Two of the four goals Irving surrendered were scored when the Flames were attempting to kill a penalty. Irving now has a 2.93 GAA and .895 save percentage in five games this season.
Feb 14 - 8:34 AM

Look for Leland Irving to be between the pipes for Calgary Wednesday night.

Irving has filled in admirably for injured No. 1 goalie Miikka Kiprusoff and new addition Joey MacDonald hasn't played yet this season since recovering from a back injury. Coach Bob Hartley also commented that the team was "going to keep riding Leland" while Kiprusoff is out.
Feb 13 - 2:25 PM

Coach Bob Hartley was pleased with the effort of goaltender Leland Irving on Monday.

The Flames dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to the Wild but it was not Irving's fault. "His performance was great," Hartley said. "In Detroit. In Columbus. Even in Vancouver there's no way we can even think of faulting Irving for any of those goals. And tonight he did his job. He was strong. You could tell that he had good focus; he could see the puck, his tracking was very good. And he gave us the chance to win." The Flames claimed Joey MacDonald on waivers earlier Monday and you have to wonder if Irving is on his way down to the minors once Miikka Kiprusoff returns or is Kipper more seriously injured than previously start. Stay tuned.
Feb 12 - 6:08 AM

Leland Irving made 23 saves in the Flames 2-1 shootout loss to the Minnesota Wild.

Irving gave up eight goals in his last two games, forcing the Flames in claiming veteran Joey MacDonald as an insurance policy. Irving needs more starts like these just to stay in the NHL or else he will be heading back to the AHL for good.
Feb 12 - 1:47 AM

Leland Irving will still start on Monday despite the fact that Calgary has claimed Joey MacDonald off of waivers.

This might be Irving's last start in the NHL for quite a while now that MacDonald is also on the team. That might motivate Irving to put up quite the performance or it might just be a distraction.
Feb 11 - 1:23 PM

Leland Irving is expected to get the start in goal for Calgary on Monday.

Irving is the number one netminder in Calgary these days with Miikka Kiprusoff out with a knee injury. He played well on Saturday despite giving up five goals to the Canucks on 31 shots but his effort kept the game relatively close. He is currently 1-1 with a 3.40 GAA and has given up eight goals on 66 shots for a .879 save percentage.
Feb 11 - 1:12 AM

Leland Irving played a strong game for the Flames on Saturday despite suffering a 5-1 defeat at the hands of the Canucks.

"Certainly, Leland Irving kept us in the game," said Flames coach Bob Hartley. "Without him, it would have been much worse." A quick peek at the stats shows that Irving allowed five goals on 31 shots, but there's no question the score could have been significantly more lopsided had the youngster not been on his game. Although Miikka Kiprusoff was placed on I.R. with his knee injury, the Flames supporting cast makes us weary of Irving as a short-term option for all but desperate fantasy players.
Feb 10 - 10:15 AM

Leland Irving couldn't help end the Flames' struggles Saturday night as he allowed five goals on 31 shots to take the loss Saturday night against Vancouver.

Irving was given a tough task playing goal for Calgary, who own the second-worst goal differential total in the Western Conference. He might get another crack at it though if Mikka Kuprusoff isn't ready to go on Monday.
Feb 10 - 4:45 AM

Leland Irving will be back in goal for the Flames when they meet the Vancouver Canucks Saturday.

Irving blocked 26 of 29 shots on Thursday night, his first start of the season. Irving is playing while Miikka Kiprusoff, Calgary's long-time starting goalie, is out with a knee injury.
Feb 9 - 3:36 AM

Leland Irving blocked 26 of 29 shots in his first start and win of the 2013 season.

The Flames gave him the 'W' in overtime. Irving was called upon to play due to Miikka Kiprusoff's lower-body injury. Irving also picked up an assist in the game.
Feb 7 - 10:14 PM

Leland Irving is expected to start on Thursday.

Miikka Kiprusoff is dealing with a day-to-day lower body injury. It's not clear how long he'll be sidelined, but Irving will serve as the team's top goaltender for now. This is a rare opportunity for Irving, but he will probably go back to being the seldom used backup once Kiprusoff is healthy.
Feb 7 - 8:18 AM

Leland Irving was thrust into action Tuesday as Miikka Kiprusoff had to leave the Flames 4-1 win over Detroit after two periods.

Irving entered the game with a 3-1 advantage so this won't be his first NHL win, but he proved he was capable by stopping the six shots he faced in the third period. If Kiprusoff were to miss an extended stretch of play, Irving would be next in line.
