As the team captain and representative of the host city in the All-Star Game, Nick Foligno got far more league-wide attention over the weekend than he's likely accustomed to.

Foligno has been a solid player for years, but he's stepped up this season with 18 goals and 42 points in 44 contests. For some hockey fans outside of Columbus, this was essentially their introduction to him despite the fact that he's played in 510 career games. "I was nervous, for sure," Foligno said of playing such a central role in this year's All-Star weekend. "My first time being an All-Star, first time really being around these guys, you just want to — being honest here — fly under the radar and feel it out as you go. I just decided that I was going to embrace this. I really enjoyed every minute. I can't tell you how humbled I am and so excited to be around everybody. I had a blast with it all." He also had a goal and an assist in the All-Star Game.

Team Foligno won the Breakaway Challenge in style, improving their lead over Team Toews to 6-0.

Perhaps the two highlights of the event for Team Foligno were Alex Ovechkin's three attempts (on a single go) at the alley-oop baseball-style strike with a flip from Vladamir Tarasenko, and using Roberto Luongo's stick as a bat. Unfortunately, Ovie struckout. Ryan Johansen however won the crowd over, receiving the most votes by the fans, for bringing a young fan onto the ice to score on one of his attempts as well as donning an Ohio State football jersey during another.

Nick Foligno, Ryan Johansen and Sergei Bobrovsky were named to the All-Star game on Saturday.

Wow! Three members of the Blue Jackets, a non-playoff team, are named. You would think the game was being played in Columbus. Oh wait. It is. Only the Blackhawks are sending more players to the game and all five were voted in by the fans. "I’m absolutely thrilled to be part of this," Foligno said. "And it’s even more special to have it in the city where I get to play. I’m excited for the fans here. It should be a blast. I know it’s going to be something I remember for the rest of my life."

Foligno recently signed a six-year, $33 million contract extension and to his credit that hasn't slowed him down. Jan 7 - 8:55 AM

Nick Foligno has inked a six-year, $33 million contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Foligno, who was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, is getting a substantial raise over his current $3,083,333 annual cap hit. That's not surprising given that he's broken out this season with 17 goals and 31 points in 33 contests, but it's nevertheless a significant risk. Foligno turned 27 in October and his current career-high is only 47 points. It wouldn't be shocking to see Foligno fall back to Earth and make this deal look like an overreaction. On the flip side if he can stay even close to his current level for the foreseeable future then he'll more than earn his paycheck.

Nick Foligno is set to play in his 500th career game on Wednesday.

Foligno broke into the NHL in the 2007-08 campaign and he hasn't missed a ton of playing time since then. "It's probably the point where you understand the type of player you need to be and it's all about going out and executing," Foligno said. "That's what I've been trying to do. Hopefully, that carries through the next 500." Given that he only turned 27 in October, it's entirely possible that he'll reach the 1,000-game mark too before his career is done. He has 17 goals and 31 points in 33 contests this season.
