"Quite a few general managers" have asked about the availability of Jan Hejda, according to Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic.

Hejda is a pending unrestricted free agent who carries a $3.25 million cap hit. "His name has come up and quite a few GMs have inquired about him," Sakic said. "That's something the next couple of days, if something makes sense, we'll see. ... I like Jan, we'd like to have him back, but it is something we're going to have to discuss in the next couple of days if we want to go down that path. Because he is UFA. That's why teams are inquiring." Hejda has nine points in 61 games.

It had been 88 games spread over 390 days since Jan Hejda last tasted the sweet euphoria of scoring an NHL goal when he tied Thursday's game at three.

This one will go on the personal highlight reel. As Matt Duchene and Jarome Iginla made their way into the Rangers' zone down 3-2 midway through the third period, Hejda drove the far slot, loudly called for Duchene's pass, and followed up his own blocked shot with a slick snapper. However, the Avs would still fall to the Rangers 6-3. Hejda now has eight points on the season, and also 24 career goals and 129 points in 600 games with the Avs, Blue Jackets, and Oilers.

Colorado wants to reduce the number of shots their goalies face.

The top pairing of Jan Hejda and Erik Johnson usually faces off against the best the opposition has to offer. "Definitely we have to do better," Hejda said. " ... We're definitely trying to block shots and all that stuff, and at least I feel like a good amount of these shots are from the outside from the board and easy shots for a goalie. Hopefully we are helping them a little bit. We're definitely talking about trying to have better positions against the players so they cannot shoot that much, but I feel this is not something we can fix overnight. We're trying and we're trying to get better." Johnson leads the team with 98 blocks and Hejda ranks second with 79. Hejda is also second on the club with 105 hits.

Jan Hejda contributed two assists in Colorado's 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose on Tuesday night.

The Avalanche defender has four helpers in 10 games this campaign, with three of them coming in his past three outings. Hejda has some value in deeper leagues that credit real-time stats (29 hits, 17 blocks), but other than that he shouldn't be on your radar.

Jan Hejda played in Colorado's opening round series against Minnesota with two broken fingers and a pin in his thumb.

He didn't have a point and posted a minus-6 rating in seven contests, as the Avalanche were bounced from the postseason in the first round. Hejda has one year remaining on his current contract.

Jan Hejda, who had such a great first half of the 2013-14 season, is not a sure bet to return to Denver for the 2014-15 campaign.

He slumped badly in the second half and the Avs have a number of young defensemen who are chomping at the bit to make the team next season, including Stefan Elliott, Duncan Siemens and Chris Bigras.

Jan Hejda suffered an upper-body injury in Sunday's regular season finale.

He was hurt in the second period and didn't return after logging 14:47 of ice time. Coach Patrick Roy wasn't sure about the defenseman's status following the contest, so his availability for Game 1 of the playoffs against Minnesota should be considered questionable at this time.

He has missed the last week or so with a sprained knee. Hejda has arguably been the Avs' best defenseman this season. Feel free to start him Saturday if you need a d-man.

Depending on how he feels, there's a chance that Jan Hejda could return from his knee injury by this weekend.

He might be able to resume skating this week, which could lead to an early return from an injury that looked much worse when it happened. Hejda has missed two games after he was hurt last Thursday against Edmonton.
