The Lake Erie Monsters have signed former Blue Jackets defenseman Jan Hejda to an AHL tryout contract.
"Jan was looking for an opportunity to play and we're excited to provide that and in the process add a proven, veteran defenseman to our young blueline in Lake Erie," said Columbus assistant GM and Lake Erie GM Bill Zito. Hejda played 81 games with Colorado last season and he posted 13 points while averaging more than 20 minutes of ice time per game. Mon, Dec 7, 2015 12:49:00 PM

Look for Jan Hejda to sign a professional tryout contract with the Lake Erie Monsters on Sunday.

The Blue Jackets AHL affiliate just signed veteran Manny Malhotra to a similar deal. Hejda had a training camp PTO with the Blackhawks before being released and now the former Jacket who played from 2007-11 in the Ohio capital, had played the last four seasons with Colorado before becoming a UFA in the off-season.

The Chicago Blackhawks handed defenseman Jan Hejda a professional tryout contract, according to the Columbus Dispatch's Aaron Portzline.

Hejda, 37, isn't a fantasy factor on his own. On the other hand, he could potentially provide support as a depth defenseman, which isn't irrelevant as Chicago leaned heavily on its top four (especially during the playoffs) in 2014-15.

The Colorado Avalanche are unlikely to re-sign pending unrestricted free-agent Jan Hejda.

The 36-year-old had one goal, 13 points and minus-12 rating in 81 games with the Avalanche last year. Colorado will likely look to bring in at least one defenseman via free agency, which opens on July 1st.

Jan Hejda will play for the Czech Republic at the World Championship.

He will probably be testing the market as a unrestricted free agent in the summer, but before that he will serve as an alternate captain of the host country. In 81 games this past season for the Avalanche, he posted 13 points, 170 hits, 140 blocks and a minus-12 rating.

"Quite a few general managers" have asked about the availability of Jan Hejda, according to Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic.

Hejda is a pending unrestricted free agent who carries a $3.25 million cap hit. "His name has come up and quite a few GMs have inquired about him," Sakic said. "That's something the next couple of days, if something makes sense, we'll see. ... I like Jan, we'd like to have him back, but it is something we're going to have to discuss in the next couple of days if we want to go down that path. Because he is UFA. That's why teams are inquiring." Hejda has nine points in 61 games.

It had been 88 games spread over 390 days since Jan Hejda last tasted the sweet euphoria of scoring an NHL goal when he tied Thursday's game at three.

This one will go on the personal highlight reel. As Matt Duchene and Jarome Iginla made their way into the Rangers' zone down 3-2 midway through the third period, Hejda drove the far slot, loudly called for Duchene's pass, and followed up his own blocked shot with a slick snapper. However, the Avs would still fall to the Rangers 6-3. Hejda now has eight points on the season, and also 24 career goals and 129 points in 600 games with the Avs, Blue Jackets, and Oilers.

Colorado wants to reduce the number of shots their goalies face.

The top pairing of Jan Hejda and Erik Johnson usually faces off against the best the opposition has to offer. "Definitely we have to do better," Hejda said. " ... We're definitely trying to block shots and all that stuff, and at least I feel like a good amount of these shots are from the outside from the board and easy shots for a goalie. Hopefully we are helping them a little bit. We're definitely talking about trying to have better positions against the players so they cannot shoot that much, but I feel this is not something we can fix overnight. We're trying and we're trying to get better." Johnson leads the team with 98 blocks and Hejda ranks second with 79. Hejda is also second on the club with 105 hits.

Jan Hejda contributed two assists in Colorado's 3-2 shootout loss to San Jose on Tuesday night.

The Avalanche defender has four helpers in 10 games this campaign, with three of them coming in his past three outings. Hejda has some value in deeper leagues that credit real-time stats (29 hits, 17 blocks), but other than that he shouldn't be on your radar.

Jan Hejda played in Colorado's opening round series against Minnesota with two broken fingers and a pin in his thumb.

He didn't have a point and posted a minus-6 rating in seven contests, as the Avalanche were bounced from the postseason in the first round. Hejda has one year remaining on his current contract.

Jan Hejda, who had such a great first half of the 2013-14 season, is not a sure bet to return to Denver for the 2014-15 campaign.

He slumped badly in the second half and the Avs have a number of young defensemen who are chomping at the bit to make the team next season, including Stefan Elliott, Duncan Siemens and Chris Bigras.
