Jan Hejda, who had such a great first half of the 2013-14 season, is not a sure bet to return to Denver for the 2014-15 campaign.

He slumped badly in the second half and the Avs have a number of young defensemen who are chomping at the bit to make the team next season, including Stefan Elliott, Duncan Siemens and Chris Bigras.

Jan Hejda suffered an upper-body injury in Sunday's regular season finale.

He was hurt in the second period and didn't return after logging 14:47 of ice time. Coach Patrick Roy wasn't sure about the defenseman's status following the contest, so his availability for Game 1 of the playoffs against Minnesota should be considered questionable at this time.

Jan Hejda will be back in the Colorado lineup against Minnesota Saturday night.

He has missed the last week or so with a sprained knee. Hejda has arguably been the Avs' best defenseman this season. Feel free to start him Saturday if you need a d-man.

Depending on how he feels, there's a chance that Jan Hejda could return from his knee injury by this weekend.

He might be able to resume skating this week, which could lead to an early return from an injury that looked much worse when it happened. Hejda has missed two games after he was hurt last Thursday against Edmonton.

Jan Hejda has been an unsung hero for Colorado early into the 2013-14 campaign.

He had a minus-17 rating, which was the worst on the team, in his first season with the Avalanche in 2011-12 and now he leads the club and stands third in the league with a plus-16 rating. "Confidence is a huge part of winning and we all have confidence right now," Hejda said. "Goalies, defensemen and forwards — everybody can see it." He also has five points, 42 hits and 33 blocked shots in 16 games.

Defenseman Jan Hejda said on Monday that the Colorado Avalanche have lost their confidence.

It happened in the game against Edmonton and the Avs are on a four game losing streak starting with that game. "Everything starts with that loss to Edmonton. We lost confidence. Everybody is trying (not) to make a mistake," Hejda said. "D-zone coverage, we have no rhythm right now ... Four games in a row we've allowed four, five, six goals against. Not acceptable. I don't know. We have to simplify it, probably."
