The 2012-13 season had been unpleasant and disheartening for center Blair Jones.

A dozen games in, Calgary coach Bob Hartley soured on Jones — chucking him on waivers and banishing him to the farm — and that was basically it. But he was recalled on Friday and Hartley said he expects production from Blair now that he has improved his conditioning and attitude." He improved his play in the AHL, too. In 21 games last season with the Abbotsford Heat last season, Blair had seven points. In 16 games this season, 20 points. "The message I (gave) myself was, ‘Don’t go and sulk. It’s not going to do you any good. Just go and work hard,’ " said Jones. "I feel confident and comfortable. I want the puck, just hanging onto it and making plays. It’s fun to have your confidence build and to get some of the swagger back. It’s a good feeling."

Blair Jones has been making an impression with his gritty performance in training camp.

"Jonesy's playing with desperation," said assistant coach Martin Gelinas. "He's not the only guy. There are lot of guys battling for jobs here and you've got to find a way to get yourself noticed. A guy like Jonesey, he's not going to score a lot. So he has to find other ways to contribute and that means being physical, being in people's faces. That's how he's going to make his mark. We'll see where this goes. We're not even one week into it. But at the same time, he's trying to do the right thing." Jones had an assist in 15 games with the Calgary Flames before being placed on waivers and being sent to the minors once he cleared. Despite his setback last season, he still has a decent shot of making the 2013-14 squad.

Blair Jones will get back into Calgary's lineup Wednesday night after being called up from the minors on Tuesday.

He was originally assigned to AHL Abbotsford on Feb. 21 after skating in 11 games with the Flames. Coach Bob Hartley wants Jones to be active in the forecheck and be "an up-and-down player."

Blair Jones successfully clears waivers.

Jones is still on the Calgary Flames' active roster, but he might be sent down soon. "Maybe it can serve as motivation or a wakeup call or a little extra juice to get you to work that much harder at being a better player," Jones suggested. He was a healthy scratch on Sunday.

Blair Jones has been placed on waivers by the Calgary Flames.

Jones has an assist and six penalty minutes in 11 games this season. Even if another team claims him, he won't have any fantasy value in standard leagues in 2013.

Blair Jones and defenseman T.J. Brodie could make their season debuts on Monday night.

They watched Sunday's game from the press box, but may play against Anaheim. Coach Bob Hartley wouldn't acknowledge personnel changes, but he did say that switching bodies in and out will probably be a common practice during the shortened schedule to keep players fresher.

Blair Jones knows that even though the lockout talks seem to be going well right now, that doesn't necessarily mean that a new CBA is imminent.

"I've had my hopes up a few times, so I'm just waiting to see what the final result will be this time around," Jones said. "It's hard to judge from outside the negotiating room. I hear what everyone says, but I try not to get too high or too low. There's still work to be done. When and if it happens, I'll be ready. For now, though, I'm not going to rush to any conclusions. It's, 'Give me the news when it's ready to go.'" The two sides had a marathon negotiating session on Wednesday. If they can agree to a new CBA in the near future then the season could start in late December or early January.

Blair Jones would be starting his first one-way contract now if it wasn't for the lockout.

Jones has spent years bouncing between the AHL and NHL, but he seemed poised to finally earn a permanent spot with the Calgary Flames. Unfortunately that will have to wait now. "It's a bit frustrating in that regard," said Jones. "Hopefully, the sides can meet and get the wheels in motion. I like to be pretty optimistic. All the guys here want to be playing. We just want it to be fair. If it takes a bit of time, so be it." How much time remains to be seen. The union and league have been meeting regularly, but have largely avoided the core economic issues that divide them.
