Matt Moulson has seven assists in three games since being sent to AHL Ontario.
Moulson was sent to the minors after failing to record a single point in 14 games with Buffalo. His strong start in the AHL though is encouraging. "You look at his start down in the AHL already, hopefully this jump-starts him getting back into the National Hockey League," Sabres GM Jason Botterill said. Buffalo would ideally like to trade him, but that will be difficult given that he's signed to a five-year, $25 million contract that runs through 2018-19. Fri, Dec 15, 2017 03:37:00 PM

Buffalo has loaned Matt Moulson to the Ontario Reign of the AHL.

Moulson cleared waivers on Tuesday and will join Los Angeles' AHL affiliate. "Matt has been a true professional, especially during this difficult decision," Sabres GM Jason Botterill said. "Matt has previously spent time within the Kings organization early in his career and we felt this would be the best opportunity for him. From an organizational standpoint, we felt that with our young forwards in place in Rochester, we did not want to take away from their development and ice time by adding another veteran player at this time."

Matt Moulson got back in the lineup Tuesday night.

Moulson served as a healthy scratch for six straight games and 10 of the previous 14 contest before he played against Tampa Bay. He played on the fourth line with Kyle Criscuolo and Zemgus Girgensons, but logged 3:07 of playing time on the power play. That was the second-highest total on the team behind only Ryan O'Reilly (3:42). Moulson had three shots and three hits in Buffalo's 2-0 loss.

Matt Moulson could be back in the lineup on Tuesday night.

Moulson skated alongside Kyle Criscuolo and Zemgus Girgensons during Monday's practice. He also spent time on a power-play unit with Ryan O'Reilly, Rasmus Ristolainen, Jason Pominville and Kyle Okposo. Moulson has been a healthy scratch for six straight games, but an injury to Jacob Josefson and Seth Griffith's demotion may finally give him an opportunity to play again.

Matt Moulson has already served as a healthy scratch in 10 games this season.

It's quite the change for Moulson, who was once an offensive force and as recently as last season logged 81 games. At this point his five-year, $25 million contract is looking pretty bad, especially given that he's owed another season after this one. "It's been tough," Moulson said. "I haven't played too many games in a row so it's tough to get confidence and consistency in your game. Obviously the team's struggling. I think for myself all I can really control is how hard I work. I think people that know me know I'm not a sulker. I'm going to come in and do everything I can to keep working which I think I've done a good job of. It's definitely challenging. It's hard at times. I think you a have to find things mentally to motivate you. For me it's my pride and how hard I work on the ice and off the ice and what type of person I am as well."

Matt Moulson will be a healthy scratch on Monday night when the Buffalo Sabres host the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Moulson will sit in the press box for the fifth time in seven games as the Sabres surely regret signing him to that big contract a few years ago. Moulson has yet to register a point in 12 games so far this year, and is a minus-8. The Sabres are dead last in the Eastern Conference, so it is possible Moulson can sneak his way back into the lineup eventually. Casey Nelson will be a healthy scratch as well.

With zero goals in 12 games and a healthy scratch in back-to-back games, it is fair to wonder if Matt Moulson is the worst contract awarded by the Buffalo Sabres in the Terry Pegula era.

Moulson signed a five-year $25 million contract in July of 2014. His best season since signing the deal was a 13 goals and 41 points. However, the 34-year-old forward is very useful on the power play, scoring 11 of his 14 goals last season on the man advantage. Unfortunately, his skating has dropped substantially over the years and he doesn't seem able to keep up in today's speedy NHL game in five-on-five situations. In case you were wondering, The Buffalo News ranked Ville Leino as the worst contract during the Pegula era. The Finn signed a six-year $27 million contract off the back of an impressive post-season. He went on to never record more than 25 points in a season and was bought out of his contract after the 2013-14 season. The full list can be seen by clicking on the link below.

The Buffalo Sabres have elected to scratch Matt Moulson tonight against the Carolina Hurricanes.

With zero points in 12 games this season, Moulson hasn't even come close to establishing himself as a regular. Sadly, it appears the game has gotten too fast for the 34-year-old. Casey Nelson will also be scratched tonight.
