Curtis McElhinney has become a surprise success story in the minors this season.

While playing with AHL Portland last year, McElhinney tore both groin muscles and cracked his pubic symphysis, which is a small bone that connects the two sides of the pelvis. He went through an eight-month recovery and has emerged among the top goaltenders in the AHL in 2012-13. He was originally brought in to serve as a veteran presence along with Allen York, but he has been too good to for Springfield to keep out of the lineup. He leads the league with 14 wins and five shutouts, while posting a .935 save percentage and a 2.08 GAA.

"It was difficult for the first couple of periods, but fortunately, the goal support added a little bit of confidence to my game." Teams are trying to get their rosters in order ahead of the current CBA's expiration on Saturday. However, the fear is that McElhinney would get claimed because there isn't a ton in the way of proven AHL goaltenders. Columbus' solution is to wait until the CBA expires and then ink him to an AHL-only deal.
