However, he took just five puck drops in Friday's loss to Florida, as the Ducks leaned on Ryan Kesler for 23 draws. "I think Nate Thompson would be a guy who's going to be expected to play a little more now," said coach Randy Carlyle. Thompson returned to Anaheim after participating in three AHL games. Prior to that he hadn't played at all in 2016-17. "It was good," Thompson said of the AHL stint. "I got to go down there and play a lot of hockey. I played a lot more minutes than I’m used to. Got to play in every situation. … Everything felt good. No issues." Thompson will likely serve as a fourth liner when he returns.

Apparently that's how the Ducks were able to stay under the cap while still signing RFA Hampus Lindholm to a six-year, $31.5 million. It makes sense to have Thompson on the LTIR as he might miss almost all of the 2016-17 campaign.

Anaheim GM Bob Murray indicated that Nate Thompson underwent surgery last week to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon.

"We'll be lucky if we see him before the trade deadline, to be honest with you," Murray said. "But he healed faster from the shoulder. This is a tough injury and a tough blow." Thompson missed the first 25 games of the 2015-16 campaign because of off-season surgery to repair two labral tears of his shoulder.

Coach Bruce Boudreau noted that Nate Thompson (lower body) will not join the Ducks during their five game road trip.

Thompson hasn't played since March 11th due to the ailment. The absence on the trip means the next time he could be available is on March 30th, when Anaheim hosts Calgary. Through 39 games this season Thompson's posted three points, 33 PIMs and blocks, along with 82 hits thus far.
