Pittsburgh Penguins winger Steve Downie leads the penalty minutes category by a wide margin with 152.
No one else has 100, as Derek Dorsett comes in second with 95. One interesting trend is that more productive players are generating PIM; five of the top 10 PIM men have 20+ points, including Downie at 21 (Dustin Byfuglien leads that pack with 31). Jan 24 - 4:57 PM

Steve Downie scored his ninth goal of the season in the Penguins' 3-2 shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

The right winger now has eight goals for the season. Downie's goal, scored at 12:22 of the second period, tied the game at 2-2. The Hawks had a 2-0 lead until Pittsburgh center Zach Sill scored his first goal at 5:21 of the second period. There were no goals in the third period. The Penguins played without forward Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang, two of their top three scorers, because of undisclosed injuries.

Steve Downie feels fine after he was elbowed by Minnesota's Ryan Suter on Tuesday night.

He said he expects to play Friday even though he left Tuesday's contest and did not return. Suter has a disciplinary hearing set for Wednesday.
Jan 14 - 3:57 PM

Steve Downie left Tuesday's game after being struck in the head by Minnesota's Ryan Suter.

The severity and nature of Downie's injury wasn't immediately apparent, although we obviously can't help but be concerned about the possibility that he might have a concussion. He previously missed time with a concussion in 2013.

Steve Downie (mumps) will make his return on Friday.

Downie was out for five straight games with the disease. Bryan Rust has been occupying a top-six spot lately, but that might change with Downie's return. Downie has 17 points and 135 penalty minutes in 37 contests in 2014-15.
Jan 2 - 12:14 PM

Steve Downie is close to returning to the mumps.

Downie might even be available on Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He's been a great guy to own in standard leagues as he has 17 points and 135 penalty minutes in 37 contests.
Jan 2 - 10:11 AM

Steve Downie (mumps) took part in Wednesday's optional morning skate.

He has missed five games due to the mumps, but he's almost ready to return. "He's close now," coach Mike Johnston said. "He's cleared from the mumps. That's a long time off the ice. He's got to get back with the team on the ice. I would expect a couple of more days for [Downie]." Downie needs to get his conditioning back up before he can resume playing.
Jan 1 - 5:45 PM

Steve Downie has the mumps.

Downie hasn't played since Dec. 20 and it's not clear how much more time he'll miss due to the disease. For now he'll remain in isolation from the team. In the meantime, the mixture of injuries and sick players in Pittsburgh might lead to Bryan Rust continuing to receive ice time on a line with Sidney Crosby.

Steve Downie is being examined for the mumps.

The Penguins play in Florida on Monday night against the Panthers, but Downie has returned to Pittsburgh to undergo testing along with teammates Brandon Sutter and Thomas Greiss. Downie leads the league with 135 penalty minutes and he's contributed 17 points in 32 games. Look elsewhere for your minutes in the sin bin for the time being.

Steve Downie scored a goal and added an assist in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 4-2 triumph over the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning Monday night.

Downie's goal, scored on a Pittsburgh power play late in the second period, was his fifth of the season. His assist was his 10th. Also notching goals for the Pens were Brandon Sutter, with his seventh of the season, Bryan Rust, with his first, and Brian Dumoulin, also his first.

Steve Downie played on the top line with Sidney Crosby on Monday.

Downie got that opportunity because the Penguins were missing Chris Kunitz, Beau Bennett, Patric Hornqvist, and Pascal Dupuis. Downie responded well with a goal and an assist, but we wouldn't get too excited yet. Hornqvist might return on Friday and Downie is expected to slip in the depth charts if that happens.

Steve Downie had a goal and an assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Monday.

Downie went eight games without recording a point. He has four goals, eight assists, and 83 penalty minutes in 27 contests in 2014-15.

Steve Downie was held pointless for the seventh straight game on Thursday night as he and the rest of his teammates were held scoreless by the Vancouver Canucks.

Downie occasionally will have spurts of fantasy worth when he gets big penalty minutes, which happens every few games. The 27-year-old is inconsistent with three goals and 10 points in 25 games to go with 83 penalty minutes.
Thu, Dec 4, 2014 10:02:00 PM

Steve Downie has been taking too many penalties for Penguins coach Mike Johnston's liking.

Downie leads the NHL with 79 penalty minutes and 17 minors. "We talked about that last week," Johnston said. "We talked to [Downie] about cutting down in that area, for sure. Especially the minor penalties. If you're engaging — if there's a fight or something like that — that's different. But the minor penalties, we've got to cut down." It doesn't seem realistic for Downie to maintain his current pace of roughly four penalty minutes per game, but as long as he's getting regular minutes with Pittsburgh, he's likely to spend a fair amount of time in the sin bin.
Mon, Nov 24, 2014 09:11:00 AM

Steve Downie picked up 17 penalty minutes Saturday.

Downie got into a fight with Travis Hamonic in the first period and then blindsided Thomas Hickey in the third, taking an interference penalty and a ten-minute misconduct. He leads the NHL with 79 minutes but is certainly chipping in offensively with three goals and 10 points in 19 games. He is a must start in pools that use penalty minutes as a category.
