Steve Downie will undergo season-ending knee surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The Avalanche made the announcement on Wednesday after the rugged forward was injured on Tuesday night in a game against Los Angeles. Downie had one assist and six penalty minutes in two games before his 2013 season came to a premature end. He is a solid source of penalty minutes and he can chip in offensively. Start looking elsewhere for a replacement for your fantasy squad if you picked him.

Steve Downie is up to seven points in four games with Colorado.

The Avalanche acquired Downie from Tampa Bay. Obviously, we don't expect him to maintain anything close to that point-per-game pace, but even when the dust settles, the trade should prove to be to his benefit. He's getting decent minutes while playing on a team that's fighting for a playoff spot. He'll slow down, but he'll still finish the season on a high note.

Steve Downie has made a huge impact with the Avalanche since he was acquired from the Lightning last week.

The Avs' are 3-0 with Downie, who has registered five points and is a plus five since joining the club. He is flying on a line with rookie Gabriel Landeskog and Ryan O'Reilly. If for some reason Downie can be obtained on the cheap, do so. He is a good bet for the rest of the season.
