Steve Downie has been taking too many penalties for Penguins coach Mike Johnston's liking.
Downie leads the NHL with 79 penalty minutes and 17 minors. "We talked about that last week," Johnston said. "We talked to [Downie] about cutting down in that area, for sure. Especially the minor penalties. If you're engaging — if there's a fight or something like that — that's different. But the minor penalties, we've got to cut down." It doesn't seem realistic for Downie to maintain his current pace of roughly four penalty minutes per game, but as long as he's getting regular minutes with Pittsburgh, he's likely to spend a fair amount of time in the sin bin. Steve Downie picked up 17 penalty minutes Saturday.

Downie got into a fight with Travis Hamonic in the first period and then blindsided Thomas Hickey in the third, taking an interference penalty and a ten-minute misconduct. He leads the NHL with 79 minutes but is certainly chipping in offensively with three goals and 10 points in 19 games. He is a must start in pools that use penalty minutes as a category.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been happy with Steve Downie so far.

Downie accumulated 13 penalty minutes on Saturday, bring him up to 15 in four games this season. Regardless, Penguins coach Mike Johnston praised him for his "outstanding" discipline and added that Pittsburgh is willing to kill off "the odd penalty" in exchange for his physical nature. He seems to be popular with his teammates as well and has lived up to his promise of standing up for the Penguins' stars.
Oct 20 - 9:54 AM

Steve Downie feels that part of his job with the Pittsburgh Penguins will be protecting Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

"I can guarantee there won't be any liberties on those players this year," Downie said. Downie is capable of contributing offensively, but he definitely plays an aggressive, physical game that results in him spending a lot of time in the sin bin. He might end up serving on the Penguins' third-line, but it wouldn't be shocking to see him end up skating alongside Crosby and Malkin a fair amount of the time.
Jul 7 - 5:55 PM

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Steve Downie to a one-year, $1 million contract.

Downie is a pretty good signing at that price. He's been slowed by injuries in recent years, but when he's healthy, he's a gritty forward that can chip in offensively. He'll probably end up on the Penguins' third line, but there's an outside chance that he will find his way onto one of Pittsburgh's top two lines and his fantasy value will go up significantly if that happens.
Jul 2 - 12:44 PM

Steve Downie is scheduled to undergo ear surgery on Wednesday.

Downie already had a procedure on his other ear to deal with balance problems and hearing loss. He had 24 points and 106 penalty minutes in 62 contests in 2013-14.

Steve Downie (upper body) is officially out "indefinitely" as opposed to day-to-day.

It's believed that Downie's upper-body injury is actually a concussion. He previously suffered one in November and Frank Seravalli's sources believe that his current symptoms stem from that injury. If that's the case, then Downie played through the head injury for the better part of the season, which would be a troubling and disturbing revelation to say the least.
Apr 22 - 1:11 PM

Steve Downie will not play in Game 2 Sunday due to an upper body injury.

Downie also missed Game 1 and has been out of the Flyers lineup since March 23. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Apr 8 - 12:13 PM

There is a possibility that Steve Downie (upper body) could play on Tuesday.

The winger has missed seven games with the upper body injury and the Flyers are down a forward as Zac Rinaldo was handed a four game suspension. If Downie is unable to go, look for Tye McGinn to get back in the lineup. Downie has four goals and 24 points in 60 games split between the Flyers and the Avalanche this season. His biggest fantasy value is his 106 penalty minutes. Stay tuned as he will likely be a game-time decision.
