The Pittsburgh Penguins have been happy with Steve Downie so far.
Downie accumulated 13 penalty minutes on Saturday, bring him up to 15 in four games this season. Regardless, Penguins coach Mike Johnston praised him for his "outstanding" discipline and added that Pittsburgh is willing to kill off "the odd penalty" in exchange for his physical nature. He seems to be popular with his teammates as well and has lived up to his promise of standing up for the Penguins' stars. Oct 20 - 9:54 AM

Steve Downie feels that part of his job with the Pittsburgh Penguins will be protecting Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

"I can guarantee there won't be any liberties on those players this year," Downie said. Downie is capable of contributing offensively, but he definitely plays an aggressive, physical game that results in him spending a lot of time in the sin bin. He might end up serving on the Penguins' third-line, but it wouldn't be shocking to see him end up skating alongside Crosby and Malkin a fair amount of the time.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed Steve Downie to a one-year, $1 million contract.

Downie is a pretty good signing at that price. He's been slowed by injuries in recent years, but when he's healthy, he's a gritty forward that can chip in offensively. He'll probably end up on the Penguins' third line, but there's an outside chance that he will find his way onto one of Pittsburgh's top two lines and his fantasy value will go up significantly if that happens.
Jul 2 - 12:44 PM

Steve Downie is scheduled to undergo ear surgery on Wednesday.

Downie already had a procedure on his other ear to deal with balance problems and hearing loss. He had 24 points and 106 penalty minutes in 62 contests in 2013-14.
May 14 - 5:59 PM

Steve Downie underwent surgery on one of his ears and he will have a procedure on the other one.

May 2 - 6:21 PM

Steve Downie (upper body) is officially out "indefinitely" as opposed to day-to-day.

It's believed that Downie's upper-body injury is actually a concussion. He previously suffered one in November and Frank Seravalli's sources believe that his current symptoms stem from that injury. If that's the case, then Downie played through the head injury for the better part of the season, which would be a troubling and disturbing revelation to say the least.
Apr 22 - 1:11 PM

Steve Downie will not play in Game 2 Sunday due to an upper body injury.

Downie also missed Game 1 and has been out of the Flyers lineup since March 23. Consider him day-to-day for now.
Apr 20 - 9:34 AM

Steve Downie is dealing with an upper-body injury.

It's not clear if it's the same problem that he attempted to return from on April 8. The Flyers are calling him day-to-day, but he wasn't able to participate in Tuesday's practice.

Apr 8 - 12:13 PM

There is a possibility that Steve Downie (upper body) could play on Tuesday.

The winger has missed seven games with the upper body injury and the Flyers are down a forward as Zac Rinaldo was handed a four game suspension. If Downie is unable to go, look for Tye McGinn to get back in the lineup. Downie has four goals and 24 points in 60 games split between the Flyers and the Avalanche this season. His biggest fantasy value is his 106 penalty minutes. Stay tuned as he will likely be a game-time decision.
Apr 8 - 10:14 AM

Steve Downie skated separately from his Philadelphia Flyers teammates on Sunday, so he might be nearing a return but won't do so today.

When healthy, Downie is a great source of PIMs and hits while also be a fairly dangerous scorer. If you're making daily add/drops, stay away (for now).
Apr 6 - 12:17 PM

Steve Downie missed his sixth straight game Thursday because of a head injury, but Flyers coach Craig Berube said that when the winger is ready, he wants him back in the lineup.

"I think he's close," Berube said. Tyler McGinn could be demoted when Downie comes back. "I think he's been fine," Berube said of McGinn. "He's skated well and been involved." McGinn was on a line Thursday with Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds. McGinn has three goals and no assists in 14 games.

Downie passed his baseline test to determine that he's not suffering from concussion symptoms anymore. He has missed five straight contests.

Downie has successfully passed a baseline test. He won't return on Tuesday, but he should be back soon.

His value is mostly in penalty minutes where he has 101 minutes this season.
