Steve Downie will be scratched from Sunday's contest with the Florida Panthers as Zach Sill fills in again.
This is the second consecutive night in which Sill has played in place of Downie, and unless Downie is nursing an injury, or Sill is getting one last work-out, it appears the veteran ruffian is in Coach Johnston's doghouse. Feb 22 - 6:11 PM

Steve Downie was made a late healthy scratch on Saturday night against the St. Louis Blues.

Steve Downie brought a smile to the faces of his fantasy owners with a solid outing in Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Washington.

Not only did the pesky forward score his 10th goal of the year, but he also racked up a plus-one rating and 14 penalty minutes in what was an otherwise dismal effort by Pittsburgh. Craig Adams and Kris Letang picked up assists on the lone Penguins goal.

The Penguins "might" have interest in getting a more experienced blueliner, and they would be willing to "sacrifice" a young defenseman, according to Sportsnet’s Damien Cox.

Cox also says that Steve Downie could be used as a trade chip to provide some more cap space. Downie has 22 points in 49 games, with 173 penalty minutes. He actually would be a decent addition for a team looking to bolster its fourth line as he’s more than just a goon.

Zach Sill will tag in for as Steve Downie was made a late scratch on Thursday night against Ottawa.

The league-leader in penalty minutes with 173 plus 77 hits through 49 games will not be available tonight. Sill however can fill in quite nicely on the Penguins' bottom line as he has 60 PIMs and 105 hits of his own through 39 games. We'll keep you posted on why Downie was scratched as it's unveiled.
Feb 12 - 7:41 PM

Pittsburgh Penguins winger Steve Downie leads the penalty minutes category by a wide margin with 152.

No one else has 100, as Derek Dorsett comes in second with 95. One interesting trend is that more productive players are generating PIM; five of the top 10 PIM men have 20+ points, including Downie at 21 (Dustin Byfuglien leads that pack with 31).
Jan 24 - 4:57 PM

Steve Downie scored his ninth goal of the season in the Penguins' 3-2 shootout loss to the Chicago Blackhawks in Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

The right winger now has eight goals for the season. Downie's goal, scored at 12:22 of the second period, tied the game at 2-2. The Hawks had a 2-0 lead until Pittsburgh center Zach Sill scored his first goal at 5:21 of the second period. There were no goals in the third period. The Penguins played without forward Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang, two of their top three scorers, because of undisclosed injuries.

Jan 14 - 3:57 PM

Steve Downie left Tuesday's game after being struck in the head by Minnesota's Ryan Suter.

The severity and nature of Downie's injury wasn't immediately apparent, although we obviously can't help but be concerned about the possibility that he might have a concussion. He previously missed time with a concussion in 2013.

Steve Downie (mumps) will make his return on Friday.

Downie was out for five straight games with the disease. Bryan Rust has been occupying a top-six spot lately, but that might change with Downie's return. Downie has 17 points and 135 penalty minutes in 37 contests in 2014-15.
Jan 2 - 12:14 PM

Steve Downie is close to returning to the mumps.

Downie might even be available on Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He's been a great guy to own in standard leagues as he has 17 points and 135 penalty minutes in 37 contests.
Jan 2 - 10:11 AM

Steve Downie (mumps) took part in Wednesday's optional morning skate.

He has missed five games due to the mumps, but he's almost ready to return. "He's close now," coach Mike Johnston said. "He's cleared from the mumps. That's a long time off the ice. He's got to get back with the team on the ice. I would expect a couple of more days for [Downie]." Downie needs to get his conditioning back up before he can resume playing.
Jan 1 - 5:45 PM

Steve Downie has the mumps.

Downie hasn't played since Dec. 20 and it's not clear how much more time he'll miss due to the disease. For now he'll remain in isolation from the team. In the meantime, the mixture of injuries and sick players in Pittsburgh might lead to Bryan Rust continuing to receive ice time on a line with Sidney Crosby.

Steve Downie is being examined for the mumps.

The Penguins play in Florida on Monday night against the Panthers, but Downie has returned to Pittsburgh to undergo testing along with teammates Brandon Sutter and Thomas Greiss. Downie leads the league with 135 penalty minutes and he's contributed 17 points in 32 games. Look elsewhere for your minutes in the sin bin for the time being.
