Alexander Edler may be dealt in the off-season.
If Edler was to be traded, it would have to happen before July 1 as his no-trade contract goes into effect at that time. The Canucks need help up front and have some nice depth on the blueline so it makes sense that Edler could be the odd man out in Vancouver. May 19 - 9:14 AM

Alexander Edler has been suspended by the IIHF for his knee-on-knee hit of Eric Staal.

Edler will be forced to miss the remainder of the 2013 World Championship for his "reckless" and "dangerous" actions. The IIHF Disciplinary Committee can choose to extend Edler's suspension if they wish, which would open the door to him missing part or all of the 2014 Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, Carolina Hurricanes fans just have to hope that Eric Staal's injury isn't as bad as it looked.

The Vancouver Province's Jason Botchford thinks that the Canucks' best bet for a "reboot" is trading Alex Edler.

Of course, this is not easy because Edler in January signed a five-year, $30 million deal, and he took less to stay with the team in order to help it bring other players in. But Botchford says Vancouver's defense is a strength, and it has a number of young players ready to play bigger roles. Edler could be a nice chip to acquire some forward help -- and help them get bigger up front. Edler's no-trade clause doesn't start until July, so the Canucks have time to gauge the market, which Botchford thinks would include the Flyers and Ducks.

Alexander Edler cited a lack of discipline from the Vancouver Canucks when talking about what went wrong in the first round.

The San Jose Sharks completed a four-game sweep of the Canucks on Tuesday. "At the end, their power play won them the series," Edler said. "We took too many penalties. Their power play scored a lot of goals, and even when they didn't score they got a lot of momentum from it. And when we did kill them, it still took a lot of energy out of us. They just have really good players on their power play." Vancouver committed 27 minor penalties over four games. To make matters worse, they had an abysmal 70.8 penalty-killing percentage.

Alexander Edler potted Vancouver's only goal in a 2-1 shootout loss against St. Louis Tuesday night.

Henrik and Daniel Sedin earned assists on his power-play marker. Edler has posted a point in three straight games. No one on the Canucks scored in the shootout.

Alexander Edler will draw back into the lineup Tuesday night after serving his two-game suspension for running over Phoenix goalie Mike Smith.

This is just a reminder to activate him if you normally would. Edler has 17 points and 27 penalty minutes in 30 games this season.
Mar 26 - 7:37 PM

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alex Edler says he never intended to collide with Phoenix goalie Mike Smith last week and defended his record as an honest player.

"Obviously I am disappointed I am suspended," Edler said after he watched the Canucks beat the Los Angeles Kings 1-0 at the Staples Center Saturday night. "I had no intention of making any contact with the goalie. I was going for the puck. The decision is made now. I have to look forward." Edler, who will complete his two-game suspension when the Canucks finish off their three-game road trip this afternoon in Denver, said he is proud of the way he has played the game. "I have been in the league for seven years and I think I have been a clean player," he said. "I haven't had a major penalty or anything."
Mar 24 - 11:44 AM

Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler has been suspended two games for charging into Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith.

The play happened during Thursday's 2-1 Vancouver victory over the Coyotes. Edler was assessed a five-minute major after running into Smith behind the net late in the second period. Smith was injured on the play and finished the period but wasn't back in net for the third. He was replaced by Jason Labarbera. Edler will miss games on Saturday at Los Angeles and Sunday at Colorado. He is eligible to return on Tuesday when the Canucks host the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Alexander Edler will have a disciplinary hearing over the phone Friday afternoon for his hit Thursday night on Phoenix goalie Mike Smith.

Edler was given a five-minute major for charging on the play and Smith didn't return for the start of the third period. The Vancouver defenseman is just starting to work his way out of a terrible slump, with five points and a plus-3 rating in his last five contests.
Mar 22 - 10:44 AM

Alexander Edler had a goal and an assist on Thursday.

That ended Edler's nine game pointless slump. He has five goals and 14 points in 26 games in 2013. Look for him to get five-to-10 points over the remainder of the season.
Mar 16 - 5:17 PM

Alexander Edler scored the lone regulation goal for the Canucks on a wrist shot in the first period in Vancouver's 2-1 shootout win over Chicago Friday night.

Edler is well on his way to a beautiful follow up of last year's 49 point season. Through 8 games he's got 7 points and is the Canuck's top defence option.
Feb 2 - 2:17 AM

The Canucks have signed Alexander Edler to a six-year extension worth $30 million.

Edler is in the final year of a four-year, $13 million contract, as he was set to be an unrestricted free agent next offseason. Starting next year, he'll become the team's highest-paid defenseman. Edler is a very good offensive blueliner, and, at 26 is only about to begin his prime years. He had 49 points in 82 games last season.

Alexander Edler (back) has been declared fit to play hockey.

Edler will now be part of the lockout and will stopped getting paid by the Canucks. He underwent back surgery in January 2011 but managed to play a full season last year, despite his back not being 100 percent. "After surgery, I don't think the back can get back to 100 per cent, but that doesn't mean you can't play at 100 percent," Edler said. "(Another) surgery would have been the last resort. I've been doing rehab and talking to doctors and it's been going the right way. Not quickly, but it's not getting worse, which is good. It's an injury that can be very frustrating because it takes a while. The next step will be to play games and unfortunately we can't do that right now. I've been doing contact in practice, but it's different in a game. And I wouldn't be cleared unless the doctors and I were confident I could handle it."

Alexander Edler continues to rehab his back but according to Jason Botchford of the Vancouver Province, surgery has not been ruled out.

Edler has had back problems throughout his NHL career and they flared up once again in September. Had there been a hockey season, Edler would still be out of action. Edler's back woes are a big concern to the Canucks as they chose not to re-sign him before the September 15 lockout. Should free agency remain the same once both sides settle, he can become a free agent after the 2012-13 season. He is a very good offensive defenseman but his long term back problems have to be a concern.

Defensemen Alex Edler and Jason Garrison skated with locked-out teammates at the University of British Columbia Sunday and that could have meant the Vancouver Canucks' duo had been cleared of respective back and groin injuries and that the NHL club was no longer paying their salaries during the labour impasse.

Not so, though. Edler and Garrison have not been cleared and were technically skating with the Thunderbirds to gain a better evaluation of their ongoing rehab since the Sept. 15 lockout. And you could technically argue that teammates Cory Schneider, Dan Hamhuis and Manny Malhotra and players' union brethren James Reimer, Jim Vandermeer, Andrew Cogliano and Rod Pelley were in the area and decided to drop into the practice. Technicalities aside, participating in an up-tempo skate with the T-Birds was the best progress news with the league on the cusp of cancelling the Winter Classic. Edler suffered a bulging disc during the 2010-11 season and underwent a microdisectomy procedure to relieve pressure. Garrison has had groin injuries.
