Karri Ramo won't play in either of Calgary's preseason games Sunday night due to a lower-body injury.
The silver lining is that Ramo was healthy enough to participate in a practice with the Flames. He's projected to start the season as Calgary's backup goaltender, but he's capable of challenging Jonas Hiller for the starting job. Sep 21 - 2:19 PM

Date:

Karri Ramo will be eligible for unrestricted free agency at the end of the 2014-15 campaign.

He'll be playing this season to earn a new contract, either with the Flames or another club. There's a chance that Ramo could be dealt prior to the trade deadline, as Calgary signed Jonas Hiller during the off-season to tend to their crease while prospects Joni Ortio, Brad Thiessen, Jon Gillies and Mason McDonald develop. Ramo will have to earn his playing time with the Flames, as Hiller is expected to carry most of the load this year.

Ramo started off the season slow, in part because he was coming off of ankle surgery, but he's improved as the campaigned progressed. It wouldn't be shocking to see him start approxiamtely 60 games in 2014-15 if he stays healthy.

Ramo has made a great impression this season while posting a 2.54 GAA and .915 save percentage in 38 games. He started off the season slow, in part because he was coming off of ankle surgery, but he's improved as the season has gone on and has a 1.72 GAA and .946 save percentage in four April games. It wouldn't be shocking to see him start in around 60 games in 2014-15 if he stays healthy.

Karri Ramo set aside 31 shots in Calgary's 4-1 triumph over the Lightning on Thursday night.

Ramo gave up the lone goal in the second period. He's the de facto number-one netminder for the Flames, but they'll certainly be in the market for an improvement there this offseason. He has a 2.61 goals-against average and .911 save percentage this year.
Apr 3 - 10:15 PM

The Calgary Flames are in Tampa Bay to play against the Lightning, the team that drafted Karri Ramo in 2004.

Ramo spent parts of three seasons in the NHL with Tampa Bay before leaving in the summer of 2009 for the KHL. He returned to North America this season and has established himself as the Flames' starting goalie. He has found memories of his time in Tampa Bay, but obviously the team is a lot different than the one he played for, so this won't be a particularly emotional game for him.
Apr 3 - 9:28 AM

Karri Ramo stopped 31 out of 36 shots against the Ottawa Senators, but Ramo and his team ended up losing out by a score of 6-3.

The 27-year-old Finn is now 14-12-4 with a .910 save percentage, 2.65 GAA and one shutout this season.
Mar 30 - 8:40 PM

Kari Ramo's 38 saves Friday night was a season high and the Flames goaltender is on a hot streak of sorts.

The goalie has won three of his past four starts and his record with this subpar team this season is 14-11-4. Thanks to his first-star performance in Friday's 4-3 victory over the Rangers in Calgary, the Flames tied a team record with 45 one-goal games this season. They have a 22-16-7 mark in contests decided by a single shot and, with eight games to go, will undoubtedly rewrite the previous franchise-high that was set in 2005-06.
