Ramo is hoping to backup Miikka Kiprusoff in Calgary whenever the NHL lockout ends. We believe this will be quite the challenge as he will have to beat out both Henrik Karlsson and Leland Irving.

Karri Ramo expects to speak with the Calgary Flames after the World Championships.

He isn't sure if he'll play in the NHL next season, as he still has one year left on his KHL deal, but he wants to return to North American hockey and envisions himself playing for the Flames. The 25-year-old keeper feels he has improved because of the work he has done overseas as the starting goalie for Avangard Omsk and he could end up as Calgary's backup as soon as next season. "I can't leave right away, but you know things always change," said Ramo. "In the KHL especially."

Karri Ramo is expected to spend the 2012-13 campaign in the KHL.

The Calgary Flames acquired Ramo's NHL rights in January, but Ramo still has a season left in his contract with Omsk Avangard. "Member clubs of the National Hockey League are not permitted to buy a contract out there," Flames GM Jay Feaster said. He added, "Barring something we would not foresee — and Omsk deciding they didn’t want to have Karri back — he will be back there and playing there next year."

Karri Ramo will continue to play for Avangard Omsk of the Kontinental Hockey League next season.

Ramo signed a two-year deal with Avangard Omsk during the 2009 off-season, but he had an opt out clause. However, he decided not to exercise it after going 21-17-4 with a 2.11 GAA and .913 save percentage in 44 KHL games. If Ramo had decided to return to the NHL, he would have been forced to play with Tampa Bay, who still own his rights.

Karri Ramo has signed with Avangard Omsk of the Russian KHL league, according to a report out of Europe.

So far the Lightning haven't said anything on the matter. There have been a few erroneous reports out of Russia with respect to various signings, so we'll wait to hear from the Lightning before believing it. If true, however, the Lightning would need to look for a backup goalie for Mike Smith for next season. Stay tuned.
