Joel Ward scored two times for the Capitals in their 3-1 win over the Flames on Saturday night.

New head coach Barry Trotz said that the Joel Ward-Jason Chimera line was the most reliable for Washington last season.

The new coach has spent the summer going over the Capitals games from last season and was impressed with Ward and Chimera. "I believe in a line that checks better, that’s reliable. I watched a lot of games from last year and the most reliable line was really [Joel] Ward and [Jason] Chimera. That was by far the most predictable line. That’s what players have. They all have talents they’re strong at," Trotz said. "A guy like Joel Ward, his strength is puck possession and smart and reading the play. His game is more of a grinding, smart, intelligent game. It might not be as quick as some other guys." Ward had 24 goals and 49 points last season but he may be in tough to match it this season.

Joel Ward figures the Washington Capitals will need to spend more time studying away from the ice next season since Barry Trotz has taken over as their coach.

"On ice, I expect us to be a lot more detailed, I think," Ward told CSN Washington on Saturday. "You'll get a sense of that right away; there might be some homework at times." Ward expects those assignments will pay off. The forward played his first full NHL season under Trotz with the Nashville Predators in 2008-09. The 35 points (17 goals) Ward scored that season were his career high until he put up 49 (24 goals) for the Capitals last season. Trotz was hired May 26 to replace Adam Oates after Washington failed to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2007.
