Joel Ward scored the game winner at 14:42 in the first period as the San Jose Sharks beat Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 Wednesday night.
Ward’s shot came as the Sharks skated shorthanded and it gave them a two-goal lead as the first period ended. Logan Couture scored the first goal of the night on a power play a little more than three minutes earlier. Don’t expect a lot of production in the next several games, however; this was only the second goal of the season and the first since October 15th. Ward has played in 17 games since. Nov 24 - 1:02 AM

It happened in the third period and Ward went to the concussion room as per protocol but was able to return before the end of the game. Ward has only one goal this season in nine games with a nasty minus-five rating. He should not be in your lineup at this time but is capable of getting hot.

Joel Ward scored another big goal Saturday as his third period marker tied the game at two.

The goal was Ward's seventh of the post-season and it sent the game into overtime where Joonas Donskoi popped the game-winner to give the Sharks their first ever win in Stanley Cup Final play. Ward has been terrific in the playoffs and his off-season signing by the Sharks has paid dividends throughout the regular season and into the playoffs. He is a late-round pick at best next season in deeper pools.

Joel Ward believes number 22 should be retired throughout the NHL in honor of Willie O'Ree.

O'Ree was the first black hockey player to play in the NHL. "I definitely think Willie should be recognized for sure," Ward said. "The league obviously does that with task force but I do think that Willie should definitely be a big part of the league for sure for what he did. It’s a no-brainer. Without Willie, it would be tough for me to be sitting here today. I definitely think Willie should be a big part of this." Ward wears number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson.

All's well that ends well. The goal gave San Jose a 2-0 lead they'd only build on. Ward now has seven points in 12 games this postseason.
