He hasn't been cleared for battle drills yet, but feels that will come soon. "Hopefully, it'll heal good enough that, at some point on this road trip, I'll be able to come back," said Nielsen. Coach Jeff Blashill isn't sure when Nielsen will be ready to return. He isn't eligible to come off injured reserve until Saturday, but he may not be ready to play until next week.

His line, between Thomas Vanek and Andreas Athanasiou, combined to score Detroit's first three goals of the match. "Nielsen and Vanek have been good together," coach Jeff Blashill said. "Vanek thinks the game at a whole different level beyond most players, and Nielsen can give and go with him. AA gave them some speed on that line." Nielsen has collected 20 points in 39 games for the Red Wings.

Frans Nielsen has not disappointed as Detroit's second-line center this season.

Detroit didn't fare as well with additions like Stephen Weiss and Brad Richards, but Nielsen has enjoyed a solid start. "He's been what we thought," coach Jeff Blashill said. "He's a competitor, he competes extremely hard. He plays in all different facets of the game. He's very good defensively, very good on the power play. He's been a real good player for us overall." He has been playing with Thomas Vanek and Gustav Nyquist recently, while generating eight goals and 18 points in 34 matches.

Frans Nielsen scored a goal in regulation and he added the shootout winner in Detroit's 4-3 win over the Panthers.

Nielsen tied the game at three with under seven minutes in regulation. The Red Wings forward finished the game with five shots on goal and two blocked shots while winning 56 percent of his face-offs. Nielsen has eight goals, 10 assists and a minus-13 rating in 34 games this season. Anthony Mantha and Drew Miller also scored for the Wings.
