Wings GM Ken Holland feels newly signed forward Frans Nielsen is a 200-foot player.
"He’s been in the New York Islanders as a top two-line center," Holland said. "He’s had a lot of responsibility, offensively and defensively, we feel he’s a 200-foot player. He fits the type of player we look for here in Detroit and quality person. We did a lot of checking and talked to a lot of people and everything we got on and off the ice was top notch." The 32-year-old had 20 goals and 52 points in 81 games last season. Jul 3 - 11:22 AM

The Detroit Red Wings have signed Frans Nielsen to a six-year, $31.5 million contract.

Well Wings' GM Ken Holland said he was going to spend the money he saved with the retirement of Pavel Datsyuk, and he did. Nielsen is no star, but he is a solid veteran forward, who at age 32 is still an effective offensive contributor. Over his 606-game career, Nielsen has scored 119 goals and registered 349 points. He should play in the Wings' top six.
Jul 2 - 9:38 AM

Frans Nielsen reportedly turned down a contract offer from the Islanders worth $5.5 million per season.

Sources had indicated that the two sides were closer to a new deal that would likely be six or seven years. Nielsen can become an unrestricted free agent on Friday, but he still could sign with the Islanders after listening to some offers from other teams.
Jun 27 - 5:09 PM

The New York Islanders would love to re-sign Frans Nielsen.

Nielsen is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. GM Garth Snow said that he talked to Nielsen's agent within the last week and while they have moved closer to a deal, nothing is imminent. Nielsen had 20 goals and 52 points and that could be hard to replace should he bolt to greener pastures. Nielsen should be a 20 goal, 50 point player once again next season so draft him accordingly.
Jun 25 - 8:42 AM

Frans Nielsen isn't sure if he'll be back with the Islanders next season, but he would like to be.

"It's going to be a little bit interesting. It's a weird feeling, for sure, not knowing if you're going to be back or not," he said. "I love being here and I would love to be back. We'll see what happens." His agent has been involved in some calls with GM Garth Snow, but there have been no contract negotiations. Nielsen can become an unrestricted free agent in July.
May 16 - 9:10 AM

Frans Nielsen could become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

With the Islanders eliminated from the playoffs, Nielsen has completed his four-year, $11 million contract. He's likely to get a raise after his solid 2015-16 campaign where he scored 20 goals and 52 points in 81 contests.
May 9 - 8:55 AM

Frans Nielsen will be a healthy scratch for Sunday's season finale against Philadelphia.

For the second time in three seasons, Nielsen hit the 20-goal and 50-point marks. Indeed through 78 games he scored 20 goals and 52 points, falling tantalizingly close to his career highs.
Apr 10 - 6:10 PM

Frans Nielsen recorded an assist in a 5-2 win over Tampa Bay on Monday.

It was Nielsen's 50th point in 78 contests this season. This is the second time that the 31-year-old forward has reached the 50-point milestone in a single campaign.
Apr 5 - 10:07 AM

Frans Nielsen played in his 600th career game on Tuesday.

Nielsen has played exclusively for the Islanders thus far and is just the 13th player to participate in at least 600 games with that team. This season he has 19 goals and 47 points in 75 contests.
Mar 30 - 11:11 AM

Frans Nielsen recorded an assist in a 2-1 shootout loss to Pittsburgh Tuesday night.

Nielsen now has eight points in his last seven games. That's brought him up to 19 goals and 46 points in 68 contests in 2015-16.
Mar 16 - 11:22 AM

Frans Nielsen recorded two assists in a 4-3 overtime loss to Winnipeg Thursday night.

That brings Nielsen up to 40 points in 62 games this season. Not including the lockout shortened 2013 campaign, Nielsen has reached the 40-point mark in five straight seasons.
Mar 4 - 11:17 AM

The New York Islanders are only 14-14-4 against Eastern Conference opponents this season.

What's even worse is that they are only 3-8-1 against teams that are in the playoffs. The good news is that the Islanders were 12-0-2 at home against the West. "We’ve got to be better against those teams, especially the ones in our division," Frans Nielsen said. "To be fair, though, I think the last time we played Washington (a 3-2 loss on Feb. 4), that was one of our best games of the season. It was still a loss though, so we have to find ways to get points against the better teams."
Feb 13 - 10:58 AM

Frans Nielsen picked up a pair of assists during Sunday's 8-1 win over Edmonton.

The veteran Islander center now has 18 assists and 33 points on the season. Not quite the production we've come accustomed to, unfortunate.
Feb 7 - 6:30 PM

Frans Nielsen is now the proud owner of a nice two-game goal scoring streak.

Nielsen popped in a pretty goal during Thursday's 2-1 win over the Sabers, and also contributed five shots with a block, a minor, and winning half his draws. Is there anything he can't do? Nielsen now has 14 goals and 25 points on the season.
Thu, Dec 31, 2015 09:31:00 PM

Frans Nielsen scored two goals in the 4-3 shootout win over the Flyers on Tuesday.

Nielsen now has 11 goals on the year, behind only Tavares for the team lead. He is on pace for 59 points this season, which would set a career high. The 31 year-old Danish forward seems to be finding his groove offensively.
