Frans Nielsen has excelled in the shootout over his career.
Nielsen has the most career shootout goals in the NHL with 47 over his 94 attempts. This season specifically he's three-for-four in the skills competition. Those numbers might not get a lot of attention most of the time, but it's a meaningful part of his upside to Detroit. "It’s an asset. It gives you points, and they’re big points," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "Here, and the course of his career, I’m sure he’s accumulated a lot of points for us and the (New York) Islanders. Last year our fortunes changed a lot in shootouts and a large part of it was because of Frans." Unfortunately, he hasn't been as desirable offensively outside of the shootout as he has nine goals and 14 points in 37 contests this season. Sun, Dec 31, 2017 05:04:00 AM

Frans Nielsen scored a goal shorthanded in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins.

Darren Helm made a beautiful play to steal the puck from Danton Heinen before feeding Nielsen who just squeaked one passed Tuukka Rask to tie the game with approximately five minutes remaining in the first frame. It's Nielsen's second shorthanded goal of the year, ninth overall and it brought his point total up to 14 in 35 games.

Frans Nielsen scored the only goal for Detroit in a 6-1 loss to St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.

Nielsen's eighth marker of the season came in the third period after the Blues had a 4-0 lead. He has generated 12 points in 29 games this year. Luke Glendening and Jonathan Ericsson had the assists on the Red Wings' lone goal.

Frans Nielsen netted his 46th career shootout goal on Saturday.

That moves Nielsen ahead of Radim Vrbata for the all-time lead. He has made good on 93 attempts compared to Vrbata's 105 and his 20 game-deciding goals has him tied with T.J. Oshie for the most overall. Nielsen has had a quietly productive start to the 2017-18 season away from the shootout, with six goals and eight points in 18 matches.

Frans Nielsen notched a goal and an assist in Thursday's 6-3 loss to Calgary.

Nielsen has two goals and two helpers over a three-game point streak. His recent surge has given him six markers and eight points after 17 contests this year.

Frans Nielsen skated in his 700th career game Sunday when Detroit visited Edmonton.

Nielsen's fifth goal of the season held up as the game winner in a 4-0 victory versus the Oilers. However, he hasn't done enough to warrant much fantasy attention so far. Nielsen also has no assists and 28 shots through 15 games this year.

Frans Nielsen will play in Thursday's game against Ottawa.

Nielsen didn't participate in the morning skate because of an injury, but the team has decided that he's healthy enough to suit up. He has four goals in 13 games this season.

Frans Nielsen didn't participate in Thursday's practice.

Frans Nielsen scored a couple of goals in a 3-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.

Frans Nielsen scored the only goal in the shootout on Saturday night in a 2-1 win over Ottawa.

Nielsen has 20 game-deciding shootout goals, which is the most all-time in the NHL. It doesn't get him a point to add to his official totals, but Nielsen has the potential to win games for his team when the game goes beyond overtime. Nielsen has not recorded a regulation or extra time point in Detroit's first two games this year.

Frans Nielsen scored two goals and an assist in Saturday’s 5-1 win over the Boston Bruins.

Nielsen has been a reliable 40 to 60 point scorer in the last four seasons. He had 17 goals and 41 points in 79 games in his first season with the Red Wings. Nielsen should be able to reach the 40-point mark again this season, but expecting him to produce more than that isn’t realistic.

Frans Nielsen registered 41 points in 79 games during his first season with Detroit.

Nielsen signed a six-year contract worth $31.5 million with Detroit last summer. He finished fourth on the team in scoring after recording a pair of assists in Sunday's 4-1 win over New Jersey.

Frans Nielsen picked up a goal and an assist in a 5-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.

After inking a lucrative deal with the Red Wings last summer, Nielsen hasn't exactly lived up to his contract with just 36 points in 74 games this season. In his defence, he has been better of late with five points over his last six games. He's going to need to have a much better second season in Detroit if he hopes to get the Red Wings back to the playoffs. His assist came on a goal scored by Mike Green during the third period.
