Andy Greene had his had his high school No. 8 retired Wednesday.

Greene attended Trenton High School in Michigan, helping to lead his team to the state championship in 1998. "That's the only positive about the lockout," Greene told those in attendance. "Being able to come here tonight and do this and [for everyone to] show the appreciation that they do."

Greene has been banged up quite a bit already this season, missing 25 games so far thanks in large part to a fractured foot. He hasn't scored a point in his last 10 contests but still has a respectable 12 points in 39 games.

Andy Greene has registered a plus-6 rating and three assists in seven games since returning to New Jersey's lineup from a fractured foot.

He missed 22 games with the ailment, but hasn't displayed any rust while helping the Devils post a 5-1-1 record since he came back. "He's been critical to our success here since the All-Star break," coach Pete DeBoer said Monday after practice. "With (Henrik) Tallinder and (Adam) Larsson down, two of our best puck-moving defensemen, (Greene) needed to come in and fill the hole for us. He didn't have the luxury of being able to take two or three weeks to work himself back into game speed. We threw him right in there, and he's responded and been very good."

Green has struggled most of the last couple of months with foot problems. He last played Dec. 6 and has been in only 23 games this season, recording 9 assists.

Andy Greene (foot) hasn't resumed team practices yet and won't dress on Tuesday night against Buffalo.

"He won't until after the break," GM Lou Lamoriello said. "There's no chance of him playing (against the Sabres), so we don't want to take a chance." Greene has been out of action since Dec. 6 with a fractured toe.

Although Andy Greene (fractured toe) wasn't given the green light to start skating, he can begin off-ice workouts.

"My left leg is about half the size of my right one just from being in the cast for so long," Greene said. He's started riding on a stationary bike to regain some of his strength. He won't see the doctor again about the possibility of skating until Thursday.
