Dan Girardi doesn't care that he isn't well-liked in the hockey analytics community.
"I guess I'm like the worst guy for all these analytics," Girardi said. "I don't much care. I'm a team-first guy. I'm going to keep it really simple. I'm going to try to do all the little things right, make that first pass a good one, get in the lane and block that shot, finish my check, try to get the boys going." He hasn't provided much from a fantasy perspective either so far, with no points in 10 games, but he has posted 17 hits and 20 blocks. Coach Jon Cooper appreciates Girardi's team-first attitude and his willingness to jump in front of shots, especially on the penalty kill. Oct 26 - 10:18 AM

After signing with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Dan Girardi bought GM Steve Yzerman's house.

It's an amusing, but purely coincidental set of circumstances. Girardi was naturally looking for a place to buy in Tampa and showed one he was interested in to Ryan Callahan, who's another former New York Rangers player that's now part of the Lightning. "Um, I'm pretty sure that's the GM's house," Callahan replied. Girardi and Yzerman, who had already moved into a new place, didn't have much in the way of interaction over the sale as it was handled through their agents. Still, it can't hurt to have bought the boss' house. It's also a nice aside as Yzerman was a big part of the reason why Girardi chose Tampa Bay as the GM personally called him to make the pitch.

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman believes his team got better defensively over the summer.

The Bolts finished 16th in goals against last season. "We needed to be a better defensive hockey team," Yzerman said. "I believe by bringing in Chris Kunitz and Dan Girardi we're a harder team to play against, and I'd expect us to be an improved team defensively." Both players add experience to the Lightning's roster, but both have also shown that their play has dropped off in the last few seasons. Neither player will be relevant in standard fantasy leagues.
Aug 26 - 4:10 PM

Dan Girardi has signed with Tampa for two years and $6 million.

The Bolts were looking for a stabilizing presence on their blueline and now they have one. Girardi will likely receive top-four minutes and be paired with either Victor Hedman or Anton Stralman. That said, he won’t get much power-play ice time and with only 15 points in 63 games with the Rangers last season he doesn’t profile as much of a fantasy asset.

The Tampa Bay Lightning are reportedly closing in on a contract with Dan Girardi.

Girardi is set to become an unrestricted free agent after being bought out by the Tampa Bay Lightning. He wouldn't be able to formerly sign with the Lightning until Saturday at noon ET. His contract with Tampa Bay would likely be an inexpensive short-term contract, so the risk would be minimal.
Jun 30 - 9:21 AM

Dan Girardi reportedly has a few potential landing spots as a free agent.

Craig Custance of the Athletic Detroit reported Tuesday that the Red Wings and several other teams have contacted the former Rangers defenseman. Tampa Bay and Minnesota are also reportedly interested in Girardi. He was bought out by New York a couple of weeks ago.
Jun 28 - 8:43 AM

The New York Rangers' decision to buyout Dan Girardi's contract will save them close to $2.9 million in cap space in 2017-18.

The savings will go down to roughly $1.9 million annually for the two seasons that follow and then they'll be paying $1.11 million more than they otherwise would have from 2020-21 through 2022-23. The decision to buy Girardi out is ending his 11-season tenure with the squad. "I poured my heart and soul into this team for the past 11 seasons and I enjoyed every minute of it," Girardi said. "I want to acknowledge that the Rangers are a first class organization who have always treated our players in a first class fashion. My family and I are most grateful for the way we have been treated during our stay in New York." Girardi should be able to land another contract elsewhere this summer.
Jun 15 - 10:19 AM

Dan Girardi plans to continue his playing career after he is bought out by the Rangers.

The Rangers will use a buyout on Girardi and he plans to test free agency afterward. The veteran defenseman played 11 seasons with New York and he released a statement Wednesday thanking the organization for the time he spent there.
Jun 14 - 3:03 PM

Dan Girardi will be bought out by the New York Rangers.

According to CapFriendly, Girardi's buyout cap hit will be $2,611,111 in 2017-18, $3,611,111 in 2018-19 and 2019-20, as well as $1,111,111 through the 2022-23 campaign. This explains why the Rangers didn't ask him to waive his no-movement clause. He played with three cracked ribs in playoffs, but the team wants to get younger and quicker on the back end.
Jun 14 - 1:20 PM

According to sources, Dan Girardi was not asked to waive his no-move clause prior to the expansion draft.

That means the Rangers will have to protect him. Girardi has three more seasons left on his six-year, $33 million contract. There has been some talk that he could be a buyout candidate this off-season. The 33-year-old blueliner was limited to 63 appearances in 2016-17.
Jun 13 - 8:50 AM

Dan Girardi isn't dwelling on the possibility of a buyout as he puts his energy into trying to push the Rangers to a championship.

Girardi has seen his role with the Rangers diminish over the past couple seasons, but he was strong in the first round series against Montreal. "I’m not worried about what might happen later or what happened before. I’m only thinking about right now," Girardi said. "I’m just playing every game as hard as I can. I’m not doing any speculating about the future. I’m playing to help the team win. I’m not playing for next year. I’m playing to win the Cup." The Rangers next test will be facing the Ottawa Senators in the second round. That series starts on Thursday.

Dan Girardi won't play in Sunday's game against the Anaheim Ducks.

Girardi (ankle) returned to the lineup last night, but he won't be suiting up tonight. It's unclear if Girardi re-injured himself on Saturday or if the Rangers just don't want him to play two games in two nights.
Mar 26 - 7:25 PM

Dan Girardi (ankle) will rejoin the Rangers on Saturday.

Girardi was sidelined for about a month. Now that he's healthy again, he's projected to play alongside Ryan McDonagh.
Mar 24 - 6:44 PM

Dan Girardi (ankle) will not play on Tuesday according to coach Alain Vigneault.

Girardi returned to action in the middle of February but was lost to the team again at the end of the month and the 10-14 day projection for a return has come and gone. He has 12 points in 56 games with a plus-eight rating and while he should be back by the end of the week, he did not skate on Saturday.
