Patrick Kaleta will work as Buffalo's youth hockey ambassador.
"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to work in the community in which I was born and raised, and to help grow the game of hockey among the youth of Western New York," Kaleta said Thursday. "As a kid, it was always a dream of mine to become a Buffalo Sabre, and now I'll have the opportunity to help other young kids develop the same passion for hockey." This essentially means that Kaleta has decided to call it quits on his playing career. He will now implement and manage the Sabres' "Learn to Play Program." Thu, Nov 17, 2016 06:39:00 PM

Patrick Kaleta is hoping to return to the NHL.

He has been skating with some former Sabres teammates as an unrestricted free agent. "Hopefully, I get a chance to play in the NHL," said Kaleta. "I definitely don't think I'm washed up yet." He skated in 26 games with Buffalo's minor-league affiliate, the Rochester Americans, last season.

Patrick Kaleta suited up in his first preseason game Thursday night after being sidelined with a groin injury.

He was hurt during scrimmages on the first weekend of camp. However, Kaleta's return didn't last long as he exited the match due to a lower-body injury and did not return. He is attending training camp on a tryout, but he already has an AHL deal with the club's minor-league affiliate. He will probably play in Rochester this year.

Patrick Kaleta, who is a free agent, has been skating in informal sessions with Buffalo players.

Buffalo GM Tim Murray said there is some interest in bringing Kaleta back, but the roster is currently full. He may have to take a AHL deal to stay with the organization. Kaleta suited up in 42 games with the Sabres last season and he has spent his entire 348-game career playing for his hometown team.

Although Patrick Kaleta is mere hours away from officially becoming an unrestricted free agent, he still wants to re-sign with Buffalo.

"My No. 1 goal and priority is to stay with the Sabres, especially after the moves we made," Kaleta said. "It'd be amazing to continue my career here." The moves in question might have sealed Kaleta's fate though. The Sabres have a bit of a logjam in terms of forwards as it is, so it seems unlikely that they would sign Kaleta at this point. He had three assists in 42 contests in 2014-15.

Patrick Kaleta isn't sure what his future holds, but he would obviously prefer to see his career continue in Buffalo.

"This organization, my teammates and the Buffalo Sabres crest means so much to me that it's hard for me to explain," Kaleta said. "I would do anything to be back here next year and for years to come." He has played his entire career (348 games) with his hometown team. Injuries have been an issue throughout that time because of his reckless style. Kaleta appeared in 42 games this past season and he picked up three assists to go with 88 hits.
